I love that idea, to buy yourself books for Christmas, and lots of them! I think I may follow suit! It would certainly start the year off well. If you like mysteries, I've just discovered Louise Penny's Three Pines series and I'm in heaven!

This past year my goal was 2 books a month, with one being a classic; made the goal. This year I will increase it but not include classics.
Between paper books and Kindle books, I've got over 50 books waiting to be read. I hope to get to more of them. It's frustrating to see them sitting there and not be able to find more time to read.
I'd really like to discover a new mystery series. I love Elizabeth George and Louise Penny. I'm going to have to find something along those lines. I love getting hooked into a great series for the new year!
Susan wrote: "I'm determined to read more of the books I already own. Either I'll have to read more or just avoid requesting books from the library."I keep saying this too!
Sandy wrote: "This past year my goal was 2 books a month, with one being a classic; made the goal. This year I will increase it but not include classics."Sounds far more realistic, especially if like myself, you have a family and job in tow. I also try for an average of two to three books, one of which needs to be a book recommended by my book club members which I would otherwise never have picked up. Read some really great books over the past year through that. Another is another novel or non-fiction book which has been patiently waiting either on my "to read" bookshelf or in the Amazon wish list and then my last choice is my treat of a mystery, currently the latest Val McDermaid "the vanishing point", which is brilliant and I wished I could finish by reading all day.
Leslie wrote: "Susan wrote: "I'm determined to read more of the books I already own. Either I'll have to read more or just avoid requesting books from the library."Have the same problem. The books on my shelf have no due date so I can read them anytime. So I always read the library books first.Anytime turns into never because I always find something I want to read at the library.
My reading goal is too read even more than I do.I would love to get through about 5 books a month. I would also like to discover some new mystery authors and series. I have caught myself just rereading the same books over and over.

I love them and it the great to see the Scandinavians through their own eyes.
Currently I read a book a week, mostly in the evening as my relaxation technique. My goal is to continue that, although to branch out a little and try some new genres. I tend to stay in the mystery/cozy mystery themed books; in 2014 I want to add some biographies or other non-fiction to the mix.
My goal for 2014 is to read the more I can with an husband, a son of 11, nine cats, a new book to write and to translate, housekeeping and my son's homeworks...I can be happy with two or three books a month (waiting for holidays!)
I've read all Mary Higgins Clark's books and I really love them. I've some problems to find similar authors translated in Italian. (I still read only in Italian)
Tina wrote: "My goal for 2014 is to read at leat 1 a week. Cozy mystery etc, Today I bought Echo by Alyson noel and Bewitching by Alex Flinn at Booksamillion. Can't wait to start!!"I haven't read anything by Alyson Noel in some time. I loved the first book in her Immortal series and then the next 2 just pissed me off. Have thought about finishing up that series, but don't know if I'm up for it or not!
Tina wrote: "What would u recommend for paranormal genre?"Chloe Neill - Chicagoland vampire series.
Darynda Jones - Grim Reaper/Charley Davidson
Those are my absolute favourites. Melodie can recommend lots of other really good ones. :)
My reading goal for 2013 was to read / catch-up on 5 series. I completed the 5th series just before Thanksgiving and hope to add a 6th this month. All of the series were cozy mysteries. I followed the rules for this challenge which included series with only 1 book to read and reading up to the last published book but....one of my 'completed' series authors published 2 more books this year after I finished her latest and I only had one book to read in two of the series. The largest number read to complete a series was six. I did not count series where I just quit reading that author.Next year I am setting a goal of completing 6 series. I think the average number of unread books is 3 to 6 but a few are significantly higher (8+). Almost all of my series reads are cozies and there are way more than 6 with unread books. I won't read all of them but there will be six less unfinished.

I'll second Jennifer on the Chicagoland Vampires. I think I got her started with them. If you want cozy series with a paranormal bent, Heather Blake/Webber has 3 different series. She writes the Lucy Valentine series as Heather Webber and the Wishcraft & Magic Potion series as Heather Blake. If you like YA I love Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series and Maggie Stiefvater's Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. Give me a bit and I'll come up with some more!

I've read Darynda Jones in Italian (wanted to see how she writes about a topic I also use, in a different way) and I loved her “First grave on the Right”1
I am three books from reaching my goal of 100 books this year, so I'm going to make it! Next year I'll try for 105. I also want to complete the 50 states challenge this year. I started it 12/7/13, so I want to finish it by the same date next year.
My last goal is to complete two bookish posts a week on my new blog http://wonbooksblog.blogspot.com/
Three reading goals for 2014! It will be a busy year!

Wow! That's great, Elizabeth. It's a little more than eight books a month. I dont't think I can do that.
Robin wrote: "i AM TRYING TO INCREASE MY READING i CAN REad a book in 24 hours if it is a fiction book"So encouraged by your words! I've just read (not more than an hour ago) a report about reading in Italy... They wrote: only 6,3% are good readers. Do you want to know what they mean about good reader? A reader that read about 12 books in a year.
I want to read these comments above all the day to feel a bit better.
I am cheered by these ambitious goals. Especially the 50 states, 100 books & 2 bookish posts on blog a week.
Brava!
My hope is to claim a better place to locate all my To-reads, such as a big basket. Currently they are hither & yon around the house & even the back seat of the car.
Also, I hope for a better light to read by in the winter months.
Great Goodreads expectations for a fabulous 2014 of rich reading.

I could see how you need a little boost after reading that!
To read the books I have piling up on my Kindle. Also to discover new authors that I am excited about and to read all of their books. Susan Bernhardt
1. Actually read some current books, you know, ones published in 2014. So I can vote on more than a book or two at the end of the year.2. Finish some of the many series I've been reading. I've shelved them - I currently have about 314 books to read in series I've started. But it conflicts with goal #1 so...
3. Try again to hit the 150 books in 2014.
Just found the "featured authors list" so I'll try to read one book from each author this year. That feels like a do-able goal.
My goal for 2013 was 50 books. For 2014 i am going to raise that to 60.I also would like to read some of the books that I downloaded on my Nook just because they were free.
My main goal this year is to rate all the books I read in 2014. I also want to read some new authors and genres.
Hi Jamie Lynn, you can download the free Kindle reader software for your computer and read on your computer screen. Just a thought. :-)
Thank you Teresa! As an author, I know how important ratings and reader reviews are. I think every publisher encourages authors to ask readers to rate or review. I so appreciate your goal for 2014!!!!!!
I am trying to read 200 books in 2014 but will soon realize that I will have to lower that goal. I work too much to probably go through that much literature. I am also an author and am beginning to write again and that will take time out my reading pleasure. I already have like 40 books in the floor on my closet that need to be read, so what do I do?...add more to it.
Lisa wrote: "Thank you Teresa! As an author, I know how important ratings and reader reviews are. I think every publisher encourages authors to ask readers to rate or review. I so appreciate your goal for 2014!..."Lisa,
You are so welcomed.
I'm doing an A to Z reading challenge and I am going to try and go through my backlog of books and any book for this challenge be something on my shelf (kindle or print) prior to 2013. Only exception being for the harder letters (X, Q, Z). I read quite a few books this year (around 190 I think) and I imagine next year will be about the same since I also do a review blog.
Kathryn wrote: "I'd like to try one of the Miss Silver mysteries by Patricia Wentworth this year."Sounds interesting, I'll have to check them out.
Melodie wrote: "I have GOT to start reading more of the stuff I have on my Kindle!"Ha ha ha! Yes, I keep adding books and it is getting ridiculous! I am also going to try to read more of the paperbacks that are already on my shelves in 2014!
@Janie and Kathryn - I really enjoy the Miss Silver mysteries! Hope you do too :)
only bearly got ten books done this year, I hope to get through my Alex cross series by James Patterson, never get around to it and many other books.
I was just emphasizing with all the posts about reading books already owned. I too am working on dusting off those reads on my shelf.
To finish the Violet Eden Chronicles/Embrace series by Jessica Shirvington(final book comes out this year, I think it's the final book...just read Endless this month)...And to try to finish the Miss Julia books by Ann B Ross (15 total was far as I know)
For 2013, I set my GR challenge at 52 but I also challenged myself to only buy 12 books in 2013 (to save money and decrease my stash). Well....I am currently reading book number 54, but I did purchase 19 books (4 for cost on the Kindle, 3 at the Dollar Tree, and 3 with a gift card fr Chrstmas) and about another 20 for free on the Kindle and was given about another 20 books by a coworker. So for money saving purposes, I was pretty successful but not for decreasing my stash...it is just as big and now Kindle has a huge stash also.2014: GR challenge will be 60 (including 5 "classics") and again I will try to only purchase 12 new books and decrease my physical stash, not worried so much about the digital stash as it doesn't clutter my house.
Hmm.. New Years Resolution... to read more, and to catch up on series that I have started. I almost always read on my Kindle now, received it 2 years ago for Christmas, and just LOVE it. It has opened up a whole new world for me as far as genre's go, b/c I can just find them online. I would like to read 100 books in 2014. Not sure how many I read in 2013, but I do know that my Kindle has over 500 books on it, most having been read.
Well, I challenged myself to read 200 books in 2013 and found it quite taxing. There were weeks when I didn't get to do any reading at all and for a while, I lost my drive to read. I ended up reading a number of Novellas to reach my goal and am therefore going to choose slightly less for 2014's challenge. That being said, I am going to challenge myself to read 100 full length novels in 2014. Of that 100 novels, I would like 50 to be mystery and the other 50 a mix of paranormal, urban fantasy, and sci-fi novels. The majority of the books I read in 2013 were paranormal so I'm going to jump start 2014 by reading mysteries novels the first three months of the year. I will begin with Peggy A. Edelheit's Samantha Jamison Mystery series.
In 2013 I challenged myself to read 60 books and I'll up that to 70 for 2014. I like the idea of not purchasing as many - I'm going to try to limit my book purchases to only 10 - I have quite a stockpile plus I'm a librarian in my local public library so I have great access to books without buying.
Peg wrote: "Will try Proust this year!"That's a good challenge!
My mystery-related challenges are:
·finish my "Read the USA" challenge (I have about 25 more to go!!)
·read more of the mysteries already on my shelves! especially the Rex Stout and Michael Innes books...
·read at least 7 mysteries originally written in a language other than English (I have a list in mind)

If you haven't added Boris Akunin's Erast Fandorin mysteries to your list, you may want to check them out.
I have been hooked on audio books for many years and find that more Cozy Mysteries are now available in the audio format. My 2014 listening goals include at least one cozy per month, keeping up on my series books and finishing the Earth's Children series. Also my goal is to not only listen to the books but to review and rate them here at GoodReads and/or at audible.com
I would like to read one non-fiction book on a regular basis..in a set ratio. Maybe 5:1 or 10:1. (I originally thought to try 1/month but think that would be a bit much
for a starter goal.)
I'm also on the more reading list. In the last few years I almost hardly read any books. In 2013 I got an E-reader and I was a bit, well... against it? Because I love the feeling of holding a real book. But with the ability to buy books online and take them everywhere, I was taken away by it. So, I started to read more. It's still not much, because I only read 28 books in 2013, but it's a start.2013 is also the year I learned about Cozy Mysteries and it's a genre I very, very much like.
So for 2014 I've set a goal for 50 books. When I'm close to it and still have time, I will up that number.
On a personal level, 2014 has got to be the year I finally find a job :)
