Fifty Shades of Grey

How old should someone be to read this book?

As an adult, being married I understand sex more than what a young teen would. I like the book, dont get me wrong, but what if Christian was dirt poor and not that good looking, I believe it would freak the hell out of people. Everyone would see it as a very sick book. LMAO!! You know it's true...ALL OF YOU!

That is so true! He would be just some freakazoid sex addict! Haha

i think you should be 18 but just my personal opinion.

I agree Book 2 is better!

i totally agree...even at my age over 50 i was shocked a bit!!!!

Wow...14! definitely not for me when I was that age!

i read it , but it seems to be hyped up so much , thats probably the only reason...definitely not a series I would reread again, like some series I have!!!!

totally agree!!!

So much more you could read that ..."
I totally agree, and it isnt a series i would even reread again! Unlike some series which i can read over and over!

I liked Twilight better and I am 55!!! i would never reread the Grey series over again.

Romance...just a bit...more sex than anything..i read it at first when it came out, never would reread the series again, unlike some series I have read over and over!

You are so true!!! I would never read it again, unlike some series I have reread over and over! Just not THAT good!

totally agree..its all hype! I would never reread the series!

Under 49? Really? Why is that?
I think honestly that this book is kind of a "beginner erotica," and as much as I didn't like the book (AT ALL) I think it's kind of neat how it's opened up people's reading horizons, so to speak. So rather than assigning an age (because what do I even know about being a teenager these days, I'm almost 30 which is 50 Shades years is like a million) I'd say it's got more to do with what you want to read - if you feel like you are ready to read somewhat graphic(ish) sex and are compelled by the reviews of this book, give it a go. But at least take a close look at the negative reviews and WHY people who don't like it feel the way they do. There is a lot in there that is problematic, and most of it has nothing to do with sex.
I'm fairly certain I would have read it as a younger teen if it had existed, though i'm pretty sure I would have hidden it from my parents. Teenagers have been finding and reading/watching porn on the internet since it's existed, I'd say this kind of goes in the same category.
The way it's written it seems like it's for a less mature audience anyway (the author was obviously scared to use actual body part vocabulary, instead option for "down there" and other euphemisms - kind of immature and not sexy imo, but this isn't a review of the book so.)
Though I'd definitely recommend other books over this one, any day. (Need to throw that in there)

I just can't imagine those images in my mother's head.... I'd like to think that she doesn't know about this stuff :-)!!!

^ haha this is exactly where my "beginner erotica" comment comes from. The age range for kink doesn't expire - if someone was into it in their 30s 20 years later they probably still are.
Though based on the follow up for these books I guess it's all new to a lot of people.

Today with the media always having everything be so sexualized and shoving sex in our faces, in a negative way I don't think its a good idea for anyone younger than 18 to read it. I am even a little disgraced with teen nick and the shows they have for teens.
I would even suggest that some should not read it until they are at least a junior or senior in college depending on their maturity level.
The choice is ultimately yours, go with your gut! I am sure you won't forget the title of the book so you have plenty of time to read it.

This is not a good book period. It is poorly written, full of cliches and depending where you are in relationships/maturity it may give you some ideas about what is or is not healthy in a relationship. Yes, it is "just sex", but even though I have enjoyed some steamy books in my time, this one was just silly.

now this is scary - are you now corrupted? - is it like being a sexual zombie?

I think I agree with you it mostly depends on also what kind of a reader you are
If a person generally attaches themselves with characters in the books then as a teen I think one should not
For me the book is just something which is thrilling and I am in no way attached to the outcomes of the book and thus it doesn't have any effect on me
hope this helped

Interesting - you stated the book was thrilling for you yet you rated it a 1? - that sounds more like the book was boring and you were not interested in it??

Go Ask Alice was such a good book, I read it when I was about 15 as well.

There have been books like these for much longer than the past 40 years. The ancient Greeks and Romans had TONS of erotic writings (Sappho and Ovid for example). There is Fanny Hill by Cleland and The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade. Here is an example of one 17th century work: "A unique work of this time is Sodom, or the Quintessence of Debauchery (1684), a closet play by the notorious Restoration rake, John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester in which Bolloxinion, King of Sodom, authorises "that buggery may be used O'er all the land, so cunt be not abused", which order, though appealing to soldiery, has deleterious effects generally, leading the court physician to counsel: "Fuck women, and let Bugg'ry be no more"
