Cyn Am I the only one that wasn't impressed with the book? I didn't really understand why it was about Lincoln, when it could have been about anyone at the time period. I, for one, would have loved to see someone on the front lines fighting vampires!
I mean, it was a good enough read, but I didn't really find it all that interesting... *hides under sheet waiting for deluge of criticism*

The idea for the Lincoln Vampire hunter story came to the author as he was browsing in a local bookshop.
"I live nearby, so I often come here for an hour to pull things off the shelves, see what’s on the tables, check what people are buying. About 18 months ago, when we were leading up to the 2009 bicentennial, the 200th anniversary of his birth, I kept noticing that every bookstore I walked into had a big Lincoln table, full of books about him.
'Now, it so happened that this was also the point where the Twilight phenomenon was reaching critical mass. So next to every Lincoln table there would be a vampire table. Lincoln table, vampire table. Vampire table, Lincoln table…’ All he had to do was combine ‘these two great flavours".

Cyn I didn't exactly mean literally, although I didn't know that, so thanks. It's just I felt the book to be a bit hollow because there seemed to be something lacking from its protagonist. I finished it and thought "i kinda wish that had been about someone else...."

The primary reason I responded to your post, is because I had asked myself a similar question when I first decided to read the book. I simply thought I'd share the interview. I'm often intrigued by what inspires and motivates an author to commit to do the necessary research and devote the time. When I stumbled upon the interview,I discovered his decision was probably driven more by the market place and what was selling rather than Abe Lincoln in particular. Actually, I was fully prepared to be disappointed in the book as I'm not a big reader of similar fiction...and was a little surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did.

Clay Morgan I teach college history so people expect me to call fire and brimstone down on Seth Grahame-Smith for messing with Abe Lincoln like this. Yeah right! It's actually amazing how much research he does before adding horror twists to popular history. LOVE the book. Can't wait for the movie.

message 56: by Nat (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nat I feel like if the movie doesn't stay true to the book, it will still be a good movie. I would love it if it stayed true to the book, but if it doesn't, I have a feeling, it's just going to be an awesome movie. ha

Yeah, you're absolutely right, the movie didn't stay true to the book in so many ways, but other than that it was really good. The acting was great, the fighting scenes were amazing ( Walker is quite handy with that axe of his lol). I think Bakmambetov and Burton did theyr job nicely. Well... Now we can proudly announce: YES! THE MOVIE WAS EPIC!

message 58: by Ed (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ed Baswell GREAT book, a lot of fun. I loved the shopped pictures to add to the legend. Looking forward to the movie.

Andrew Smith I really enjoyed the book and had the pleasure of watching the movie last night as a preview. I was impressed with both the book and the movie but some may not like the movie as well, since it does not follow the book. (My opinion). In my opinion the quote by Henry "that some men are just too interesting to die" is a crux to the movie, yet it was left out completely. Still, and in all fairness, if you watch the movie as a standalone entity it was a spectacle to be sure!

Thanks for your input Andrew. I sort of thought this would come across well in film, and its nice to hear that it did indeed. While one hopes that their favorite scenes and such are not left on the cutting room floor, I can usually live with the secondary story line that sometimes evolves in a screenplay.
How do you feel the film was received by others who also attended ?

Andrew Smith The audiance was small since it was a private preview, but everyone who had not read the book liked it alot, those that had read the book thought the movie was good as well but had a lot to talk about.

Did they keep "judge us not equally, abraham"? in the movie? that was one of my favourite lines for more than one reason

message 63: by Andrew (last edited Jun 21, 2012 08:38PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Andrew Smith Yes, and there are several other lines that were kept, if you can set aside some of the book, you will enjoy the movie greatly. If not, I expect you will enjoy it.

message 64: by Lena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lena Nguyen Are you kidding me? This book was freaking awesome! Some parts were so absurd I just HAD to go and show it to my US History teacher! I just hope the movie will be able to portray the epicness of this book! There's only so much you can cram into a movie, you know? But I have high hopes that this will be a great movie!

Denise Loved the book,
Loved the story,
Loved the premise,
Loved it all!
The movie will be EPIC because Mr. Burton and Mr. Bekmambetov are geniuses!!!

Nat Just got back from seeing it.
it was definitely a good movie.
but a good adaptation? ha.
they didn't even come CLOSE. like.... at all. in any way. whatsoever. Completely different in every way, shape and form. Even the way characters meet, die, even the way people turn into vampires!!!!! aaaahhhh!!!!!
lol
anyways, it was a good movie. yes. I liked it.
but it did anger me some.
And here's the thing... It was a well done film. It was well put together, and I think the fact that it was SOOO different from the book, made me like it more than I would have if it was only a little different from the book. Because they were almost two completely different things, you can't compare them. Like apples and oranges. So I was not mad throughout the movie. I did not think to myself: "that's wrong." "that's different" throughout the movie.
but then...
but then the ending came.... and I was mad.
argh. I am mad about the ending. It's fine that the rest of it was different, but the ending!!! the ending was just.... argh, is all I can say. Argh, I say!!!

please tell me what part "judge us not equally, Abraham" was said in... because I sure didn't hear it. :(

Ernest Gonzales the movie was horrible. disappointment :(

message 69: by Ed (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ed Baswell Saw the movie yesterday. Like Andrew said, if you can set aside the book, you'll enjoy the movie a lot more. If you expect a level of fidelity to the book that you get from "Game of Thrones" or "Lord of the Rings," then you'll be disappointed.

After the first 10 minutes, when I realized the movie wasn't going to be true to the book at all, I just let it go, sat back, and enjoyed the film!

Andrew Smith Ed wrote: "Saw the movie yesterday. Like Andrew said, if you can set aside the book, you'll enjoy the movie a lot more. If you expect a level of fidelity to the book that you get from "Game of Thrones" or "..."

Good move, it works a lot better that way.

Galileia Ed wrote: "Saw the movie yesterday. Like Andrew said, if you can set aside the book, you'll enjoy the movie a lot more. If you expect a level of fidelity to the book that you get from "Game of Thrones" or "..."

i know right?! it only took 10 minutes for anyone to figure out that they butchered the book. it was really such a big disappointment to those who had taken time to read and actually enjoyed the book....:(

i totally agree with you, the ending was one part of it that i was really anticipating.. they did no justice to it:(

I think we all agree, it should have been much better. In my opinion instead of using the book, the mainstream modified what they thought they should do.

Denise Movie was not epic! I saw it last night and it left me wanting....the book was epic! some of the CGI was the worst I have ever seen....

The actor who played Lincoln kept reminding me of a young Lian Neeson....which didn't help the movie's story line.
I love the Character of Henry in the movie, he made it worth sitting through this adaptation!
I also saw that the author also wrote the screen play.
there is really little touch that Burton added so was disappointed, yes its dark and what was up with the vampire horses? really?
I would give the move a 3/5 stars - entertaining at times but very empty and the end was horrible!

I felt exactly the same way! I was impressed with the movie, but more impressed with the book. The movie took too many liberties with the story line, completely altering some of, what I thought, should have been key scenes.

Jenna we voted in our book group on facebook to read this couple months back and i thought it was horrible alot of others in the group didnt like it either, but with that said the movie looked like it would be better

Kalob The book was awesome...I saw the movie the other day...it wasn't very good. They cut a lot out (they had to of course or it would be really long) so that's a setback. Also the special effects were so bad. I don't know what it is with new movies, but they're special effects are so bad, mmmkay. I'd give the book 5 stars and the movie 2 (it would be only 1 but they cast the girl who played Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim as Mary, anyone else catch that?).

Andrew Smith Mary was also Royal Pain from Sky High. I actually like her in most of what she does.

Verity Brown I'm actually very proud of the author for being smart enough to recognize that what works on the page is not the same as what works on the screen (he DID write the screenplay himself). People who insist on absolute fidelity between a book and a movie are going to be peeved at this movie. But I think the only way to even remotely capture the flavor of the book on film would have been a mockumentary in the style of Ken Burns, and nobody would go to a movie theater for that. The movie takes the "faux serious biography" of the book, revamps it completely as a fantasy novel, and then converts the result to a story that works as a movie. I enjoyed both the book and the movie, but they are very different from each other.

message 83: by Eva (new) - rated it 5 stars

Eva Hamrick Awesome book hits it alright!! I've read on Lincoln since I moved to Grafton, West Virginia (and the civil war) and except for the vampire part it is as close as it's going to get.

Library!!

Corrie When I went to buy the book at the bookstore I remember the guy that sold it to me. He said he said lincoln was his least favorite president because he was so boring but he said after reading the book he became his favorite presiden. I have also been facinated by lincoln and this bookd made it all the better. I really enjoyed the book but I will not be going to see the movie. I find myself comparing the two and then I don't enjoy the movie.

Completely agree! And the ending of the book was so much better because of the reference to Martin Luther King Jr. I also highly enjoyed the "photoographs" from the book. That's not to say that the movie was not good because it was it was just a different adaptation, I liked the train scene the most!
