I think I would die if there wasn't color, any other opinions?

message 2: by LE (new) - rated it 2 stars

LE I suppose if I’d never known colour, I wouldn’t miss it. A world without colour would be awful though – it would make understanding the traffic light system really difficult. He he :)

Katie BingBag not if your colorblind, they have it green yellow red, and always keep it that way, so that people who are colorblind know when to go and stuff.

Steven If you've never known color, you wouldn't miss is. You'd have never known any of the things missing from the world in The Giver.

Yes, yes it would be.

I probably wouldn't be able to stand not having music, as I'm a musician in many things.

Caroline Tirzah wrote: "Like other people said, you probably wouldn't miss it if you never knew it. But since we do know it, it would be awful. Worse yet, I would die if I did not have the memory of music...life would be ..."

Ditto.

Like others have said if you didn't know what colors were then you wouldn't know you were missing something

Kirby yeah, I'd rather lose color than music...

Heather White I would hate that! At least you wouldn't have to worry about your clothes matching. :)

Caroline Lemondrop wrote: "I would hate that! At least you wouldn't have to worry about your clothes matching. :)"

HAHA so true :)

Jenn I think for people who are visual learners or just visually inclined over other senses, they may feel like something is missing. Some people, including myself, make associations between color and words and/or numbers. No one would die over it, but you may appear duller than you would be if you had color. It sounds horribly depressing to live without color or music, whether you know what you're missing or not.

yes thta seemed a little far fetched to me.

Kelsey Did anyone else think of the movie Pleasantville when reading this book?

Kirby Kelsey wrote: "Did anyone else think of the movie Pleasantville when reading this book?"

ha ha, I did! I loved that movie! :D

Kelly I tend to agree with those who say if you had never known its existence you wouldn't miss it.

I don't understand... if you're colour blind how would having the traffic light green yellow and red make you be able to tell the difference??

and to reply to the actual thread topic: I wouldn't die if we had no colours, because I wouldn't know what colours were in order to know the difference. Just like in the book, the boy doesn't even know how to describe what is happening when he starts to see the colour red. All he can say is that it changed, but he can't say how it changed because he had never seen anything like it. he didn't know what a colour was.

Rachel Steven wrote: "If you've never known color, you wouldn't miss is. You'd have never known any of the things missing from the world in The Giver."

I agree. If it was never there in the first place, you would simply be oblivious. However, if someone were to take away my colour now, after experiencing it my whole life, things would change dramatically.

Kirby Nat wrote: "I don't understand... if you're colour blind how would having the traffic light green yellow and red make you be able to tell the difference?? "

my understanding is that some color-blind individuals can distinguish those colors (it's rare to be blind to all colors), and that- even if they can't- they can go by the position. so as long as the green, yellow, and red are always in the same order, it's possible to understand the traffic signal.

Quick note: the ‘Traffic Light System’ comment was just an attempt at a humorous addition to my statement, not a well-thought-out deep discussion generator :) Oh no, don’t pee on the comedy-bonfire with literality :P (Warning: this is a metaphorical bonfire – no flames were harmed in the making of this unfunny joke. He he)

message 21: by soap (new) - rated it 2 stars

soap Yeah. I would hate to be color blind, or even living in that world. Color is very important (and also the code that I use to remember various things). If there was no color, I would fail school (although that sounds completely unrelated).

Maitha Mana Color is merely a symbol in the book. Colors can be easily portrayed as happiness to some- yet the complete opposite for others. It's all differences and alike brought together. In the book, It tried to show us how life would be without differences. Equality upon all would be a tragedy. Same thoughts (if any) and same feelings (if any). Or at least that's what I think. Why am I commenting this?

Caroline Sophia wrote: "Yeah. I would hate to be color blind, or even living in that world. Color is very important (and also the code that I use to remember various things). If there was no color, I would fail school (al..."

Without colors I wouldn't be able to color coordinate everything lol. That is how I know what is due for school.

Steph Like many have said, we wouldn't mind if we didn't know what we were missing.

Who knows? There are probably other elements/sensations that do exist, but that humans are unable to perceive.

Audrey Klosterman how can there be no color?! That's terrible! But i love this book :)
