Mostly, I always fall in love with fictional characters and after awhile, it disappears but Jem Finch just won't get out of my heart. His character just turns me on. I love his attitude, he's just brave and all. So there...

I kind of second that Hannah.. Jem is all over you when you're half way into the book. It's like a stupor, but something you like being in :)
Hi, Catherine! Haha, glad I'm not alone. :) I like Atticus as well but maybe in a "fatherly" kind of way. Thank you. :D

Put me down, too!
Hi Hannah, yes, I do think of Atticus in more of a fatherly way, but somehow more like an uncle than anything!
WOW! I see that there are lots of people that are in love with Atticus. I think it's safe to say that someday I won't love him in a "fatherly" kind of way anymore. :)
Omg I love both Atticus and Jem!! Atticus for being just so wise and calm (and yes Gregory Peck helped portray him nicely as well :D) and Jem for being spunky and brave (when I first read the book I imagined Jem more older and cuter, even though I knew he was only what 13 years old? Haha..)
I'm with the Atticus group, but that's because I'm a 32-year-old mom :) But, I always thought that Jem had the potential for being a wonderful man when he grew up - just like Atticus.
Belle wrote: "I'm a little bit in love with the whole Finch family."Very true. I very much wanted to name my second daughter either Scout or Harper, but my husband wouldn't let me! Scout is one of my favorite narrators.

I love Jem, he's amazing, and Atticus is the perfect older man fantasy I think... but I have to say, I'm a Boo Radley fan...
This is all really interesting. I am a new author (collecting rejection slips for 27 years) and would like to one day write a female Atticus. Do any of you think it can be done?Of course yes Boo Radley!! No book is complete without a mysterious baddie.

I wouldn't have gone for Jean Louise, lol. My middle name is Jean, and I've never liked it except for the fact I share it with my mother.
Hermione wrote: "Hannah Beata,I feel the same way as you about Jem. Maybe it was the age we were when we read it..."
Yes, I think so too. I think the idea of making a female Atticus is great! :D

Oh wow! Sounds wonderful! A female Atticus would not just be righteous and moral, but would also hold the feminine qualities like compassion, sensitivity etc
But at the same time, i wonder if she would provide the same feeling of security to the children. Don't get me wrong, but a physically strong father strikes a feeling of security.

Yes it would be a challenge!! You might like my debut novel, Bertha's Journal A Perfect Immelman Turn. Out on Amazon this week - If you read widely then it may appeal to you, because of your comments about the differences between a mother and father...If you do decide to read it I would be interested in your comments. All the best, Hermione
I have a crush on Atticus - but in my mind he will always look like Gregory Peck :) I also love Scout, since she reminds me of myself a little - outspoken, tomboyish, always getting dirty or hurt, knowing how to read very early....
I have always aspired to meet a man like Atticus Finch. Jem is but a boy. A very charming, loveable boy but a boy nonetheless. My thirteen year old self however, would have loved some Jem Finch.

I named my son Jem and had I been blessed with a girl as well she would have been Scout!
When I first read the book I loved Atticus but as a father figure as he is so like my own dad.

Yes, it would be rather difficult to merge that character with a feminine touch...
I am difinitly in love Atticus, or Gregory Peck! I never thought of Jem in that way. I agree Allana, if I was thirteen I would have a creush on Jem.
No I loved Jem Finch too! As well as Atticus!! To Kill a Mockingbird is my all time favorite movie!!
I think a grown up Jem will make a wonderful father, husband and friend. He will be a sexier Atticus. I love Atticus (deeply and purely) but Jem.....yeah!Teatime for the Firefly

Try The Client by John Grisham. Comes pretty close to a female Atticus.

I read To Kill a Mockingbird when it first came out in 1960. I was 13 and naturally fell madly in love with Jem. When the movie appeared and Jem was played so wonderfully by Phillip Alford I fell in love all over again. Now, of course, it's Atticus hands down.
Pam wrote: "I read To Kill a Mockingbird when it first came out in 1960. I was 13 and naturally fell madly in love with Jem. I returned to the book at thirty-four and found it just as engaging, but it is Scout that I loved, she's just so precocious and innocent. She reminds me of Phoebe in Catcher in the Rye.
William wrote: "Pam wrote: "I read To Kill a Mockingbird when it first came out in 1960. I was 13 and naturally fell madly in love with Jem. I was quite the tomboy, but didn't have, and therefore coveted, Scout's outgoing nature.
When I was in junior high, my class read TKAM. I was MADLY in love with Atticus, which everyone thought was extremely weird (as most teenagers have crushes on "hot" young celebrities and not fictional 50-year-old lawyers)... But whatever, I thought Atticus was the perfect person and I especially loved his modesty... not to mention those glasses... I still love him. ;)
