How old should someone be to read this book?

People really need to put this book in perspective, it's not a young adult book, and it is Fiction !
Honestly, it depends on the reader. I read Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy when I was seventeen and barely batted an eye. And the "steamy" parts of Fifty Shades are, tbh, boring as hell.
I'm 13 and I read Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, and I feel as if I am mature enough to read something this descriptive about the content. Many say it's for those 18 and older but even if you are 18 how does that show your maturity? I think it depends more on how comfortable and mature you are about the content .
I definitely think that this book is not for young impressionable minds, like most adult forms of entertainment. With so many forms of media that influence our young today parents have to be responsible in informing our childre in what is appropriate. While this book and others like it are adult forms of entertainment we must remember that it is fictional and no one in thier right mind would recommend someone like the characters in a erotic novel for thier kids.
I definitely think that this book is not for anyone under 17. But if someone under that wanted to read it then I believe it is up to the parents to decide.
I'm 13 and I'm not even bothering asking my parents if I can read it. With the kinds of things I've seen online, I know I could handle it though. Honestly, I don't think adults realise how bad high school is. There're just too protective! If you think you'll be fine then read it; I'm half tempted myself but I'm not willing to risk getting in trouble. If you're allowed then go for it!
Nobody should read this book, no matter the age. The dumps of creativity is what it is. And to think a second movie is in the makes.
The sad part about this book and the movie is that many young women have the misconception that the behaviour in this book by the characters is what love is ,and that is so very far from the truth. Only a very mature adult can know the difference. The author wrote a book of erotic behavior nothing more. There are millions of books that have been written and being written on the same subject. They should not be confused with the reality of real life. And children should never read them.

It's not that I've experienced any of these things before but really, it's how you view the subject. I focused on..."I'm intrigued. I don't want to insult you so don't take it the wrong way. I never liked this book due to the emotional detachment. So I would like to hear and see it through someone else eyes , views.
How did you get attached to the characters and focused on the emotional aspect. What was emotional for you?.
I'm 15... should I read it? I've heard that it was quite sexual and dirty, but is it okay to read it?
It depends. I read this book when I was 13 and was perfectly fine. Not scarred like everyone was saying, I bet if I told my parents they would have told me that I was too young, but I was able to fully appreciate the book. I don't really know how this book would scar you... I mean... if you think you can handle reading about this kind of topic then you should definitely read it.

I think that 18+ would be okay to read this. Although there is a LOT of steamy sex in it. And I'm 24 and some of it still bothered me. I gave it a bad review but if you can look over that and a few other things as well then I'd say 18+ is a good age to read it.
I don't see why you have to be 18 to read stuff like this .. i mean every one know about sex and evrything from an early age. Keeping teenagers under 18 from reading or watching anything related to sex won't change a thing.. I personnally don't minde teens under 18 reading this book or any other like it .
There are definitely better things for 16 year olds to read , these books are targeted for bored over 30 year old women , lol
I like any book that gets people to read. As a preteen I was reading erotica and it didn't tempt me to become sexually active, however, it did create excitement around reading. Age and appropriateness is a social construct that can be challenged.

The questios I think may be more apropos, is how naive do you have to be to believe this is anything close to reality in a relationship where one person is a BDSM lifestyler and how long can you read something so poorly written? It was a travesty and almost comical.
Its depends on the readers level of understanding of the subject and ones maturity but if he/she is still uncomfortable than try again later.
Depends on how comfortable you are with sex. It is very mature but at 16 I would have read it. It is subjective
I read this book at the age of 13 honestly I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. I actually enjoyed it. Many of friends thought I was weird but I do spend hours reading romance books. It helps you get another perspective. Also, there is nothing wrong with reading romance books.I'm turning 16 this year...
I'm planning on reading it again but this time in Spanish to check if there is any difference. o.O
As long as you can handle graphic content it's fine. LOL I have read stuff like this at a younger age than you.
Technically it's rated 18+, but the maturity level of the story is more like 12. It just depends on how confortable you are with sexual themes, and especially the mention of BDSM.
I read this book when I was 14, so to all those people who read it at 16 and think it is wrong remember that! Lol
There are not enough comments on here saying that no one should read this book. It's utter trash. It's boring, poorly written, and an awful depiction of the BDSM/kink lifestyle in addition to being just another romance book with a shitty "dominant" guy and a female Mary-Sue doormat.
Don't waste your time, at any age.
Lisa wrote: "Just wondering what you think the suitable age should be... I'm sixteen and I've heard that this book is really good but I'm not really sure if it's appropriate for someone of my age. I heard there..." just go for it honestly if if isn't illustrated there's basically no difference between +18 and 16 rate aside from a few smoky scenes.
Depends on whether they are reading it as erotica or if they actually realize the complexity of the main characters. I think it is more fitting as a read for a mature adult say 30+

True that. There was nothing like a story. Just Like Twilight minus the sex.
