There have been books like these for much longer than the past 40 years. The ancient Greeks and Romans had TONS of erotic writings (Sappho and Ovid for example). There is Fanny Hill by Cleland and The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade. Here is an example of one 17th century work: "A unique work of this time is Sodom, or the Quintessence of Debauchery (1684), a closet play by the notorious Restoration rake, John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester in which Bolloxinion, King of Sodom, authorises "that buggery may be used O'er all the land, so cunt be not abused", which order, though appealing to soldiery, has deleterious effects generally, leading the court physician to counsel: "Fuck women, and let Bugg'ry be no more"

Jo I agree with Claire, in that it depends on how mature you are at 16. Some parts of it can be a bit explicit and if you are not used to this, then it's a good idea that you wait a few years before you begin reading it.

Jennifer Everyone knew when they picked up this book is wasn't for the queemish. It states on the book it is for 18+ and older. And with everyone talking about it most knew it was going to be "dirty". But i due believe that the 18+ should apply to this book.

Sera i'm 15 and i've read it :) as long as you're mentally mature i think it's alright. but i don't savor the idea of like 12-year-olds reading it :D

message 156: by Taylor (new) - rated it 5 stars

Taylor The problem is...this book is being compared to books like the Twilight series. This is ridiculous!! Young girls should not be reading this. I believe only 18 and over should beable to buy this book. They are advertising on shelves and have the books out in the open at all the grocery stores and Targets sitting next to YA books.

As an adult, being married I understand sex more than what a young teen would. I like the book, dont get me wrong, but what if Christian was dirt poor and not that good looking, I believe it would freak the hell out of people. Everyone would see it as a very sick book. LMAO!! You know it's true...ALL OF YOU!

Cyndee Thomas Taylor~I agree. Rachel~ good comment. The twilight series..No and "50.."stands alone. Are they really going to make this in to a movie. I do not see how..could not show the sex. For a PG 13 would mean a very tame movie???

Danielle Janine wrote: "over 21 and under 49..."

Under 49? Really? Why is that?

I think honestly that this book is kind of a "beginner erotica," and as much as I didn't like the book (AT ALL) I think it's kind of neat how it's opened up people's reading horizons, so to speak. So rather than assigning an age (because what do I even know about being a teenager these days, I'm almost 30 which is 50 Shades years is like a million) I'd say it's got more to do with what you want to read - if you feel like you are ready to read somewhat graphic(ish) sex and are compelled by the reviews of this book, give it a go. But at least take a close look at the negative reviews and WHY people who don't like it feel the way they do. There is a lot in there that is problematic, and most of it has nothing to do with sex.
I'm fairly certain I would have read it as a younger teen if it had existed, though i'm pretty sure I would have hidden it from my parents. Teenagers have been finding and reading/watching porn on the internet since it's existed, I'd say this kind of goes in the same category.

The way it's written it seems like it's for a less mature audience anyway (the author was obviously scared to use actual body part vocabulary, instead option for "down there" and other euphemisms - kind of immature and not sexy imo, but this isn't a review of the book so.)

Though I'd definitely recommend other books over this one, any day. (Need to throw that in there)

message 176: by Vail (new) - rated it 1 star

Vail Under 18 - take a pass on this one and pick up some good old Norma Klein. She writes sex for your age bracket and they are much better written and fairly juicy with a real plot and developed characters who deal with issues more in-line with what you're about to face for the next half-decade of your life.

^ haha this is exactly where my "beginner erotica" comment comes from. The age range for kink doesn't expire - if someone was into it in their 30s 20 years later they probably still are.

Though based on the follow up for these books I guess it's all new to a lot of people.

message 180: by Linette (last edited Sep 20, 2012 10:45AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Linette McShane Forfar Yeah I mean if this book came out when I was your age I know I could read it and be mature about it and not think I had to do all that kind of stuff to make a guy like me, but that is me. If you are a mature level headed teen that can decifer between reality and fantasy I think you should be okay but if you wait until your 18 it would be fine. I loved the book and found it interesting. I don't partake in that kind of sexual activity but I am not a prude or repressed about the act of sex either. Would I want to be a relationship like that probably not but that's the whole appeal of the book, is that it is something different and unknown to me.

Today with the media always having everything be so sexualized and shoving sex in our faces, in a negative way I don't think its a good idea for anyone younger than 18 to read it. I am even a little disgraced with teen nick and the shows they have for teens.

I would even suggest that some should not read it until they are at least a junior or senior in college depending on their maturity level.

The choice is ultimately yours, go with your gut! I am sure you won't forget the title of the book so you have plenty of time to read it.

Kathy Lisa wrote: "Just wondering what you think the suitable age should be... I'm sixteen and I've heard that this book is really good but I'm not really sure if it's appropriate for someone of my age. I heard there..."

This is not a good book period. It is poorly written, full of cliches and depending where you are in relationships/maturity it may give you some ideas about what is or is not healthy in a relationship. Yes, it is "just sex", but even though I have enjoyed some steamy books in my time, this one was just silly.

message 182: by Heather (new) - rated it 1 star

Heather Yep its just a lot of graphic sex. The book is horribly written and the main characters are shallow imitations of Edward and Bella from Twilight. If you haven't read that book I would start there. No one of any age needs to read this one.

I think I agree with you it mostly depends on also what kind of a reader you are
If a person generally attaches themselves with characters in the books then as a teen I think one should not
For me the book is just something which is thrilling and I am in no way attached to the outcomes of the book and thus it doesn't have any effect on me
hope this helped

message 187: by Dawn (last edited Sep 21, 2012 04:22AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dawn Galland It would depend on the maturity level of the reader. Know at age 16 (now 47) I was reading books like Go Ask Alice and other more mature novels and they did not scar me for life. Some of the books I read early were really graphic and had whole lot of disfunction in them. With all the hype these books have I can see that they would entice young readers to want to see what they are about. When they first came out i thought they were young adult books. Their is a lot more story to them then I had heard. I can see where some YA would have a hard time with them. Would I have let my 16 year old read them ...probably only because she was very mature for her age and also a mature reader (she is 20 now). Lets be honest you can tell a child no and they will find away to read it if they really want to. I would rather my child come to me with questions with my knowledge of her/him reading it then reading behind my back and not asking questions. Also have to ask do movies, music videos, or lyrics to music scar young adults? I have seen movies for teens that make me blush.

Beatrix Absolute adult book, as there's a deeper meaning - of childhood sexual abuse. Actually, I do not think the book is so big shot, you interested in bdsm I recommend instead Cherise Sinclair's books. Otherwise I'm forty years old.

Go Ask Alice was such a good book, I read it when I was about 15 as well.

message 191: by Carmon (new) - rated it 4 stars

Carmon If you think you are mature enough to deal with the emotional and physical violence as well as the sex then give it a shot. I'm 18 and I just read the first book, I'd read worse than this at 14 and I didn't have a problem with it. It's all up to whether or not you think YOU can deal with it.

message 192: by Cyndee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Cyndee Thomas I agree this is not a series for everyone. I agree that I will not reread the three books.Dawn~I liked Go ask Alice too, read it in middle or highschool. Mr and Mrs. Bo Joe? Jones was also good. Now,there will be loads of books out like "Fifty Shades of Grey". We can make the choice to read these or not.

message 193: by Jodie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jodie it's not so much about age it is your reading ability, being able to know the difference between sex and sensations, i know 20+ year old who have read it and just read the sex and laugh when we discuss it, it is more about your maturity than your age, i'm 21 but my attitude and understanding is that of more than someone twice my age.

Harrietb I read all three at the beginning of summer, and I'm sixteen. I thought it was good, and it's really not even as bad as everyone makes out. Seriously, I'm not a slut or anything and I'm innocent-ish, but this book is not horrible at all. Literally at all. Read it, it's amazing.

Crs2005 I think 18 is a good age
