Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Is it the season of goodwill that has left our group with everyone happy and nothing to rant about? Or was it because this thread had dropped down the list a little?

message 202: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 2 comments I've had rants, but I couldn't remember which group had the "rant" section! (That's a rant in itself!) My poor family usually bears the brunt of my daily (yes, daily) rants about one thing or another.

Reading the above rants about reviews reminds me of one of my recent rants. I was reading reviews on Amazon for a pre-civil war Southern romance. The book had oodles of 5 star reviews except for the one that complained that there was slavery on plantations depicted in the book. Yes, slavery was bad, but when you read a Southern romance where the hero owns a plantation next to the heroine's plantation, what do you really expect?! Of course there is going to be slavery in the book! Sheesh! All I could think was, "That poor author."

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments No Internet over Christmas break?

NO WAY!

That would mean talking to the family.

How was your Christmas other than that?

Emily V (xemilyx) | 687 comments Mod
It was alright but it barely felt like Xmas for some reason this year.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments Probably 'cos you couldn't get any emails from Santa.

Get any new books?

I started on The Hunger Games the other day...! The names of the characters are a bit daft, but it's getting interesting now.

And before you ask, no I ain't ever reading the Twilight books.

I wouldn't recommend Twilight to you haha. Though the Hunger Games are an awesome read.

I got loads of books for Christmas, too many to list. Did you get anything interesting?

message 208: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments I got some computer games, a USB snowman, and a selection of God-awful jumpers.

USB snowman? That sounds utterly ridiculous and totally awesome!

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 189 comments Bought my BF a book about making paper aeroplanes, amongst other things. He is a happy soul.

message 211: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments I would love to receive a book about making paper aeroplanes!

Even though I'd be far too cack-handed to actually build one, just the thought of it is fantastic.

Did anyone used to read those Rupert the Bear comics annuals? They always had an origami recipe/design in the middle of them. I would sit there in awe of them, completely unable to get any further than the fifth diagram.

message 212: by L (new)

L Rant...my 20 year old computer is slowing down. I don't think its got long left and i am VERY concerned.

NO email, NO goodReads, NO constant diversion...unthinkable!!!

message 213: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments Yeah, I can't function if I don't have at least five different things to distract me at once.

If it is just slowing down, it is probably either loaded up with malware, or it has a hard disk that is getting full. Both of these can be fixed pretty easily and cheaply. Don't despair! Good luck with it.

L Thank you J.D.

I am sorting through everything that is saved on the computer, to see if deleting a few large documents may help.

...PROBLEM is that 'Microsoft Word' keeps freezing - when it freezes nothing on the screen works at all!

message 216: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments Lucinda, what version of Windows do you have and what version of Word/Office?

There is a file that is notorious for getting corrupted, and deleting it might fix the issue.

message 217: by L (new)

L Microsoft windows XP, version 2002

Microsoft Word 2002

message 218: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments Okay, you need to close down Word and browse to the following location.

C:\Documents and Settings\Lucinda\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

You should see a file there called Normal.dot - right-click it, and rename it so that there is a number 2 at the end. You may get a message pop up saying that you are changing the file extension, but just click Yes/OK/Whatever.

That's it.

That file holds various settings, so you may need to setup some of your toolbars again. Bear in mind that you've only renamed it, so you can always reverse the process if needed.

Word will look for that file, see it isn't there (because it's now been named to something else) and will just create a brand new one.

If you can't see the folders I mentioned, you may need to turn on the option to show hidden files, and also system files. That's in something like Tools > Folder Options, and there are two settings that need to be ticked/unticked.

message 219: by L (new)

L Thank you Michael, although not sure where i find 'Documents & settings' to continue??

message 220: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments If you open My Computer and double-click on C: you should see the Documents and Settings folder.

message 221: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) I'm confused - did I fall into the IT helpdesk thread? ;)

I'm quite happy today - although I am about to log off to do some 'work' work at home, so maybe I should be ranting about that?

message 222: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 189 comments Have you tried dropbox? it is online and the stuff is stored online but it is secure as you need to log in to access it from the internet. Your computer stores a local version and then when you connect to the internet it updates the stored copy. Means you can access it via internet so if you are not on your own computer or have to get a new one it is there. Also if your hard drive dies you havent lost it, or maybe only a day.

You can share folders, so if you are working on something jointly you can both access it. Obviously the other person can only see what is in the shared and their own files.
The basic package is free and is certainly large enough to store word files. You can buy more allowance and if you sign any one else up you get extra free. Might be a way to move some of the large documents you don't need but don't want to delete.

It is great, was only £4 as well from the book man at work.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Make-Paper-Pl... Amazon say it is £9.95.

L Michael wrote: "If you open My Computer and double-click on C: you should see the Documents and Settings folder."

Followed instructions until folder named 'AppData' but then nothing - there is nothing called 'Microsoft or templates' and i am stumped.

...apologies Melanie, i am really useless with computers! x

message 225: by Michael (new)

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 372 comments You may need to turn on the option to show hidden files, and also system files.

Do Tools > Folder Options > View. Then select the 'Show hidden files and folders' option, and untick the 'Hide protected operating system files'.

Click Ok and you should be able to see the folder.

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) @Lucinda :) don't worry about it - I just find it mildly funny that the 'Rant' thread which you'd expect to be full of angst and fuming people has become the nice corner where everyone gets help - very cute really x

Cheryl (goodreadscomcherylbdale) | 43 comments I'll rant! The Weather Channel no longer has weather when I go looking for it! Instead, there are all these reality shows about great storms through the years, or Coast Guard Rescue, or some other stuff I have no interest in.

Sad to have to use the computer to get local weather.

There. Rant over.
