The more I fill with glee
And the more the glee
The more I'm a merrier me
It's embarrassing!

I wonder if anyone read this who hadn't read the first? I did read both but I feel it would very well stand being read alone.
Best bits? Well, I have to say the part set in Hull struck home because I could imagine it happening!
I also loved the bit with the stuffed animals. I have always felt stuffed animals to be creepy but this must have been something else.
Oh, and the bit where Ward lands on the castle roof in adverse winds!

That was an attempt to do something with the zombie theme that I hadn't actually seen anyone do before. It probably has been, but I hadn't read it.

And I have read the first book so I can't answer your question

Even better when I read it the second time after reading the first, of course.
Again, I was amazed at Darren's ability to describe a place and make me feel as though I've been there. Darren taps into my imagination perfectly to make me see the characters and places without making me feel spoon fed.
Oh yeah. Sometimes he makes me chortle a bit too.

There was the hedge animals in The Shining, but that's not quite the same.

What did you think of Ward's relationship with the Director of U.N.D.E.A.D. Did it come across to you that he dislikes authority, even if he wants to like the person?
