High-Brow or Low-Brow

Just curious what my Goodread friends think of this new book. Any notions as to whether this is a worth while read? Is it a cultural Indian immersion novel with great promise or an Americanized long ramble with very little plot extension.

The reviews it has garnered so far are quite mixed.

High-Brow must read? Or Low-Brow wait for the paperback?

I haven't read any reviews, anything with a shot at the Booker is good enough for me and I thought it was a beautiful book with no need for, dare I say, Americanized plot extension. As Ted says, it is poetic and beautiful but I thought it only mildly horrifying. It definitely isn't for everyone, but it is what it is, and those who appreciate good writing and honest depictions will find it worthwhile.

Kata - Not quite the right choice. The book is a poetic evocation of the culture of suffering and degradation within an dieing Indian sub-culture. Poetic, beautiful, horrifying, not for everyone.

I loved this book. So tightly written and gripping to the end. Dimple, Mr. Lee, Rashid, Rumi, all strangers in a strange land choosing to kill the pain of their self-loathing but had they stuck to opium, had the "Moslems" as the author insinuates, not permeated Bombay with "chemical," the drama of heroin would not have quashed Skuklaji Street.

I liked it, & IMHO it's both "a cultural Indian immersion novel" and "an Americanized long ramble".

Kata, go 4 it!! an amazing read. A story about a dying culture in India! Not only in India i guess, because hippie culture cant be seen at any place lyk how it was in the 60s and 70s. A horrifying and gripping novel till the end! I would say this book can surely be used as a study reference for many topics that u may find once you start reading it. The presentation and the dialogues used in the novel is also kick ass. A real Trippy stuff too.
"We made the whole earth a couch for you
and the mountains its tent stakes.
We created you of two sexes
and ordained your sleep for rest"
Sura LXXVIII
This is how it begins!! Hope you will read it. You have to!! PEACE:)

I feel the book is a good read. It wonderfully captures the wild side of India, maybe because this is kind of autobiographical for the author.

It is a "long ramble" of the authors experience in the "chemical den" of Bombay and the various people he meet during the time. Invariably all the characters are addicts trying to forget themselves in chemical induced hallucinations.

It takes us for an emotional ride, wonderfully capturing the high and low of all the wonderfully crafted characters and their love-hate game with life and addiction
