Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments I just started reading the series right before the HBO show started last year. I had heard about it for a while but never dove in but once I knew the series was being filmed I went for it. I wanted to read before watching.

I just finished Clash of Kings a few weeks ago before Season 2 premiered on HBO.

I was wondering if there is anyone like me that is late to the reading party and might be starting the 3rd book here soon or just did. If so maybe can have some discussions as we go.

I am afraid to look and join in these existing threads for fear of spoiling things. Yet I would like to discuss as I haven't had that chance through first 2 books.

I haven't really made good social use of this site yet and thought this might be good way to start.

Mach | 198 comments I have already read all the books. The other threads are full av spoilers so it's smart of you to avoid them until you finish the remaining books.

I know how you feel, about the spoilers. Some people suck at spoiler alerts, they just give it all away without thinking. I still have AFFC and ADWD to read, and I'm scared to look at some of the discussions in this group. I had SO MUCH spoiled for me about ASOS before I read it, it sucks balls.

But you are in for a hell of a ride with ASOS, it's by far the best one of the series (I've read so far).

Btw, have you checked out the website Towerofthehand.com? Theres is a really cool guy, who kinda "blogs" about the chapters as he goes through them. I really enjoyed reading his thoughts after each chapter, as I went through the book. He's also good at seeing connections between events that are easy to miss. And he cant spoil anything, because he is reading the book for the first time. If you go to "Books and chapters", click on ASOS, and you'll find something kalled "Jeff's reads ASOS" or something.

Bailey | 57 comments If you haven't finished the books definitely don't go through ANY of the threads on here. You'll be spoiled for sure. But unless I'm wrong this group doesn't hold to spoiler alerts?

But really don't go anywhere near the threads if you don't want to be spoiled.

(And you don't - trust me.)

Lance: ASOS really is the best book of the series hands down. So much happens and it's definitely the most exciting of the five. Also your heart will be completely ripped from your chest at least four times while reading. So have fun with that!

Idunsses: Please don't get spoiled for those last two books PLEASE. One of my favorite moments in the whole series happens in AFFC and for that to be spoiled for you would honestly be the worst feeling in the world. And ADWD is crazy too!

Don't worry, I'm being super careful! But its so nice to hear something positive about AFFC, I've just heard that its shit. Thats why I'm taking a break from the series right now, ASOS was so awesome, I need some time to lower my expectations.

And another thing to Lance: stay away as much as possible from the IMDB-discussion board for the HBO-series. Its a freaking minefield, even in the titles of the threads, spoiler alerts are rare. Somehow people have decided THAT is the right place to have book-discussions. Morons.

Bailey | 57 comments Idunsses wrote: "Bailey wrote: "Idunsses: Please don't get spoiled for those last two books PLEASE. One of my favorite moments in the whole series happens in AFFC and for that to be spoiled for you would honestly b..."

Oh it's definitely not my favorite. It does have its moments though! The Sansa in it is fantastic, and some of the Cersei is really interesting as well. It is a slow read, though. You definitely won't race through it like with ASOS.

But, as I'm a major fan of one certain character, that moment I was talking about almost makes up for every mistake of the entire series. Almost.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments I read a Storm of Swords already but I wouldn't mind discussing it.

Ibrahim (ibrahimx39) | 3 comments I am on the same boat as you, I read the Game of Thrones pretty much around the same time as the tv show started, but I actually never new about it, so you can get my surprise about it, and after that I started on the Clash of kings. Right now i have like 4 other books to read before i start on a Storm of Swords. I find that I am alright with my pace and i like to you can watch the series to get like a refresher course on the second book. But i do feel that the series is progressing quicker than i think, (ie. Brienne being introduced) so i am a bit skeptical, and worried if something from a storm of swords happens during season 2.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments Brienne was introduced in Clash of Kings. I don't think they would jump ahead that quickly.

Debbie (httpgoodreadscomdebilooskadoo) I've read it also but wouldn't mind discussing either!!

Bailey | 57 comments Zack: There are actually a few developments planed for the second season of the show that didn't appear until ASOS in the actual text. But they might be changing some details completely so whether or not you've read it in the books already may not make a difference? Idk just throwing that out there.

And also I'd love to discuss any of the books! Even just through ACOK. There's enough in that book alone to to fuel some pretty great discussions.

Weenie I finished ASOS recently for the 3rd time and it's my favourite (so far).

I can just imagine the shock/horror when people see some of the deaths on the HBO series!

Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments Idunsses - thanks for that site recommendation. I know I miss some connections as I read for sure :)

There is so dang much and I can't always have the best attention span.

I have heard that ASOS is the best book according to most fans and so anxious to get going but am taking a bit longer break and reading something lighter here before starting up.

Also I am glad to hear Book 4 has some positive as I know it got panned bad by most.

I have heard that HBO is going to speed up to some ASOS storylines especially around Jaime since they felt that audience wouldn't handle him staying imprisoned all season like in the book.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments Oh I would be able to handle it just fine :)

Caitlin (caden_cotard) Lance this is my situation exactly! I finished a Clash of Kings the day Season 2 started. After hearing that ASOS stuff has been included in Season 2 I'm anxious to finish it soon.

I would LOVE to have a book club or discussions on this book and moving into future books. I'm afraid to discuss it with people who are done the series because I had some major stuff spoiled for me in earlier books.

I am also terrified of reading any of the threads in this group. In fact, I was even hesitating opening this one, but I am very glad I did!

Ibrahim (ibrahimx39) | 3 comments You guys make me want to start on ASOS soon!!!

Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments Caitlin,

Have you started on ASOS yet? As I mentioned I am reading a breather book before starting that one haha right now but am anxious to start.

Like you I would love to have someone to talk things over as I read books 3-5 and get current finally.

Caitlin (caden_cotard) I haven't either! marked it as reading on my profile because I read the first chapter, but had to take a mental break too. read a few comedy books and now a science one!

I'm hoping to start in earnest next week. Especially before before the TV season jumps too much further (considering how far they advanced arya's story this week alone i'm scared!)

I hope you don't mind I added you as a friend in case this thread gets buried. when were you planning to start the book?

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments I'm starting it tomorrow.... Can I come back tomorrow.
I'll have read at least 100 pages or so by tomorrow night!

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1113 comments wow, someone is eager.

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments Wait I got confused I just finished SOS! I'm starting, FOC tomorrow, I can't keep them straight because I'm just reading my face orrfff lately!

Haha, know the feeling! The last half of the books are always a marathon for me! Can't... put.... it... down!!

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments Whenever I post on these threads I try NOT to spoil it for anyone reading what I've already read.
And when I read the threads if I see something, I might not be able to recognize or remember, I gloss right over it.
I don't want to spoil it for myself either.

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments Idunsses..... I had to read the last 8 chapters like 3 times.... Just to make sure I got everything straight. No wonder Lysa is ( see above ) such at nut bag, after everything that has happened to her, YIKES!! And on my home page I wrote that when I'm NOT reading I feel like I'm cheating on everyone in the book! Help me?.......how do I return to my real life, or do I even HAVE one?

message 25: by Jeri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jeri Paull Me me me! I'm about a third of the way through ASOS! Finding some of the chapters tedious, but everyone assures me I should not skip (but I might skim) because some important things happen in the lesser character's chapters...

message 26: by Mach (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mach | 198 comments Don't skim ;D

Maggie (lacr1mation) Mach is right. Don't do that. You will miss a lot!

Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments Sorry guys I was away from internet access for a bit and I have started it now. I am 25% of way through according to my Kindle.
Never know how pages convert but shows on page 235 out of 973.

Just finished a Catelyn chapter which I think was her 3rd of this book so far. This book is moving faster for me than the previous 2 but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that I am used to his writing style and way more invested in the characters as the story goes along.

Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments Welcome Jeri!

I am 1/4 through and only found one a bit tedious so far. I am afraid I am going to fast and am wanting to savor it but is hard to slow down once get going lol

Nothing has shocked me yet but I am sure the blown away moments are second half of book :)

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments Im into ASOS about page 770, and I agree Lance, I feel like I'm stuck in a snowball wrapped in bailing wire rolling down a 90 degree hill gathering more speed and snow, but I didn't get that feeling till about page 400!
( note my sad play on words ) Winter is coommminnngggg!!!

message 31: by Jeri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jeri Paull *SPOILERS AHEAD* Ok, so Dany just opened a can of whoopass on some slavers. This was the first chapter of hers that I really enjoyed since Khal Drogo died. Tyrion and Sansa??? The poor girl just cannot catch a break, but at least she is married to someone who will be kind to her. I'm not skipping or skimming, and it seems to be picking up speed...

Caitlin (caden_cotard) Just finished!! What an action packed book! a friend told me it had a shocking part, but there were about 5-6 shocking parts if you ask me!

Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments I am 60% of way through now and it is nonstop at this point and just had the biggest event happen though not all that shocking to me given this story.

As I have read so much of this I really think the HBO show will continue to stray further from the orginal books but we will see. Also don't see how given it will take several more years to do tv how they can handle Arya and the kids when in real life they will be growing like crazy.

Caitlin (caden_cotard) apparently hbo wants to further draw this out and is going to make a storm of swords into two seasons. it makes sense for length but arya is going to be 21 by the time they finish!

Caitlin (caden_cotard) BTW have you found this site yet? http://towerofthehand.com/

It eliminates spoilers because you select how much information you know (from the books read and the seasons you have watched) so you can look things up spoiler free!

Its been a good help for some of the lesser characters that pop up. i got into some trouble with spoilers previously googling someones name.

message 36: by Jeri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jeri Paull Just hit the big event, and boo, and BOO! I was spoiled from lurking on the Television Without Pity Book vs Series boards, but it was still a shock. It would be lovely if the HBO series diverged at this point:)

I just started ASOS and have really enjoyed it so far. I am also watching the shows as I read and don't mind it too much. Sometimes I know it ruins the books, but I am far enough ahead that I haven't been bothered.

Me too. Storm of Swords is a bit easier to traverse than its predecessors... I think the journey through Westeros gets a little easier each time.

Alicia Lance wrote: "I am 60% of way through now and it is nonstop at this point and just had the biggest event happen though not all that shocking to me given this story.

I am right where you are with the smoking event and can't find anyone to ask about why they think it happened .. have you finished the book at this point? I am eager but have been busy and can't imagine how the story will continue

Lance (cooglh) | 8 comments I just finished ASOS finally and wow all kinds of things happened in this one and the story keeps growing branches that I just hope George has a plan how to pull together with some kind of reasonable ending.

This whole Epilogue story and the Brotherhood is out there but I will wait and see how it fits into the end game.

I can handle some of the magical and mysterious stuff but it is odd that outside of the dragons being born there was none in Book 1 and now more and more is being added on as we go so far.

Eyehavenofilter | 764 comments I'm loving this series, even though I'm so late to the party! Thanks for letting me contribute, and be a part of this.
