Geevee | 3811 comments Hi Liz, adding to the other recommendations you could see if you could get a copy of this: The Lions of Iwo Jima The Story of Combat Team 28 and the Bloodiest Battle in Marine Corps History by Fred Haynes The Lions of Iwo Jima: The Story of Combat Team 28 and the Bloodiest Battle in Marine Corps History by Fred Haynes

Not sure if this is any interest but a short account here on the Navy Flight Nurses who helped treat and air evacuate between 6th - 21st March 1945, 2393 Marines and Sailors from Iwo Jima.

First Navy Flight Nurse on a Pacific Battlefield by Gill Dewitt First Navy Flight Nurse on a Pacific Battlefield by Gill Dewitt

Hope these are a help.

Jenn Ravey (thepickygirl) | 22 comments I posted a couple of years ago re: books on the Pacific War and got some great recs. I've been down the rabbit hole since then and have mostly used the excellent included bibliographies to find additional books.

But I'm back, after mention of the Dolittle Raid in my most-recent raid. Anyone have a good book about this? Much thanks.

I would definitely recommend these two:

Target Tokyo Jimmy Doolittle and the Raid That Avenged Pearl Harbor by James M. Scott Target Tokyo: Jimmy Doolittle and the Raid That Avenged Pearl Harbor

I Could Never Be So Lucky Again by James Doolittle I Could Never Be So Lucky Again

Jenn, I'll second Marc's rec on Target Tokyo: Jimmy Doolittle and the Raid That Avenged Pearl Harbor

It's probably the best book on the subject I've ever read. It just might become the go-to-book on the subject. I gave it 5 stars on GR.
I Could Never Be So Lucky Again is also very good.

Leigh (wellsmith) | 147 comments Just wondering if anyone had any suggestion for books on the Battle of the Coral Sea?

message 1117: by Lee (new)

Lee | 237 comments Re: Coral Sea

I'm a fan of John Lundstrom's works, so I'll point to
The First South Pacific Campaign: Pacific Fleet Strategy, December 1941-June 1942, which is about the strategy that put both sides on the path to the battle.

Black Shoe Carrier Admiral: Frank Jack Fletcher at Coral Seas, Midway, and Guadalcanal is a biography of the sometimes-maligned US commander in that battle.

The First Team: Pacific Naval Air Combat from Pearl Harbor to Midway, which is a very detailed look at the USN's fighter squadrons through Midway.

The Barrier and the Javelin: Japanese and Allied Pacific Strategies, February to June 1942 is also a strategic-background work.

That's what I can think of quickly.

Marc | 1748 comments Leigh wrote: "Just wondering if anyone had any suggestion for books on the Battle of the Coral Sea?"

On top of Lee's suggestions, there are also these:

Blue Skies and Blood by Edwin P. Hoyt Blue Skies and Blood

Queen Of The Flat Tops The U.S.S. Lexington And The Coral Sea Battle by Stanley Johnston Queen Of The Flat Tops: The U.S.S. Lexington And The Coral Sea Battle

The Battle for Hell's Island How a Small Band of Carrier Dive-Bombers Helped Save Guadalcanal by Stephen L. Moore The Battle for Hell's Island: How a Small Band of Carrier Dive-Bombers Helped Save Guadalcanal

The latter two aren't exclusively about the Battle of the Coral Sea, but they contain lots of information about the Lexington's part in the battle.

I also read Queen of the Flat Tops in high school and found it very interesting. I own a copy and have recently been planning to re-read it actually. If I find any others I will post them.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments To be honest Kosie I'm not too sure that the Germans run many, if any, sea convoys, maybe in the Baltic Sea? There are some members here who are keen naval enthusiasts and they might know something more.

Any suggestions or ideas folks to help Kosie with his question?

Thanks Aussie Rick, I only ask because I read in the Coastal Convoys that the Allies started attacking German convoys on the French coast when the tide started turning in the West.

carl theaker | 1560 comments Kosie, this book details British torpedo boat attacks on German convoys. It was published in 1945, the author was writing it as the war went on, so there are some goods and bads to that, not having the post war research on events, but he was there ! An interesting angle is that he also often gives the German propaganda that was broadcast about a particular fight.

That had been the case of most of the women whom Mundy interviewed. Their families had been unaware of their wartime service. It would be interesting to know what your grandmother-in-law thinks of Mundy's book. I feel sure Mundy mentions the restrictions on disclosure being lifted.
