Michael (knowledgelost) A place to discuss self hosted wordpress sites

message 2: by Anika (new)

Anika Claire (angelya) | 24 comments I'm on self-hosted wordpress. It's taken a bit of tweaking to get it set up and I'm still not entirely happy (perfectionist) but it's a lot more flexible than the wordpress.com version I was using before!

Michael (knowledgelost) I'm glad to meed another self-hosted blogger. I started with wordpress.com but I moved over to self hosting because there was so much I wanted to do on my blog that I didn't have a chance to do via wordpress.com

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 7 comments I'm on Wordpress, and I've clocked up over 150 posts. Best result is 30 visits a day.

message 5: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) I'm sure we can help improve that :)

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 7 comments That would be wonderful!!

Mark Webb (markwebb) | 3 comments I'm on self hosted Wordpress as well. I love the flexibility, but I must admit I'm constantly playing with settings, plugins etc.

Michael (knowledgelost) That's a good point Mark; plugins, what do people recommend

message 9: by Jenna (new)

Jenna I've noticed a lot of bloggers make the jump from Blogspot to Wordpress lately - has anyone here done that? What's is the drawcard?

To Wordpress.com or self hosted? Personally I think both are better than blogger but I think that's more about personal taste

Philippa (Tea in the Treetops) (teadaydreamsandfairytales) | 9 comments I've only ever used self-hosted Wordpress primarily because you can alter the CSS and install some great nifty widgets!

Kate (fictionalkate) | 10 comments What are some of the advantages of self-hosted wordpress over wordpress.com?

message 13: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) The biggest draw card is its completely customizable. Also a bigger range of themes, plugins and widgets

Wordpress.com is quite limited in what you can do with it - no scripts, limited themes, no plugins... even blogger is a lot more customisable. Self-hosted wordpress leaves you completely free to do whatever you like with it. It's a bit scary at first until you work out what you actually want your blog to look like, but the freedom is fantastic!

Kate (fictionalkate) | 10 comments Thank you both for your answers :)

Anika Claire (angelya) | 24 comments There's a few extra benefits discussed in this post on Novel Publicity. Hope it helps!

message 17: by Sherri (new)

Sherri (fabledhattress) | 60 comments I checked out the thing with making my blog 'my own' by buying my domain from wordpress.com.... But I can't exactly do that just now because I've got to help with groceries and things cuz I'm the only one in my family with a steady job thats getting paid on a regular basis :/ which also means switching my phone company will have to wait as well....Any suggestions for someone wanting to switch to self hosted?

message 18: by T (new)

T (lalalalalala0000p) I'm hopping to soon transfer my blog to wordpress.org. The biggest thing I want to have is the Goodreads Quote Widget. Can anyone here tell me if that works on Wordpress.org? It defiantly doesn't on Wordpress.com.

message 19: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) It does work on wordpress.org but I should also work on wordpress.com as well

Right now I don't have a self hosted site with wordpress.com. maybe that's why it dosen't work.

message 21: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) How are you doing it? from what I can see it should work if you post the widget code directly into a text widget.

Wordpress.com block JavaScript. I've tried in vain to copy and paste the code in a text box. I notice the code alters when I save it.

There is a Goodreads widget Wordpress.com offers, but it just shows the books I've read. That would be okay, except I would prefer the widget to display the lastest books I have read. I have no control over how the list is displayed.

That's all beside the fact. No Java means no quote widget on free wordpress.com sites. (At least to my knowlege)

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) I can't really test it but I know it works on wordpress.org

message 24: by Anika (new)

Anika Claire (angelya) | 24 comments All of the goodreads widgets work on self-hosted wordpress blogs. At least, all the ones I've tried do :) I didn't have any luck getting them to work on wordpress.com apart from the buttons that go directly to shelves.
