I come from the *ahem* generation where there was only one choice. That beautiful background on the cover, with a romantic Hero/Heroine to complete the setting and to make you want to spend the grocery money for that one book or two. Now..I do have an ereader, and I admit I have only used it once.I must say the only good point for me is I can change the font. Otherwise I get fed up with 'taping' to turn the pages and watching my battery levels, and no cover while reading to "bond" with. Now audio books..tried them too,but found I couldnt connect with the "voices" as where in a book the characters take on their own voice, and my mind starts to wander or I fall asleep. So for me, no matter what new "fangle" thingy comes out the good old PB will remain my first choice..even if I have to "squint" to read it.
So? How about you? what do you prefer? What works best and that you enjoy the most for your reading pleasure?

Plain ol' book. I use the ereader occasionally, but when I go to get it, the battery's either died from disuse or it gets sapped fast because of my usual interrupted reading (on/off/on/off). :-\

I've gotten better about audiobooks. I used to fall asleep or tune them right out, but I've improved my concentration so I can usually hear more than I tune out now. But a new classic rock radio station is probably going to be my listening choice in the car on the my work commute now instead of books. :)

Book foremost! But I generally find e-books and adapt to whatever I have on hand. Maybe it's that my favorites are expected to be hard copies, but if I had the space, all of them would be! ;o I've rather enjoyed these last two weeks with a few I bought and were loaned. :)

My Kindle has atleast a two weeks of battery life. What sort of e-readers do you guys have?

Speaking of which, Walmart has a good deal on Kindle's at the moment. I think the regular one was $79, and you get a $30 Walmart card back.

I tried the audio in the car and was so distracted from thinking about where I was going..I knew this was not a good idea.:(

We dont get Kindle here..Kobo ereaders is what there is, its battery life sucks..I want to read a book not concentrate on what I need to do to keep it going! PB's are so easy..open..close. :)But the ereaders are great for cheap books..and no shelving issues.

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) | 214 comments Sandi, Staples is selling kindles now, if you can believe it. :)

I have a kindle, and while I like the fact that I can stockpile HUNDREDS of books on it, I still enjoy reading an actual paperback better. Although I must admit I've caught myself trying to click on the cover of a paperback to look up a word in the book.

@Tammy--my friend Yoshio bought a Kindle Touch from Staples earlier, too. It was $82 after tax. He also purchased a pack of no. 2 pencils, to push the cost up to over $100, and they've got a special for $25 off every $100 spent!!

message 9: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) | 214 comments That's hilarious! Sounds like our local grocery store - they have a promo where for every $10 you get stickers, then collect enough and you can get dishes. The cashiers have apples, kiwis and bananas at the till to bump your purchase up if you're short. :)

I'm hoping to get a similar kind of Walmart deal with the Kindle Fire, eventually. A co-worker saved $50 on it going that route.

I have an Aluratek eLibre and it works fine except sometimes when I'm sure a dodgy file is to blame for it freezing. *cough cough* As for battery life, I have no idea. It's so erratic because whenever I've read it, I have to set it down and go run interference with the critters or some random chore and it times out or gets turned off and back on a dozen times within an hour. And I don't want to leave it plugged in all the time because those adapters are vampire energy suckers.

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 840 comments Mod
What is the difference Karla between a kindle & kindle fire?

@ Tammy being in Canada too..you cant get the "freebie's that Misfit always lets us know about?
It dosent apply to us right?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Kindle Fire can play movies as well. It's like a mini iPad, I think. I'd rather get the highest end model after it's been out a few years and the price has come down. :P

Everything that Misfit has posted, I've been able to get. When you have a kindle in Canada you have to do all of your kindle orders thru amazon.com as opposed to .ca.

Sandi, you're right - the source has kindle, staples has sony and kobo. Oops.

And isn't the kindle fire the same as a laptop (ie. can't read outside the way you can with a kindle?)

message 16: by Tracyk (new)

Tracyk | 110 comments I love my Kindle, no more having to be careful with the amount of books to take on holiday (kindle so much lighter) no more having to wait for books to come through the post.

Thanks Tammy then its to The Source I will go to seek one out..but do you get the freebie's free? I thought I saw it say International N/A ? Are you charged for the US exchange when you buy?

message 18: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant (tamgrant) | 214 comments You can order them online from the source, I think. Everything to do with your kindle is done on amazon.com. If you go to amazon.ca you click on the kindle and it takes you to the us site. Then you tell it what country you're from, and register your kindle (if you haven't bought it from amazon). It's super easy. Prices and freebies are virtually identical, I've only had a couple of instances where I couldn't get a book because of the country I'm from.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 75 comments I'm a real book girl all the way. Have yet to try ebooks and really don't think I wanna. I just love the actuality of holding a book in my hand, the size and shape, the smell of the pages. Mmm, nothing better than the smell of a brand new book... As for audio, I've tried a couple of times when I was younger and my mind always wandered. Keep meaning to try em again but just haven't gotten round to it. :)

message 23: by Fil (new)

Fil (magab64) | 22 comments I'm a fan of both kind of. I love my nook color, but I also love a book. The nook is much easier for me, I take it everywhere, and I am never out of battery life or a book. But, if I truly love the book, I will also get in PB and put it on my keeper shelf - just in case something happens to my ereader - crazy I know. :)

message 24: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I love all 3. When I'm just relaxing and reading at thome I like print. When I'm reading at work I like my Kindle: no worry about embarrassing book covers, no worry about book marks, a lot of books in one slim device incase I can't get into a book or finish one and need another.

Audiobooks allow me to "read" while I'm doing dishes, walking dogs, cleaning house, cooking etc..,

With the audio books Mary, dont you find it hard to concentrate while doing other stuff?

message 26: by Mary X (last edited Apr 30, 2012 04:44PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Not usually. Depends on what I'm doing. Loading a dishwater, hauling laundry up and down the stairs then folding it and putting away, walking dogs, mopping and vacuuming floors, chopping veggies etc.. doesn't require much concentration and I can easily follow an audiobook.

Online shopping, reading something, paying bills and stuff like that-no audiobook going.

I get through half a CD just dressing, doing my hair and putting my makeup on each morning. I just listened to most of a CD driving the dogs to the dog park, then to the gas station and home again.

My new car has an MP3 dock which I love. When the car stops, the IPOD pauses and I can pick up where I left off next time I listen.

BookLuva28 | 65 comments I'm definitely with you on good ol' fashioned paperback Sandi! Not only do I love the covers, but there's just nothing like cracking open a book (even if it's old and used) and turning it's precious pages. I even love the smell that accompanies a paperback. I own a Nook (one of the first models that came out) and barely used it. Not to mention how it kept crapping out on me; maybe I don't have much luck with ereaders. Whatever the case maybe, I don't entirely get the same pleasure of reading when I'm on an electronic device. I think somehow it's more intimately personal with an actual book if that makes sense at all. :)

message 29: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Another thing I love about the kindle is the quotes/notes feature. I love to quote in reviews and/or my GR updates. If you own a kindle or kindle app, you should have your own amazon kindle page. Log on to kindle.amazon.com with your regular Amazon account info. Look for the highlights page. Anytime you synch for new items there they are. Copy and paste to review and/or GR update. No retyping holding the darned book open.

Now that it's spring and gardening season is upon me, I''ll be able to listen to audiobooks more since I'll have hours of mindless yard work and need something to make the time pass faster.

However, one autumn even listening to Drood while raking leaves didn't make the book any more interesting and I had to DNF it or fall asleep on my feet and poke my eye out with the rake handle. :P

Nah..too much work just to read a book..for me I like open..close..easy-peasy. I have a note book beside me while reading to take down notes if I want..the ol'fashion way :D

message 33: by Mary X (last edited Apr 30, 2012 07:31PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I don't bother with notes & highlights and such.

I will never convert fully to an ereader. But it is a darn handy tool to have around. Trolling for freebies has helped feed my book acquiring urge without costing me money or adding to the nearly 1,000 print books I have here. So far I've found several of my paperbackswap WL books as freebies on Amazon and about a dozen of my print books have popped up as freebies. So they can be purged to free up shelf space. But I think most ebooks are over priced and too restrictive. (If I pay for it should be mine to do whatever I want with it).

So my main source of reading is in print. I have a lot of downtimes at work where I have nothing to do but answer the phone if it rings. I spend a lot of time on hold with freight companies. My Kindle allows me to bring 300+ books to work. I frequently send samples of my TBR books to my Kindle and read the first 30 or 40 pages at work.

message 34: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I prefer my Bodice Rippers in print and preferably with their original embarrassing cover and not a reprint with something boring castle or country scene.

Audios are great for commutes and while working or cleaning (ugh!). Makes the day go by faster and I feel I'm getting "reading" time in still. It does take a little getting used to it but you find a good narrator it makes it a lot easier. I do some of my favorite series as re-reads by audiobook, especially if a new one is coming out soon it kind of refreshes everything for me.

message 36: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 75 comments Hmm, maybe if I gave audio a shot I might get more housework done? Lol, might be worth a try at least :)

Same here. I've got a blank journal book that I scribble in. I love to type and don't mind proofreading, so the old way works just fine for me. The times I've used bookmarks in my ereader I never go back and look through them. It doesn't even occur to me. :P I'm definitely a near-total Luddite. And, looking at my TBR with so many books that will probably never see the light of day as ebooks, the urge to focus on them keeps pulling me in that direction.

message 38: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I have the Kindle PC app on my work computer, and I do sneak a page here and there on my down times. Easier to look like I'm doing something at the computer work related than sitting there holding a book (which wouldn't go over well). It depends how many chiefs are hanging around that day.

Karla, I don't mind typing, but writing is another story, as is remembering to keep a journal with me. I either have to tag the page I want to quote with small sticky notes or run up right off to GR and post the quote on the update. Takes time away from reading.

I never go back to the notes at the back of my e-book, but I do look through them on my kindle page to see if there's a quote I want to use for my review.

message 39: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) Book and e reader right now. I have lots of books but I'm no longer buying new ones. I'm getting my new books on my kindle. I don't do audio.

message 40: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I use audiobooks for rereads too when I've gone too long between books in a series If I can get the CDs from the library.

My house is always cleaner when I've got a really good audiobook going. Makes scrubbing pots and mopping floors at least somewhat enjoyable.

I'm actually making myself a nice bookshelf(well, one I found at a yardsale, painting and stuff), to accentuate my living room, so I can keep my favorite paperbacks on hand. I have another bookshelf for hardbacks only. That mostly consists of signed autographs, old books, and my prized Edgar Allan Poe volumes from the late 1800s.
