Tired of cookie-cutter young-adult novels? The cure awaits, in the shape of E.C. Myers' astounding Fair Coin — a book which, among other things, achieves the feat of seeming like a dark fairy tale and a clever science fiction epic, rolled into one. It's a fast-moving book full of twists and cool character moments, and definitely ideal for adults who miss the days of engaging, idea-driven science fiction.

Tony Talbot I just read the Io9 review and immediately suggested it to my school library as a to-buy book and dropped it into my to-read list. Sounds fascinating.

Dean Koontz did a quantum-event book, 'From the corner of his eye', which was frankly dull and overlong, but this sounds brilliant!

Agatha (agathab) | 130 comments Oh, goodie, another one for my never ending to-read list.

It does sound intriguing, especially the "dark fairy tale" part of the description (I love fairy tales, I wrote a thesis on fairy tales, I will never stop reading fairy tales).

Also, I don't know why precisely, but the title sounds really good. It just rolls off the tongue really well, I guess.

I'll check out the podcast in the car.

EDIT:
That podcaster sure likes Star Trek.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Was this brought up in the new releases section of one of the recent podcasts? The description sounds very familiar, but I don't listen to many podcasts in general so I can't imagine where else I might have heard of it. I seem to remember not being all that interested when I heard the initial description, but now reading the review I'm intrigued.

Agatha (agathab) | 130 comments I'm pretty sure it was, Kristin. When I read the description I was sure I'd heard it recited before.

Tamahome | 7230 comments It sounds a lot like Ursula K. LeGuin's Lathe of Heaven, which was adapter on PBS a long time ago.

Got it. Reading it. Not bad, really.

Michael Underwood | 116 comments I read it as soon as it came out -- E.C. Myers is a fellow Clarion Westie and friend.

The things I liked best were Ephraim's evolution as a character, struggling with his desires and his sense of responsibility, and the escalation in the book (which I'll leave vague to avoid spoilers).

I think the 'like a Twilight Zone episode but more fleshed out' evaluation is fairly apt, for what it's worth.
