The idea for the Lincoln Vampire hunter story came to the author as he was browsing in a local bookshop.
"I live nearby, so I often come here for an hour to pull things off the shelves, see what’s on the tables, check what people are buying. About 18 months ago, when we were leading up to the 2009 bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of his birth, I kept noticing that every bookstore I walked into had a big Lincoln table, full of books about him.
'Now, it so happened that this was also the point where the Twilight phenomenon was reaching critical mass. So next to every Lincoln table there would be a vampire table. Lincoln table, vampire table. Vampire table, Lincoln table…’ All he had to do was combine ‘these two great flavours".

The primary reason I responded to your post, is because I had asked myself a similar question when I first decided to read the book. I simply thought I'd share the interview. I'm often intrigued by what inspires and motivates an author to commit to do the necessary research and devote the time. When I stumbled upon the interview,I discovered his decision was probably driven more by the market place and what was selling rather than Abe Lincoln in particular. Actually, I was fully prepared to be disappointed in the book as I'm not a big reader of similar fiction...and was a little surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, the movie didn't stay true to the book in so many ways, but other than that it was really good. The acting was great, the fighting scenes were amazing ( Walker is quite handy with that axe of his lol). I think Bakmambetov and Burton did theyr job nicely. Well... Now we can proudly announce: YES! THE MOVIE WAS EPIC!

Thanks for your input Andrew. I sort of thought this would come across well in film, and its nice to hear that it did indeed. While one hopes that their favorite scenes and such are not left on the cutting room floor, I can usually live with the secondary story line that sometimes evolves in a screenplay.
How do you feel the film was received by others who also attended ?

Did they keep "judge us not equally, abraham"? in the movie? that was one of my favourite lines for more than one reason

Loved the story,
Loved the premise,
Loved it all!
The movie will be EPIC because Mr. Burton and Mr. Bekmambetov are geniuses!!!

it was definitely a good movie.
but a good adaptation? ha.
they didn't even come CLOSE. like.... at all. in any way. whatsoever. Completely different in every way, shape and form. Even the way characters meet, die, even the way people turn into vampires!!!!! aaaahhhh!!!!!
lol
anyways, it was a good movie. yes. I liked it.
but it did anger me some.
And here's the thing... It was a well done film. It was well put together, and I think the fact that it was SOOO different from the book, made me like it more than I would have if it was only a little different from the book. Because they were almost two completely different things, you can't compare them. Like apples and oranges. So I was not mad throughout the movie. I did not think to myself: "that's wrong." "that's different" throughout the movie.
but then...
but then the ending came.... and I was mad.
argh. I am mad about the ending. It's fine that the rest of it was different, but the ending!!! the ending was just.... argh, is all I can say. Argh, I say!!!

please tell me what part "judge us not equally, Abraham" was said in... because I sure didn't hear it. :(

After the first 10 minutes, when I realized the movie wasn't going to be true to the book at all, I just let it go, sat back, and enjoyed the film!

Good move, it works a lot better that way.

i know right?! it only took 10 minutes for anyone to figure out that they butchered the book. it was really such a big disappointment to those who had taken time to read and actually enjoyed the book....:(

i totally agree with you, the ending was one part of it that i was really anticipating.. they did no justice to it:(

I think we all agree, it should have been much better. In my opinion instead of using the book, the mainstream modified what they thought they should do.

The actor who played Lincoln kept reminding me of a young Lian Neeson....which didn't help the movie's story line.
I love the Character of Henry in the movie, he made it worth sitting through this adaptation!
I also saw that the author also wrote the screen play.
there is really little touch that Burton added so was disappointed, yes its dark and what was up with the vampire horses? really?
I would give the move a 3/5 stars - entertaining at times but very empty and the end was horrible!

I felt exactly the same way! I was impressed with the movie, but more impressed with the book. The movie took too many liberties with the story line, completely altering some of, what I thought, should have been key scenes.

Book read like a autobiography and appeared to me reali really enjoyed the book and im gonna read sense and sensibiliy and zombies nextwonder how the plays out
Alsp loved refetences to shakespear in the book feel like i learned alot about abraham lincoln jis dad was a righr loooser
Yes i liked jope the movie font spoil the book to much

Completely agree! And the ending of the book was so much better because of the reference to Martin Luther King Jr. I also highly enjoyed the "photoographs" from the book. That's not to say that the movie was not good because it was it was just a different adaptation, I liked the train scene the most!

I mean, it was a good enough read, but I didn't really find it all that interesting... *hides under sheet waiting for deluge of criticism*
