"And" vs "&"

When the book "Charm & Strange" by Stephanie Kuehn was entered into Goodreads, it was added with the ampersand (I didn't add it). It was unsearchable then by "Charm and Strange," and the title was then changed in Goodreads to "Charm and Strange." It's now not searchable that way, but it IS searchable by "Charm & Strange" now.

What's the correct format/why is one searchable and the other not? Is there a big time overlap of changing it in Goodreads and having it searchable?
