Jane Higginson | 165 comments Ive just been listening to the sword and laser podcast episode 91 (doing some catching up) tom and veronica had a discussion of whether star wars is sci-fi or science/fantasy, Id never thought about this before, I had always thought of star wars as sci-fi because it was also labelled/advertised as that, but tom made some good points as to it being more of a fantasy world in space
what do you all think ? sci-fi or science/fantasy?

Gordon McLeod (mcleodg) | 348 comments Definitely science fantasy in my book. Science fiction is traditionally defined as fiction about or significantly involving science. Star Wars is unconcerned with science; it's all about world building, character archetypes, and grand mythology. It's fantasy dressed up in the superficial trappings of science fiction. You could change all of those trappings and the story would be unaffected.
