Silver The trick is to draw what you see, not what you think you see.

Ok tips:

-use references. THEY ARE KEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY TO LIFE. Even if you're drawing a character from your mind, use some anatomy references.

-learn proportions. Learn them for the face, hands, body, etc...

-go from general to specific. When you begin drawing or painting, begin with a basic shape and add more details. (This is my technique, you don't have to do this if you prefer something else)

-Study nature. Nature is not perfect, and you will NEVER find perfect circles or squares in nature. Man-made objects are different.

-compare one thing to another. So when you're drawing a flower, for example, always compare the size of one space to another (such as one petal to a second petal) this will help with proportions.

-There's some thumb technique for looking at proportions you can look up cuz I don't know it.

Silver when I draw, I measure stuff with my pencil. I had like 3 art lessons and my teacher showed me how to measure all the parts of the face but I mostly eyeball it. I've only been successful once with that measuring technique and it was a charcoal drawing I did in class >.

Use a grid system if you're going for accuracy
Freehand if you're going to a more personal take on the subject so you can emphasize things you like

But yeah basically everything Talia already said because she's the master of the universe very knowledgeable. Start off with photos and then move to life drawing

oh I hadn't thought of using a grid system I should try that

message 9: by Silver (new)

Silver I've never used a grid system because I'm too lazy XD and it almost feels like cheating to me XD

It's useful if you're gonna paint a wall or a mural and you have a sketch down but you need to transfer it, so it's not exactly cheating :P

I fail at them, but it works for some people so it's worth a go...
