Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Hi everyone!

After polling the group to see who'd be up for a group reading challenge there are plenty of people who'd like to take part. :)

In the interests of being 'original' we are running a 2012 Reading Olympics challenge, inspired by the sporting event taking place in London this summer.

Challenge rules are simple: place a shelf in your My Books named '2012 Reading Olympics Challenge' to track your progress and you can add any books you wish to qualify for an event there. We will be listing in this folder the description for each 'book event' that qualifies for inclusion - from sprints to high jump there will be strenuous reading activities for everyone! So take a look and see what books you think you can enter for each event - the more the merrier, or just a couple for fun - whatever you feel like.

Wooh! My shelf is made

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Should also have said - you can include re-reads, books for other challenges, stuff read prior to April 2012 etc. in here - only requirement for qualification is that you read the book in 2012 and add it to your '2012 Reading Olympics Challenge' shelf.

So - you're good to go - now check out the events your books can be in...

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) My shelf is up too now - I think I can have a good go at most events, but doubt I'll have the 'stamina' to try the marathon.

There will be Goodie Bags for our 'reader athletes' - I'm just sorting out the prizes now - all competitors submitting five events or more will be entered into the draw. And there will be an additional prize for the Marathon, anyone completing this event will be entered into the exclusive draw for that.

Sound good? Well get signed up then :)

Kirsten (kielianne) Can we change (as we go along) what books we use for each event or do we have to stick with the ones we first declare?

message 6: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Sure - chop and change as much as you like - you just need to pop the ones that you finally do read on your Olympic shelf for us to work out who qualifies for the prize draws at the end of the year. We'll probably ask everyone who plays along to confirm in December what they read for each event during the year in and will then sort out the draw from that

Karina Kantas Can an author add their own books if they are suitable for the event :)

message 8: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) As in read your own books, or put them somewhere for people to think about reading them? We could add a shelf to the group one for this event where we put the books people are reading? Would that work?

message 9: by Karina (new)

Karina Kantas Well I wouldn't over promote. Just to add one of my own titles if I thought it was suitable.

So far I've added books I own and have read. :)

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Hi guys - have finally been able to create a challenge tracker for the olympics, which should help with adding up your various events. You can add your existing shelves and take it from there :)

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) We've got a good clutch of Olympians registered now, which is great!

don't forget you can 'shelve' books for this challenge you've read so far in 2012, so you might already be halfway there :) if you want to join, just sign up for anything from 1 to 85 books!

Melanie Cusick-Jones (melc-j) Well done to everyone who took part in this - whether you made it one event or the whole l-o-n-g marathon :)

I got to 32 of my planned 40 challenge books - not perfect, but I'm happy with that many. How did you do?
