From Omaha to Okinawa: The Story of the Seabees
I posted a couple of years ago re: books on the Pacific War and got some great recs. I've been down the rabbit hole since then and have mostly used the excellent included bibliographies to find additional books. But I'm back, after mention of the Dolittle Raid in my most-recent raid. Anyone have a good book about this? Much thanks.
Jenn wrote: "I posted a couple of years ago re: books on the Pacific War and got some great recs. I've been down the rabbit hole since then and have mostly used the excellent included bibliographies to find add..."I would definitely recommend these two:
Target Tokyo: Jimmy Doolittle and the Raid That Avenged Pearl Harbor
I Could Never Be So Lucky Again

Marc wrote: "Jenn wrote: "I posted a couple of years ago re: books on the Pacific War and got some great recs. It's probably the best book on the subject I've ever read. It just might become the go-to-book on the subject. I gave it 5 stars on GR.
I Could Never Be So Lucky Again is also very good.
happy wrote: "Marc wrote: "Jenn wrote: "I posted a couple of years ago re: books on the Pacific War and got some great recs. I've been down the rabbit hole since then and have mostly used the excellent included ..."Good to know. I'll be picking it up soon.
I fully agree with Marc and Happy in regards to "Target Tokyo", its been the best book I've read on the Doolittle Raid.
Re: Coral SeaI'm a fan of John Lundstrom's works, so I'll point to
The First South Pacific Campaign: Pacific Fleet Strategy, December 1941-June 1942, which is about the strategy that put both sides on the path to the battle.
Black Shoe Carrier Admiral: Frank Jack Fletcher at Coral Seas, Midway, and Guadalcanal is a biography of the sometimes-maligned US commander in that battle.
The First Team: Pacific Naval Air Combat from Pearl Harbor to Midway, which is a very detailed look at the USN's fighter squadrons through Midway.
The Barrier and the Javelin: Japanese and Allied Pacific Strategies, February to June 1942 is also a strategic-background work.
That's what I can think of quickly.
Leigh wrote: "Just wondering if anyone had any suggestion for books on the Battle of the Coral Sea?"On top of Lee's suggestions, there are also these:
Blue Skies and Blood
Queen Of The Flat Tops: The U.S.S. Lexington And The Coral Sea Battle
The Battle for Hell's Island: How a Small Band of Carrier Dive-Bombers Helped Save GuadalcanalThe latter two aren't exclusively about the Battle of the Coral Sea, but they contain lots of information about the Lexington's part in the battle.
The Battle of the Coral Sea: The History and Legacy of World War II’s First Major Battle Between Aircraft Carriers by Charles River
After our last move my library is in two different locations, however, regarding the Battle of the Coral Sea I found this one on my shelf. I have not read it yet but have enjoyed the writings of Edwin P. Hoyt in the past.
by
Edwin P. HoytI also read Queen of the Flat Tops in high school and found it very interesting. I own a copy and have recently been planning to re-read it actually. If I find any others I will post them.
I would like to know if there are any books covering German convoys at sea? There are so many about the Allied convoys.
To be honest Kosie I'm not too sure that the Germans run many, if any, sea convoys, maybe in the Baltic Sea? There are some members here who are keen naval enthusiasts and they might know something more.Any suggestions or ideas folks to help Kosie with his question?
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "To be honest Kosie I'm not too sure that the Germans run many, if any, sea convoys, maybe in the Baltic Sea? Hopefully someone will come up with a book or additional information for you soon. Here is a WW2 film clip of an Allied air attack on a German convoy:

Thank you very much for all the help!!
Kosie wrote: "I would like to know if there are any books covering German convoys at sea? There are so many about the Allied convoys."My only experience is from Coastal Command's perspective:
A Separate Little War: The Banff Coastal Command Strike Wing Versus the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe in Norway September 1944 to May 1945; only small convoys but if memory serves there were one or two eyewitness accounts from the ground.

Thank you very much Jonny, will definitely have a look at it.
Kosie, this book details British torpedo boat attacks on German convoys. It was published in 1945, the author was writing it as the war went on, so there are some goods and bads to that, not having the post war research on events, but he was there ! An interesting angle is that he also often gives the German propaganda that was broadcast about a particular fight.
The Battle of the Narrow Seas: The History of the Light Coastal Forces in the Channel & North Sea, 1939-1945

Rick,
At one point my dad was on loan to Third Army under Patton. I still have his uniform patch. Does that help?
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "I will see what other books I can find Doreen and let you know."Doreen, do you know what division your father was in? That would help in finding some relevant books.
Doreen wrote: "I am looking for ebooks on the Rhineland Campaign which my dad was in and the Battle Of Leyte Gulf which my grandfather was in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks."
Sea of Thunder: Four Commanders and the Last Great Naval Campaign 1941-1945 is also good for a look at both sides in the battle. "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" remains the best, and one of the best war at sea books ever written.

Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win World War II by Liza Mundy
We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese by Elizabeth M. Norman
My wife Anne's grandmother is still alive, and she was a US Navy Intel cryptographer and code breaker. Amazing woman who will still not discuss her "secrets".
Colin wrote: "My wife Anne's grandmother is still alive, and she was a US Navy Intel cryptographer and code breaker. Amazing woman who will still not discuss her "secrets"."That had been the case of most of the women whom Mundy interviewed. Their families had been unaware of their wartime service. It would be interesting to know what your grandmother-in-law thinks of Mundy's book. I feel sure Mundy mentions the restrictions on disclosure being lifted.
She was recruited as her parents were from "Greater Syria" or modern Lebanon, and she spoke Arabic, French, English and learned German, played chess and was a wizard at mathematics. I do know that she was one of the few American women to have knowledge of Ultra, with the highest security clearance (rare for a first generation born American back then) but that is about it.

I'm interested in the history of the Block Island. The first Block Island was sunk by a U-boat in the Atlantic. My grandfather was on the Block Island and survived. There was a second Block Island in the Pacific. It participated in the battle of Leyte Gulf. Any help would be appreciated.

I've only read the third/final volume of the trilogy and found it to be an excellent account, can't say much about the first two books though.

Not sure if this is any interest but a short account here on the Navy Flight Nurses who helped treat and air evacuate between 6th - 21st March 1945, 2393 Marines and Sailors from Iwo Jima.
Hope these are a help.
