Lexie Kathleen wrote: "If I read "crap" one more time, I'm gonna scream. I have NO idea why Christian found her irresistible....literary fail."

If you took out every repetitive phrase or word this writer used, what would be left??? Add to the "Crap" list.....
My inner Goddess
Biting her Lip
Rolling her Eyes
Geez
A glint, secret, or mocking look in his eyes

And the horror of all horrors was her concluding that "she couldn't be what Christian needed her to be" rather than "WTF....NO Man Beats me with a Belt because he NEEDS to" at the end. She was an embarrassment to women everywhere.

BookishBitchyWitchy She was very obnoxious and I think the author used the inner dialogue as fillers so she could stretch it to a trilogy... definitely not the best I've read.

Ahri I really disliked her character. I almost stopped reading the first book a few times, but decided to finish it in case she changed, grew up and grew a spine. It never happened. I dropped the second book and never looked back.

Love that part. Found it weird how Christian couldn't see that.

It's not so weird. When boys are seduced by an older woman, they typically don't see themselves as "abused". Gettong it on with a hot older woman is probably every adolescent boy's fantasy.

That's a very good point :D Putting it like that makes it more understandable :D

message 58: by Hannah (new)

Hannah I completely agree with you, poster! The most infuriating thing for me was that she wouldn't just sign the bloody contract- didn't she read that thing?! It sounds incredible...yet here I am stuck in a dead end relationship where my boyfriend fails at dominating me. I feel Christians pain- though I don't know how he put up with Ana because I found her freakin' annoying!!
The inner goddess rambling just made her sound a little psychologically unable to focus on things, and pretty simple-minded; and god, does she have to say 'holy >insert swearword<' for everything?! She says 'holy sh**' one minute when Christian is doing something unbearably hot, then says 'holy crap' when she needs to take her mini pill. I was fully annoyed by the amount of times she said it.
Also found the sex scenes ridiculous- how does anyone orgasm with nipple stim alone? Doesn't she ever get sore?! And how does Christian keep going so many times- some abnormal staying power there!!

Overall, found this book very irritating, and very repetitive, but also heartbreakingly sad that I will never truly have this kind of relationship. Damn, why aren't the Christian Grey's of this world easier to find....

message 59: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna Carney Inner dialog was sooo annoying and i wanted to shoot the inner goddess

a LOT of the scenes were stolen from romantic movies or books, pretty much the whole twilight series, especially the other women being attracted to Christian like the many scenes where waitresses blush and only have eyes for him
and her saying "you know it's really not fair" i glance down at the formica tabletop tracing a pattern on it with my index finger, trying to sound nonchalant
"whats not fair?"
How you disarm people. women.me"
same scene in twilight when they have dinner together and they have almost the exact same conversation

Same characters as well he's the older experienced gorgeous man who falls for the innocent so called plain brunette who constantly asks "why me"

In general this series of books started out as fan fiction of twilight no wonder the books have turned out as twilight with porn included

ps: the "oh my's" "woah's and the constant stream of "baby" just tipped it over edge for me and I was constantly throwing the book down after a few pages and out loud saying "what bollocks"

message 60: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Still trying to get through book one of Fifty Shades. Towards the end now and it's dragging for me. I didn't expect any sort of literary genius, but I'm tired of reading the words "inner goddess" and "my subconscience." Does Ms. Steele have multiple personality disorder? She would be a perfect fit for Christian who evidently suffers from Bipolar Disorder. UGGHH.

Nancy I loved Ana's inner goddess! She often made me chuckle. Christian was Ana's first relationship and it was far from what most would consider a "normal" relationship. I was surprised that the second book started only five days after the first book ended. Christian had his reasons for the way he acted. If you've only read the first book, you really need to read all three. I would rank this series as among the best I've ever read.

Sparrowlicious I wonder why I keep clicking on these topics. Must be because I'm bored.

Ana's character is that of a teenage girl. No offense.
I think what's really flawed about this inner dialogue of hers is how it's written. If you have to give her a subconscious that tells her about how she's wrong you should write it as "I knew myself that I was wrong but I wanted to do this" not as "My sub concsious screamed at me but I did it anyway". The inner goddess seems to be some kind of schizo thing. Otherwise you can do it the same way as "I thought this and that but said this and that". Making characters out of every layer of her personality is the wrong approach in my opinion since it weirds people out and: if your character doesn't have a multiple personality disorder it's just stupid to display her different characteristics as different characters.

Apart from that - like I said, she's a teen. Easily falls in love and thinks she can change the guy she's fallen for. This obviously never gets resolved since the author thought that marrying your first love is the best thing for a plot. Cliche'd plot, there you go.

message 63: by Ferra (new) - rated it 1 star

Ferra Amiera I don't understand how can she fall for such a person...He's a physcho and controls her every move..Why?Bcuz he's ridiculously hot??She's too naive and very indecisive...And I wish I can just shut her inner goddess up!

LaSonya She definitely got on my nerve but I was able to push along through the book.

Jessica I found her annoying through all the books, but especially in the last one because she changes him!!! I liked Christian the way he was. His controlling issues were not that bad because they were things to actually benefit her and keep her safe...and to make sure she was eating. Which is another thing..WHY DOES SHE NEVER EAT!! I mean come on grow up and eat and not be mad when he gets mad that you didn't eat.

I also didn't like how she would say she understood him, but then not do what he says and not tell him. Then get mad that he gets mad..then feel bad and say Oh fifty...please you asked for it. She doesn't even try to change for him but expects him to do all the changing.

I think parts of Christian are better now, but I liked who he was and Ana ruined that for me.

Rachel Seaborn Yes! I found her so annoying! I would often times catch myself skiming through parts of her "inner thought" because I couldn't stand listening to her...

message 67: by Laurie (new) - added it

Laurie Kaszubski Crawford OMG...I am so glad there are others that feel like I do about how annoying MANY parts of these books were. How many times does she have to write "I love you I won't leave you,,,don't leave me....I won't leave you but I'm afraid you'll leave me, so don't leave me I love you...I won't leave you please don't leave me"...good lord enough already. The story itself of Christian was good but the writing was pretty bad and the sex was always the same. Eating breakfast oh i want her...he's in those pants again oh I want him..ugh!! It got really old really fast

message 68: by A (new)

A I must admit Ana's character is slightly annoying. As you said she is an adult that seems she is going through the teenage phase of figuring out boys but that's not what bothers me. I don't know if I want to blame Ana, I blame the author. The characters in the book are flawless, each having their very own individual personality that is expressed very well. My issue is with the words the author uses. I get that she is British and it seems she may have been too friendly with using words from the thesaurus because she said so many words that could have been put more simple and it would have the same effect. The goddess thing kills me now, I finished the first book and I'm on the second now and I'm not sure I'll be able to if I hear about the damn goddess one more time. Using the term once, twice, three times is pushing it but its on every other page and I want to punch the character in the face for it though it should be the author. Ana could be so much more attractive as a character if she explained her inner thoughts better and not used the sames words over and over. It wasn't just goddess, but her explaining Christian's smell the same way again over and over, "body wash and Christian". Last complaint is the sex, not going to lie sure it's cool if they want to get it on 30 times in the book, its entertaining on Christian's part but pretty pathetic on hers since she only ever says "Please", "Ahh" and moans while Christian says a handful of wonderful phrases that excites readers. It's very clear this was a fan fiction, though I will give the author credit for the creation of such wonderful characters, though the writing is slightly annoying and could have used a few changes and it would have been perfect

message 69: by Thea (new) - rated it 3 stars

Thea Anna is immature and stupid. A girl with brains, such as depicted in the book, 22-years-old and a virgin... would not jump into a the first guy who wants to have sex with her, let alone wanted her as sub. That girl should have been running through the hills waving red flags.

Isriana Mocha Spresso wrote: "Stephanie wrote: "She drove me nuts with how annoying she was in her dumb inner dialog. I wanted to scream at her several times while reading this. Her mental thoughts going back and forth about ..."
I really felt weird when she does stupid things even in book 2 and 3 knowing full well the implications of her actions

Nichole I thought Ana's character was overall awesome. The only reason to seriously hate on "her", is to take a step back and hate the writing; not the character.

Hilary West Would a klutzy naive virgin go head over heels for a sex pervert? I doubt it, no wonder this book is a work of fiction. Plausability? It hasn't got any as far as I am concerned. I was really sick of her quite early on, and as for him he seemed a right creep, so good looking it was unbelievable - it just made it more creepy.

Diana Yes! She was annoying! Her inner goddess, her "Oh My" phrase she used all the time. Gee! Also, her insisting of Christian's past relationships. Hello! You didn't even know the guy back then, get over it!

Crystal NO! She was cool. A bit naive, but what do you expect from a virgin!!

message 75: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Mcfadden STEPHANIE IF U R READING THIS I COULD NOT AGREE WITH U MORE!!!! I totally think she was a drama queen and I would have totally signed!! Its nice to see there r others that see it for what it is-like I said by the 4th book she will have stripped all his masculinity away and he will be a spineless worm with no backbone!!

message 76: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Mcfadden Brittany I completely disagree -it was not about abusing her -its part of a arousal factor -I dont think he was rough on her what so ever -this is a grown up book for grown up people -I personally dont think she was good enough for him because she was a total cry baby and a imature drama queen!!

Rachel Seaborn Jenny wrote: "Brittany I completely disagree -it was not about abusing her -its part of a arousal factor -I dont think he was rough on her what so ever -this is a grown up book for grown up people -I personally ..." So true Brittany! I kept thinking to myself while reading: "And why is he still with her??"

Rachel Seaborn Rachel wrote: "Jenny wrote: "Brittany I completely disagree -it was not about abusing her -its part of a arousal factor -I dont think he was rough on her what so ever -this is a grown up book for grown up people ..." Sorry I mean : So true Jenny! :)

message 79: by Lucy (last edited Sep 25, 2012 12:53PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Lucy Pireel I was with stupid, when I bought the complete series in one buy. Hadn't I done that, I would have never bought 2 & 3. The times I wanted to scream at her to stop whining and please stop crying and talking to that irritating inner goddess were countless in book one, two and three, not much better.
And I couldn't see what all the fuss was about, there's hardly any BDSM in the book, some soft play and that's it, he does away with his more serious things and spanks her. Pfff, hardly worth mentioning, but the hype was created and it worked. We all fell for it and bought a book(books) that's at best a read that would normally not get to come back home after holiday, were it not on my e-reader.
It is cleverly done by the writer, to play into the common idea that there must be something wrong with those who like to play that way.

Natalie I started reading this because I was curious about the book that has so many people talking. I didn't realise it was part of a trilogy. Ana drives me nuts sometimes! Her "inner goddess" and the constant "oh my" makes me want to scream, I've yelled at 'Darker' a few times, prompting my husband to ask me why I'm still reading it. My answer? I started the trilogy, now I have to finish it! I haven't been this irritated by a character since I read the Twilight books. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

Vicki I don't know why she refused to sign the contract or have hard limits. After she refused them she did them all anyway. I wanted to slap her.

Adrianne De Veyra ME!!! I think she was just an annoying little *bleep*

Rachel Seaborn Natalie wrote: "I started reading this because I was curious about the book that has so many people talking. I didn't realise it was part of a trilogy. Ana drives me nuts sometimes! Her "inner goddess" and the con..."
I commend you on finishing the series.... I don't think I'm going to... I'm still on the second book... started earlier this year. I got so fed up with the writing and what-not that I haven't picked it back up. :)

message 84: by Stacy (new) - rated it 1 star

Stacy S. I'm an author and I really don't like bashing on other authors, but I could only read 10 pages of this. That should speak for itself.

Minoli ok. those who take Ana's age for an excuse, I am 21 and i do not have inner dialogues with my "inner godess". if such a being ever appears, i would either be knocking on Dr. Flynn's door or admitting my self o whatever the place that Leila is in.
Ana would have been bearable if she didn't keep on and on about how her inner goddess was doing back flips at the sight of Grey's pants (excuse me while i barf) and about her inner conscience that looks over "Complete Works of Charles Dickens". i feel for Dickens. seriously.

message 86: by Vail (new) - rated it 1 star

Vail Ugh, there is just so much about this book that rubs me wrong. This book in no way reflects on a healthy BDSM relationship. Anna is portayed as a weak, indecisive, wish-washy girl. Inexperienced or not, it is insulting to both women in general and twice as insulting to submissives to see her portrayed like this.

It makes me sad to see that this book has reached such a wide audience as it will likely be the only 'reference' these vanilla people have if they encounter a real life submissive who they will instantly compare to this book. Submissives tend to posess some of the greatest inner strenght you will ever encounter, they are often educated and proud and it is insulting to think of this book as a represenation of us.

Imogene She's so annoying! It's so easy for Christian to destruct her. She can't stand on her grounds and also she will ask/do something to Christian to prove her point but in the end, she will just give up and give Christian another great sex.

message 88: by Merreh (new)

Merreh The inner goddess thing I didn't mind, the subconscious thing I didn't mind but is her incessant 'Oh!' And 'Holy...' seriously made me want to shoot myself, she must be a very holy person to say it every damn minute second of every freaking hour, its at least in every page on every paragraph, I had to put the book down after awhile, her rambling just pissed me off to much, what the hell was the author thinking? "Ana I love you" 'oh', and he held me tight to his chest...'OH!' My brain just...I cant...words fail me.

message 89: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I really liked the books, but did find that Ana was a bit weak as a character. If you are wanting to read something in the same genre of BDSM with strong, well developed female characters, I recommend:

Sensation and Magic - A woman's erotic journey through Submission and Mastery by Germaine Gibson SENSATION AND MAGIC - Submission and Mastery

maria ♡ Anna was really annoying with all the crying and her thinking that she wasnt good enough or pretty enough annoying. Christine is with her is that not proof enough that she is pretty and all those insecurities she had of herself should be gone that was annoying

message 91: by Heather (new)

Heather YES!!!!!!!! IN SHOUTY CAPITALS!!! Ana is a very wussy, naive, stupid, annoying "heroine". I never continued the series.

Analilia Gregg Ana will be the reason I don't even finish the first book. She's a very weak character, I know nothing about her, and quite honestly don't care. I know she's some kind of english literature graduate, though one wouldn't believe it by the way she speaks. I'm sure there had to have been some kind of description of what she looks like but all I know is that she's a brunette. She's annoyingly insecure, whiny, indecisive. After Grey shows her the contract the first time, which describes that he will be requiring her to dress a certain way, eat certain foods, exercise a certain amount, etc and the FIRST thing she says is that she can't accept money for clothes because it would make her feel like a ho?!? She's a virgin who has never even touched herself? She just doesn't appeal to me, I don't identify with her at all, she's an unrealistic woman and a weak heroine. I can't imagine any reader would learn anything from her or care what happens to her in the future.

message 93: by Lulu (new)

Lulu Von masen seriously i don't even know where to start. i'm in the middle of the second book just because i HAVE to finish reading this bull (it'll bug me hard if i don't), but it's making it really hard for me. ana is the most annoying and fake character i have ever met in a book. it's not only about all the virgin thing, it might actually be normal for some 21/22 year olds nowadays to be virgin, silly, naive, whatever... but then she cannot even use a laptop? a cellphone? she's overwhelmed by an ipad? she doesn't know how to use makeup? all she knows is books? what are you, retarded? we're living in 2012, girl! she acts like the evolution went completely past her, and she's so boring, whiny, not even close to funny, and yet again... what's with that damn inner goddess? i get the subconcious thing, but the goddess seems like a complete schizo to me. i keep imagining a huge M&M running around or dancing in her head, having basically nothing to do with her. it's just pointless. i really cannot imagine how such a girl could be "beautiful", rather something like amy farrah fowler, without the glasses. and then there's christian... i've read a comment on here about it, i've seen beautiful men too, but i've never experienced girls blushing and drooling and staring at one because of only looks and/or money. it's like he came right out of harry potter with a highly strong love potion on him. i'd say his character's okay, even though he's fucked up, but he can do some minor changes in order to keep the story going. maybe the bdsm stuff could turn someone on, even me, but i still find it rather humiliating even reading some of the stuff he likes doing. i would've said goodbye to him the moment he showed the contract and the playroom, as i've read from some other on here, too. then the whole story... it's always the same, the OH's and AH's and them doing the 2-minutes "kinky f***ery" everywhere and at almost any time, like their lives depend on it. and what's with her being so aroused and moaning and coming like crazy when he basically just touches her? i've never heard of such woman. ugh... there's just so much to complain about, it's really challenging just turning one page and managing to go on reading... the only thing that keeps me going right now are stuff like leila, elena, even taylor or mia, and so on... but every time it gets somewhat interesting, stupid ana has to leave the room! i cannot even go on expressing my annoyance by this whole thing, so more to come eventually... but it's *cough* EXQUISITE *cough* knowing that i'm not the only one around here with these thoughts. ;)

message 94: by Norma (last edited Oct 08, 2012 05:32PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Norma As far Ana being stupid or annoying to most of the post I have read, to each his or her own. Ana was not looking for a Realarionship when she meet Christian. Yes ana could be a pain, also Christian was a bigger pain at times in the story if he didn't get his way. Ana was very young and had never been with a man sexualy, and I think that's what Christian was looking for all along. PS. Never say you wouldn't let a man with all Christian had to give (Sex, Money Ect.) become your Lover, and Husband.!!

message 95: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna one thing about ana that has continued to piss me off is when christian says he doesnt like something and she does it anyways then he gets mad and then she's all like HOLY CRAP im thinkin WTF bitch u knew he didnt like it why do it in the first place....ughh im just dragging myself along to finish book 3 damn my ocd about finishing book series

message 96: by Nermin (last edited Oct 09, 2012 05:07AM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Nermin I think the whole book and every characterin it is annoying and beyond stupid. it's just not fair to single out Anna so. What about that "handsome, rich and apparently perfect in every way" Christan? Just how stupid and miserable do you have to be to fall for someone like Anna?

Minoli i kind of like Christian. he is alright, considering his disturbing childhood, except for falling for Ana of course..

Destiney I get that she is 21. But does she really have to act with such stupidity? Lets say I was Ana....If i was crying all the time and having all these crazy feelings over this Insane Christian Gray I would have just dumped this fool in a heartbeat. I love Christians character though. I thought he was dreamy and sexy.. ;)

Lachelle Redd I did not like her insecurity with the constant, "why does he want me, he's so handsome." That drove me nuts. The inner dialogue I didn't mind. She was painted as an innocent female with little to no interactions with me so she is going to be immature which matched his immaturity. He had all the business sense in the world but the minute things didn't go his way, he threw tantrums. They were meant to be annoying young people finding their way in love and lust.

Dr. Vipin Behari Goyal I have read first 2 parts of trilogy and find Anna PATHETIC but to portray her like that was the object of author.
