Steve Does anyone know how to move a book from the "Currently Reading" list to the "Read" List? I'd have thought putting the date completed on the book would move it automatically, but that's apparently too obvious.

I'm considering just have one consolidated list for everything past and present because Goodreads simply can't seem to make the site user-friendly. :(

Of course that would be more logical than changing it manually, but changing it is not hard. Click on your currently-reading shelf. The book covers will be the first column, followed by a series of columns for title, author, avg rating, etc. In the column "Shelves," underneath where it says "currently reading," it says "[edit]." If you click on that, it displays a list of your shelves and you can click the dot for the shelf to which you want to move the book.

Thanks.

Tracey (stewartry) | 6 comments I may end up eating my words when I get to a computer where I can actually see my books - but I believe if you use the tool on the "Currently Reading" box on your homepage, Goodreads will move the book from "currently reading" to "read". If you click on "update status" a new field opens up; this lets you say what page number you're on (or, for audio or Kindle, what percentage you're up to), leave a comment, and/or click on "I'm finished". When you do that it adds the book to your challenge total, if you're participating, and shifts it to "read". Otherwise I don't believe the system will ever automatically change your shelf.

Seconding what Lenore and Tracey have said. Two methods to move books from "currently reading" to "read". From the official help page: http://www.goodreads.com/help#i%27m_f...

Just setting a new date read doesn't do it as you could presumably have read the book before and moved it into "currently reading" as a reread book.

If you've got suggestions for improvements on the usability of the site, I'd say check out the User Feedback group: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...

Steve Thanks for that info.

Just go in with a flak jacket, and DON'T ask for half stars in the ratings system, no matter how much you'd like them. :)

Advice from a feedback veteran, I take it?

Now I kind of want to go through and read the responses to the feedback on half stars. If it's been asked for that many times, I wonder why we don't have them. Except I don't think I've ever seen a star rating system that allowed for them.

Tracey (stewartry) | 6 comments There's a small clique on the Librarians' group and the Feedback group who are either a) stunningly bad at expressing their actual intent online or simply b) stunningly rude. (Not the moderators or powers-that-be; they're more non-responsive than mean.) Or maybe I just caught them on a bad day. Several bad days.

I think last time I looked they stickied a half-star thread in a vain effort to head such madness off at the pass. The PTB's claim that it's a programming issue – that it would be a major project to change over; the clique is outraged that anyone would want to change the rating system because, and I near-as-possible quote, it would be "a burden" to go back and redo all the books they've rated. The conversation tends to get ridiculously ugly, shockingly fast.

That's guaranteed to keep me out! One of the things I like about THIS group is the ambiance of politeness and good fellowship, even in disagreement. I get all the aggression I need in my professional life -- I don't need any in my leisure.

Rotten Tomatoes web site allows for 1/2 stars in their rating system....just move the cursor to color a portion of the star and it is accepted.

I find myself giving five stars when 4.5 stars would be closer to my opinion... And in some cases, 1/2 star would be more appropriate than 1 star! :o(
