message 152: by Abi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Abi Triana Definitely! it's a really short read, but i couldn't put it down. You'll love it.

message 153: by Kailey (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kailey totally. it is one of the best books i've ever read. totally worth it

message 154: by Jeski (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jeski I remember reading this as a kid and loving it. As an adult I came across it and thought to myself 'No way is it that good now' because, hey, most books you enjoyed years ago you probably will have a different opinion of. But this book was still just as innovative and original today as it was then. I love it and would reccomend it anytime. ^_~

Katrina Passick Lumsden Definitely worth it. Even if you end up not liking it, it's not a long book. I thought it was fantastic. I don't remember when exactly I read it, but I was at least in my mid-twenties.

Definitely, I've seen that kind of ambiguous ending tried in other books, and it just turned out awful, but in The Giver, it works.

message 157: by soap (new) - rated it 2 stars

soap Nope. There's a sequel to it. This is the kind of book that you pity so much you want to give the sequel a try. Both suck. The book made no sense. I was confused the whole way through and I do not wish that on anyone who is easily confused with books (such as myself).

Weiting I guess but its a little bit confusing at the beginning, but it has a very nice ending and it has a very interesting topic. But I guess you should understand better because I read it in 3rd grade.

Christine RM wrote: "It is worth the read, but the end was, uhm, dumb.

But that's just my humble opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

Happy reading!"

It is #1 of a loose trilogy. Check out Gathering Blue (2000) and Messenger (2004). A fourth book titled Son is in preparation in 2012.

message 160: by Beth (new) - rated it 5 stars

Beth It is well worth the read. And the end is ... NOT the end. "The Giver" is the first in a trilogy. Follow it up with "Gathering Blue" and then read "The Messenger" to find out where it all leads.

message 161: by Kensie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kensie It's seriously one of my favorites. I read it for the first time in college and decided to write a dissertation-like paper on it. While it was initially written for a younger crowd, it's very complex and intense. I would definitely recommend it!

message 162: by Madeline (new)

Madeline READ IT!!!! ITS SOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!

message 163: by Ren (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ren Sarah wrote: "I have had this on my shelves for a while and have read that it's one of those dystopian books (for kids) that will make you think and is really good etc. I have so many books to read i'm wondering..."
This book is perfect regardless of your age. It will be interesting to contemplate how your life experiences as an adult can effect the meaning or interpretation of the book. Say in comparison to elementary school students, perceiving some of the metaphors as uninteresting, an adult perspective on these metaphors - or the theme of sacrifice throughout the novel - will be a valuable contribution to the text. Enjoy!

message 164: by Dani (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dani Well worth the read!

message 165: by Julia (new) - rated it 1 star

Julia i would have to say NO!!!! I read the first chapter and I DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL. I would have to say save yourself the trouble and don't read it!

message 166: by hannah (new) - rated it 5 stars

hannah It's amazing! Do read it! It totally makes you think, and the idea is super creative. If you do end up reading it and liking it, read Gathering Blue and The Messenger, as they're all interrelated (:

message 167: by AnYee (new) - rated it 3 stars

AnYee Lovegood It's good, but predictable for the genre. Other dystopia novels are much better. But if you like simple, almost matter-of-fact storytelling, it's for you.

Shay Shay My middle schoolers were reading it so I picked it up. I fell in right away. The Language Arts teacher and I had many conversations about the books themes and social implications for many weeks after I finished it. I found myself comparing it to many current social issues. I am older than you by a few years and really enjoyed it. It reads quickly.

Dolores Oh yes you definitely should read it!! It is one of my favorites.

message 170: by Ana (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ana Sarah wrote: "I have had this on my shelves for a while and have read that it's one of those dystopian books (for kids) that will make you think and is really good etc. I have so many books to read i'm wondering..."

100 percent worth to read, I am 12 and I am amazed by it, it brought mi mind to open for so many thoughts and ideas that had never crossed my mind ever. Its so deep and....diffirent...that it makes you wonder about the future and about how other peoples minds work.

message 171: by Bianca (new) - added it

Bianca I thought it was ok. But you might as well give it a try.

Rebecca I just read this book with my son. He was 9(now 10), and chose it for a fourth grade book report. I was so happy that I read it with him. My nephew(8th grade)and his class were reading it together at the same time. All three of us would talk about the book together. I loved it.

message 173: by Becky (new) - rated it 5 stars

Becky I read it when I was in 5th grade and just read it agen at the age of 27. I loved it both times and would recemend reading it. Its all ways been one of my favorits.

Kathleen Harsch Yes, it's original dystopian YA literature from one of the best YA authors around. I met her at a conference once, Lois Lowry is a wonderful person and told us how she came up with the ideas for another book she wrote called Gossamer. Both excellent, but very different books. I try to read this every year with my 7th graders.

message 175: by Idalis (new) - rated it 5 stars

Idalis Brimos I loved the book so much but is "Gathering Blue" the second part because the summary wasnt that good?

message 176: by Kelly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kelly If you love Dystopia then yes!

message 177: by Syl (new) - rated it 5 stars

Syl One of my absolute favorites. My son recommended it to me to read. I tell everyone to read it. Think of it long after you done

message 178: by Summer (new) - rated it 5 stars

Summer I just resently read this book and i'm impressed, I almost cried at one part of the book. A very worth-reading chrildren's dystopian. It makes you think.

message 179: by Noemi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Noemi very much worth reading.

message 180: by Aseel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aseel YES!!

message 181: by Ryan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ryan I would read I read it also. I would to agree some of the other goodreads readers who said the ending was dumb. It wasn't exactly dumb but very confusing and you have to decide what happend in the end.

message 182: by Ryan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ryan Sarah wrote: "Thanks for the thoughts. I'll give it 'the college try' which is 30 pages. if i'm not curious to what happens it will be given away. :)"

That is a really good idea i am going to use that.

Mikayla One of the best books I have ever read. Furthermore, proof that great conceptual material does not need ridiculously verbose language.

message 184: by A.J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

A.J. Martinez It is worth every page
It showed a world like no other I've seen.
I dont want to give away anything all I will say is that if you want to know of a perfect society read the giver. Highly recommend it.

message 185: by REDD (new) - rated it 5 stars

REDD YES....

message 186: by Idalis (new) - rated it 5 stars

Idalis Brimos I agree on that "Anderson"

Heather I am 32 and just read it with my 9 year old. She and I both loved it. It is well worth the read. The ending leaves alot to be desired but great until that point.

message 188: by Diane (new) - rated it 5 stars

Diane Luzar I read this the same time my 7th grade granddaughter was reading it for school. I think I got more out of it than she did. Very thought provoking, thinking about how the government could totally take over every aspect of our lives.
Some of the best books I've ever read, I didn't start liking until a third of the way through. What a waste it would have been if I'd only read 30 pages!!

message 189: by Steph (new) - rated it 4 stars

Steph Yes, and not only this one but all by Lois Lory

message 190: by Linda (new) - rated it 5 stars

Linda I'm 59 and I finally read it. I am a tutor and am currently using this book with a young Saudi girl improving her English. I had heard much about it from my neice (now in her 30s) when she read it in school so thought it might be something interesting. My Saudi student is fascinated by it and I had to read ahead of her to the end because I got so caught up in it. It is definitely worth reading. Maybe more than once.

message 191: by Haley (new) - rated it 5 stars

Haley I read it for the first time at 27. Now it's a favorite!

message 192: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg Kissam This book is really worth reading you should read it!

message 193: by Aidan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aidan Booklover I would say that it is worth the read. It is a very creatively written book, and I enjoyed it, but it is a bit confusing at the end. I also saw the play, and that helped me clear up any confusion. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am pretty sure anyone else is going to enjoy it as much, or even more, than I did.

message 194: by Karen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Karen yes !! ... i read this book at skool it was great .... its worth it

Laquita Brumfield It is more of a teen book. We use it in middle school where I work. I enjoy the story; however, I am into Children's literature.

message 196: by Aidan (new) - rated it 4 stars

Aidan Booklover I liked it, but it can be a bit confusing at times.

message 197: by Kate (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kate I absolutely loved this book. I have re-read it a dozen times since I first read it as a kid.

message 198: by Casey (new) - rated it 4 stars

Casey I guess it was okay, but I wouldn't recommend it.

message 199: by Kate (new) - rated it 5 stars

But you gave it 4 stars?
