Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 192 comments Over decades I have read a lot of espionage, code breaking and the like. Almost all from the allied POV and mostly WW II, mostly ETO. I did find one title about the history of German Signals Intel. Of course a little about the Abwehr and Adm Canaris.

Anyone have some titles to recommend?

Looking for more on the German effort and almost anything on the Japanese.

Italian or Chinese might be cool.
Need not be too academic or technical, but almost anything may be of interest.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Hi Phrodrick,

A very interesting subject and one that I've not read much on, however, I have read this book on the Abwehr which you might enjoy:

German Military Intelligence in World War II The Abwehr by Lauran Paine German Military Intelligence in World War II: The Abwehr by Lauran Paine

message 1053: by Nishant (new)

Nishant Pappireddi (rootofunity) This is not a book, but Vincent O'Hara has an excellent article calles "The Other Ultra: Signal Intelligence and the Battle to Supply Rommel’s Attack toward Suez," on Italian codebreaking and signal intelligence and how it often canceled out the effect of Ultra.

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog | 192 comments First: Thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate you two taking the time to help. Under the excuse that I am new to GR and this community I just saw this topic:
LAND, AIR & SEA > Intelligence Operations & Units During WW2

I had thought I had a solid library on this topic. Just the first two pages has dozens of titles new to me. Several relating to my request.

I am not sure I have enough years/eyes or bank account to afford being too active in this community,

It is at once humbling and gratifying to know how much you guys have read and are willing to share.

You might want to peruse the other topics after you've won the lottery...

I'm glad you found that thread on the subject and discovered a few good books on your area of interest. I actually should have provided you with a link to that page, so sorry about that :)

I've got this book on the Pathfinders but I have not had the chance to read it yet:

Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments For Luftwaffe night fighter pilots, killing the Pathfinder was the ultimate objective, even in lieu of getting multiple bomber kills. Some of my interviews with German pilots who scored kills over these point men are quite telling.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments From Deborah:

Hi everyone ! I am looking for a recommendation for the Battle of Stalingrad. Any suggestions would be appreciated . Hope I put this in the right thread , if not sorry

Recommendations????

message 1073: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments A classic account and very easy to read book is this title:

Enemy at the Gates The Battle for Stalingrad by William Craig Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad by William Craig

message 1074: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Another very good account is Antony Beevor's book on Stalingrad:

Stalingrad The Fateful Siege, 1942–1943 by Antony Beevor Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege, 1942–1943 by Antony Beevor

message 1075: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments And if you are really keen and want some very in-depth and serious reading there is David Glantz's four volume set on the battle or his abridged edition:

Stalingrad by David M Glantz Stalingrad by David M Glantz

message 1076: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1748 comments I'm writing this with my phone so I can't include the book covers and such, but here's a few more I'd recommend:

Stalingrad by Jochen Hellbeck
Stalingrad by Michael K. Jones
Voices From Stalingrad by Jonathan Bastable

message 1077: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments All good recommendations Marc along with this last one which is more a collection of various theme's in relation to Stalingrad:

I've heard good things about this book MR9 but I have not read it or even seen a copy so it may require some further research to see if it is what your looking for:

Jan Smuts - Unafraid of Greatness by Richard Steyn (no cover) Jan Smuts - Unafraid of Greatness by Richard Steyn

message 1080: by Colin (new)

Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments When writing my book Four War Boer, and having some first person insights from Pieter Krueler who knew Smuts, I spent years doing additional research. I have the following book: "The South Africans with General Smuts in German East Africa: 1916" from battery Press (1939 reprint). Good campaign book. Smuts also wrote his own autobiography which is considered a good read, I liked it.

There's also this one about P-38 ace Gerald Johnson:

I'd really like to hear your recommendations on any book that really details the battle of Iwo Jima, particularly the role of Easy Co., 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Div. I need info especially from Feb. 19th on and also what took place AFTER the flag was raised. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
