The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments It still struck me as demeaning tho! Poor Raf.

message 102: by Betelgeuze (new)

Betelgeuze | 158 comments I like the earlier Anita Blake novels. But i dislike Anita in the later novels. She has imo become increasingly whiny and hypocritical. She has multiple sex-partners and lovers, but does not allow Jean-Claude the same. She even has problems with Jean Claude being with Asher, altough she appears to make some progress in that regard. Anita's hang ups about sex get in the way of plot development. I do admier Anita's loyalty to her friends and loved ones, and what she is willing to do to protect them, but that is imo her only redeeming quality. I read the Anita Blake Books more for the other characters especially Jean-Claude and Asher, not for Richard though, he's even worse than Anita. Skin Trade was the most disappointing in the series. Ms. Hamilton spend several books building up the Marmee Noir plot line, only to have it end in an utterly unsatisfying way.

I prefer the Merry Gentry series to the later Anita Blake books, because unlike Anita, Merry accepts who and what she is, and uses her powers without feeling disgusted with herself. Merry at least understands that there is nothing wrong with having sex with someone you're not in love with. She rejoices in being able to give the Sidhe back some of what they've lost through sex. She is more cautious with using her deadlier powers, The hands of Flesh and Blood. Merry at least has her priorities in order. I also like the mythology in the series, especially the role of the Goddess and her Consort, a lot of UF/PNR is influenced by Christian mythology, it's nice to read books with a different perspective.

Courtney (alannarey) | 35 comments I really like her Anita Blake books, they are so different from the other paranormal vampire books that I find them quite enjoyable. Yeah she could cut down on the sex a little bit but you have to face it, it is part of how Anita lives.

I think that sometimes her male characters are a little too perfect, like Micah, but I really like him for his common sense. Jean-Claude is my favorite though, hes just there, whenever she needs him and always knows how to deal with a situation, which is kinda weird to say, considering his past history....

Anyway. I really like her storylines, but personally I think she needs to get back to sticking with whats happening to her life back at home rather than going off on an investigation, granted that was for Anita to grow, I still think she has bigger issues in St. Louis.

Anna (aknas22) | 349 comments I'm really looking forward to Bullet- it's set in St. Luis so everyone should be in. It also has the return of the Mother of Darkness. Should have known LKH wouldn't kill her off so easily. Chapter 1 is up on her website, at least part of it is.

message 107: by Anna (new)

Anna (aknas22) | 349 comments I'm a few chapters into Bullet and I'm really enjoying it. Anita's not as whiny in this one (at least not yet), I don't know whats up with Asher though. Actually I do. He was feeling left out. Richard is the biggest change though... I don't want to say anymore and give anything away.

message 108: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Oooh Anna, I'm so excited to read this! I want to ask you all kinds of questions but I'm stop myself.

Anna (aknas22) | 349 comments Carolyn-I'm glad I'm not the only one who was super exited to read it! Don't tempt me to spoil it. I'm not that far in but I do know that some excitement is coming.

message 110: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) I just finished Bullet and it was the best book in a long time. She balanced everything perfectly: sex, politics, relationships, magic. It was great.

message 111: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm really looking forward to reading it Kyle. Did you do a review yet?

message 112: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Wow, Kyle. Now I'm almost looking forward to it!

message 113: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) No I haven't done one yet but I'm posting one tonight.

Michelle: I know it took me by surprise to. Let me know what you think when you read it. If you don't like it I might have to re-read it to see what I was thinking since our reading taste is the same.

message 114: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments Lol. I might have to get it tomorrow. You've done the impossible, Kyle, and renewed my hope!

Maybe she found a reliable first reader/editor capable of catching and banishing all the crap we suffered through in the last books?

message 115: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments I don't think the editing could get much worse than in Flirt. So I have hope. I have the book on hold at the library, but I don't know when I'll actually be getting it.

message 116: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Borland (kgborland) I'm reluctant to review it because I'm worried when I do I'll remember things I didn't like about it. Right now I'm so excited that it wasn't another Flirt that I'm ecstatic about the book.

Flirt was just...well Michlle and me already talked at length about that atrocity.

Kyle Borland (kgborland) Review of Bullet is up. My mood towards the book completely changed which I figured it would when I reviewed it D:

I agree with Kyle about this one. I know some people have problem with the sex, but this time around it made sense with the story line.

message 119: by Jess (new)

Jess | 3721 comments For those of you who finished Bullet, I put up a spoilers thread in the New Release Folder in case you wanted to talk about it in more detail.

I'm still waiting for my copy!

message 120: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 1831 comments I just reserved it at the library. I'm still wary enough that I'm not willing to spend the money!

I just looked and I'm number 6, so probably another few weeks until I get it.

message 122: by Trace (new)

Trace (runetracey) I really enjoyed the first few books of the Anita Blake series. But when she started sleeping with various men in a book then it just got silly.
All soft porn - which wasnt even well written - and no other storyline
Im not a prude, but I do feel you need more than sex to sell a book. And Ive noticed her last few books seem to be getting much lower ratings on this site so other must feel the same as me
I stopped reading Anita Blake at book 14, and infact the last half decent book was probably book 11, but I just kept hoping for a miracle!

message 123: by Starling (new)

Starling | 176 comments Well I disagree about it being soft porn. And I disagree about there being no plot in the books. But they did change and they are different from what they were in the beginning.

I've walked away from other series because I lost interest in where they were going, so I get that too.

Different strokes for different folks.

message 124: by Myranda (new)

Myranda | 9 comments The Meredith Gentry novels are spectacular. I never could get into the Anita Blake novels, but I will try again. Merry is just a wonderful character, and it is great to see how she grows into such a courageous "half-breed" royal.

message 125: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I really enjoy that series too Myranda. It took me awhile to like the Anita Blake ones, I had to start reading 3 times before I could finish it but it's ended up being one my favorites.

sometimes it is just sex with no story, that's when I get annoyed with the book. I understand the concept of the Ardeur being the reason for the sex, but at times it is the book and there is no story to go along with it. The last book, Hit List, was different. She only had sex with 1 person, but the book was packed with story. I wish a balance would be made, sex with story and Jean Claude and the others would be in the book more then just a mention or two.

Star Fouse | 15 comments Ive only listened to the first 4 books in the Anita Blake series. I got busy with other series and kinda forgot about it. Looks like ill need to pick up where i left off and start up the series again!

message 129: by Ronatha (new)

Ronatha Hall (roangl27) | 55 comments I love Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake novels. I started them when I was young and I feel like I've evolved right along Anita. I'll admit the books have gotten raunchier but I love it. It's become part of the story. I also love how Anita's mentality about sex, monters, and everything else is reluctant to change. I can't wait for the next book.
