Self Challenge - Kath's 2012 Books - The final stats are in

I really enjoyed this book Jud,I read it pre-Kindle and it was quite expensive if my memory serves me right.

but my spreadsheet is telling me that i am currently reading my 99th book of the year...
i think i will spend a while today thinking about what to read for my 100th - i have known it is looming for a bit now and have been totally flummoxed about what to read for it. i have enough on my voucher for it to be a new read rather than one off my tbr and am also willing to go above my usual price limit as it is a "special read"

For my 100th, I decided to read The Pariah by Graham Masterton - basically cos it was the first "adult" book I ever read when I was bout 15 and I have never read it since. Thought that would be kinda poetic.
Not started it yet - been busy with other stuff. Hope to start tomorrow though...

i havent updated this in time
i am up to 176 books now this year and as i have now moved onto a spreadsheet it isnt as easy as cut n pasting them here...
what i am going to do is work out how much i actually paid for each book and how much the normal price would be (for the library books, sale books and the freebie kindle ones) and see how that compares... i think that might be interesting...

i thought of it when i was looking at the price of some of the kindle books that i have been borrowing from the elibrary and most of them have been about a fiver and i have borrowed 17 so far this year! So that plus all the freebies and sale books should have saved me a pretty penny compared with retail price. Of course in the days before Kindle I would have gone "charity shop" so wouldnt have paid full-up retail price anyway on most books, but just as a comparison!

i realise it is not going to be an exact science but if/when i share the results i will list any assumptions and stuff...
i also realise that "saved" is not strictly speaking true for the "discount stores" and "charity shop" reasons already mentioned...

172 ebooks read this year (including short stories)
total cost to me £87.26
total cost IF i was buying them on AZ today £387.93
"saving" of £300.67
that said, of the £87.26, £72.96 of that is in vouchers that I didn't even pay for - either earned from ValuedOpinions or given to me.
so actual cash spend for reading all them books is £14.30
so either i am a tight git - or very shrewd...
interestingly enough 6 of the paid books have gone down in price since i bought them and I couldnt find current prices for 6 of them and so i left them at 0.00 and 4 of them are currently reduced to 0.00 so i dont know what their full price would be if they had one

just to add for any aggrieved authors who may bimble here that before kindle i bought 95% of my books from charity shops, book exchanges, pubs and stolen off me mum and none of yous got a bean from it. at least these days, you get something from me!

total spent since got kindle: £361.98
total left unread: £170.76
which actually blows all my savings out of the water and shows that i mostly read free books before paid for books which in a round about way means that indie authors rock !
i really should extend the numbers to include all books, but i wasnt so hot at keeping track of what i read last year.

I've spent nothing as I buy from Phil's account but he says Kindle has saved a fortune as used to purchase several books a week, mostly from supermarkets( when doing wekly shop) also from charity shops and boot sales but I did have a bit of a 'thing' about books being in pristine condition. Phil reckons biggest boon is not having to build book shelves!

i'd just like to ram these numbers down the throats of all the people who moan about the prices of ebooks cos even if i take out all the library books i have had (cos i realise not everyone has access to them and you have to read on tablet and not kindle) i have still read a considerable number of quality (imo) books for a very very reasonable outlay.
just shows what can happen when you open your mind up to indie authors!

But I do think that the world is catching on to this - albeit slowly...
I am up to 187 now and starting to think about what to read for magic number 200... never thought I'd read that many books in a year...

192 ebooks read this year (including short stories)
total cost to me £97.77
total cost IF i was buying them on AZ at their usual price £436.50
"saving" of £338.73
Still searching for that special 200th

And even if you spent on average £1 on a charity book, that would be a cost of £187 so far.
What is your favourite genre? Would you want something short and snappy or a big chunky one? Perhaps a classic or re-read your favourite book of the year.

Not bad suggestions there. I did a re-read for my 100th so it would be cheating doing that again. I also have to re-read Jon`s book for KUF but that won't count twice. I may just look at my paid for book spreadsheet and random number one i haven't read yet. Kinda leave it to fate...

It'll depend where your head is when you start it and if life interrupts while you're reading it and many other factors.
But that's all part of the joy.
Sadly, the books that I have spent the most money on haven't always been the best...

The one I paid the most for was a Terry Pratchett - which of course I enjoyed.
Most of the other books that I have paid for have been recommended by people on here - I know which people enjoy the same sort of books as I do so I know if they recommend something I would most probably also like that book.
I have sometimes looked at the recommendations on here and on Amazon - but since the Amazon one is based on what I have bought I am currently getting a lot of recommendations for books that I most certainly don't want to read (but nieces are only 18 once thankfully ;) )

6 x crime (3 gritty, 3 cosy)
1 x biography (if the library gives it up in time)
the expensive books on my paid for spreadsheet are all omnibus books so that won't work and also i would like it to be one of "our" authors if at all possible as my 100th was mainstream!

i'll make a short list in a bit
our lights have just come back on so i will have to do some work for a bit catch up from yesterday!

i'll tell you the 5 authors though -
marc, lexie, darren h, steve r & linda gillard
although, all that said, anything can change between now and then so...

but if you want to - go for it - see if it matches what i kinda have in mind - although i cant confirm or deny lol

Terrific saving too.I am often amazed when I go back to a book how much the price has risen since I downloaded it,especially the ones I paid 20pfor.

little update: i sacked off one of the books on my list as it was too hard work and i wasn't enjoying it but the library came through on my sport biography. the library also has a couple more Alan Hunter - Gently books available which I have waitlisted so one of them may come through in time to replace the sacked off one!
but... then something happened at the weekend and it became clear to me what i need to read for my 200th. sadly for people here it isn't one of our authors, it isn't an indie, it's not fiction and i am reading it as a dtb. paid proper spends for it new too! but it is something i have been toying with reading for a while and, as i said, things conspired with me at the weekend and i know it is the right time now for me to read it...

You are allowed to read DTB's still, we will only glare at you for a short time before accepting you back into the fold. At least you paid money for it, that eases the pain a little ;o)
Hope you enjoy it :o)

i actually had an inkling that a book would choose me rather than me it!
oh and for the record, the dtb was MORE EXPENSIVE than the kindle book but it is one that i wanted physical rather than electronic and also new rather than used.
you'll understand better (and be more forgiving of my heinous crime) when i have read it and can tell you what it is!
