Bullshit, Ryan thought. Sammy might think she'd given nothing away, but her reaction to his question told Ryan exactly where he needed to being searching for answers.
First stop, Ryan decided, was the internet. He'd find out all he could about Ms Samantha Talbert. Then he'd go on from there.
After an hour and a half of searching, he'd found nothing of significance, which was significant in itself. Sammy was well known and respected for her charitable work with recruiting and training pound dogs to help with the elderly, disabled and blind."Why is there nothing at all here, Ms. Talbert...?" he mumbled to himself.
Ryan noted the city where she lived and worked and decided to start there. It was only a few hours away and he could leave early in the morning and be back that evening.
By mid afternoon, Ryan had discovered that Samantha had not been to work in six weeks, she was a month behind in her rent, and she was wanted by the police for questioning. The police had her fingerprints at the scene of a murder in an abandon home in the slum district. The owner of a large Real Estate firm had been shot.
But Ryan wasn't finished. He questioned her associates, neighbors and friends. He didn't get much from them and had the feeling several of them knew more than they were willing to tell.
Looking at his watch, he remembered he had promised to visit Sam and Anya today and he wanted to stop by headquarters for an update. Funny how he now thought of Sam first and not Anya. He could not get that stunning blonde out of his mind.
He finished his conversation with Sammy's neighbor, Mrs. Garfield when he noticed the black SUV parked up the road. It was the same one he noticed earlier when he was interviewing Sammy's co-workers. Someone was following him.
Ryan got his car, and checked his rear view mirror. Taking a picture of the SUV's plates using his cell phone, Ryan then threw the car into gear and took off in the opposite direction.
After being sure he was no longer followed he pulled into the towering glass office building that housed headquarters. Iceman's door was open so he entered to find him pouring over his computer screen. "Ice? Any news for me?" Danger asked as Ice lifted his head.
"You're not going to like it."There was nothing to like about any of it, so why should this be any different?
"Go on," Ryan said.
"The flash drive was damaged and the card in the rock is missing. I have people out searching the murder scene for it now. The killer didn't know what was in the rock and thought it to be just a rock from the parking lot."
"But I do have some good news. We found some DNA on David and have sent it to be processed. But you know that takes time."
Time they didn't have. "I'll see if I can call in some favors," Ryan replied. "In the meantime, I'll be keeping a close eye on Anya and Sammy, so if you need me, that's where I'll be camping out."
"From what we could decipher on the drive, the real murderer is hunting Samantha. She witnessed the killing. She is in very real danger."
Ryan checked on the time that he would be able to bring Anya in to see David's body. It wasn't easy but he knew how much this meant to Anya. His next stop was Anya's house.
Sue, the girls mother had arrived and greeted him warmly. Anya had very red eyes but she accomplished a weak smile. Samantha seemed very edgy and was finding it hard to stand in one place.
It was quickly dicided that all the ladies would make the trip to the morgue which was fine with Ryan. It would make keeping an eye on Sammy much easier.
30 minutes later, Anya, holding Sue and Sammy's hands, and Ryan, entered the cold room where the coroner was waiting for them."Ryan," the old man said. "And you must be David's wife, Anya. He spoke of you often."
"Thank you so much for letting me come. I need some closure. I can not believe that I have lost him." Anya said to the elderly man.
"Anya," Ryan said, "This is James. He used to work with David and I years ago."James chuckled, "Troublemakers, the both of them!"
Sammy hung back with their mother and let Anya go forward to David's body. Guilt hit her hard. If only she had not taken her troubles to David then this scene would not have to be played.
She didn't have to look at him to know that Ryan was watching her. Did he know? Had he figured it out?
Ryan was thinking, "Thank God, the strike was to the back of the head. He looks like he is asleep and not damaged at all. God I miss him."
Anya hesitantly touched David's cheek with her fingertips, and closed her eyes. She tried to imagine him, not as he was lying there, but the last time she'd seen him. It was when he'd finished his shower and came back to the bed, kissing her lightly on the lips and whispering, "I love you, baby," before leaving for work.
There was so much Anya wanted to tell David and now she couldn't. Now the baby she carried wasn't going to have a father. She had found out about the baby just this morning.
Samantha looked at David and realized the finality of death. There was no sense playing the what if game. The killer must be brought to justice.
Ryan watched as a single tear made it's way down Anya's cheek. He wanted to wipe it away, to wipe it all away... her anger, her pain, these past days. But there was no turning back time, so he did the only thing he knew in that moment: he moved to Anya's side, wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her close.
After a brief moment, a huge sigh, and pure determination, Anya asked James to call her when the body was to be released. She handed him a card with her home and cell phone numbers. Taking her mother's and Sam's hand she turned and walked away. That was no longer her David.
Anya allowed Ryan to lead her out, her thoughts on Sammy and the way her sister had held herself apart ever since learning of David's death. She didn't have to be an agent to know that Sammy was hiding something."Ryan, take me home, please."
The ride home was done in silence. Ryan accompanied the women to the door. He hoped for an invitation inside but he would watch over them from his car if necessary.
"Certainly, If it is alright with Anya, why don't we go for a drive down along the lakeshore." asked Ryan.Once they were clear of the house, Sam reached into her pocket and pulled out a small disk. "Ryan, I think it is a tracking device, and I found it inside Thumpers collar."
"No, don't you see? The murderer saw me with the dog the day of the murder. Then the dog got away from me. I spent time looking for him and ended up in that shack. I saw the guy shoot the other guy and he saw me. He must have found my dog, put the tracker in the collar and took Thumper with him when he murdered David. You brought the tracker and Thumper right back to me. Now he knows where I am!"
Ryan stared, stunned. "Sammy, you know we can't talk in more than three sentences! Are you trying to get us killed?????"
Ryan combed his fingers through his hair and cast Sammy a sideways glance. Sighing, he said, "Sure, Sammy. Let's get you to a sketch artist."
"Anya and Mom may not be safe there. Maybe they should go back to Mom's house. Where will I go?" pondered Samantha.
Ryan thought for a moment and decided. "We'll send your mother and Anya for a well-deserved vacation and keep them out of harm's way. You will need to stay with me."
Sammy drew a deep breath. "What?? Stay with you?" Considering her long time attraction to Ryan, this wasn't good.
"Umm. Ah.Ryan I will be bringing Thumper also if you still want to have me..And only for a few days or so.. Thank you very much." Sam spoke hesitantly, looking anywhere but his eyes.
He couldn't miss the way she turned into herself, shying away. Was she hiding something unrelated to the case, maybe her feelings for him?
"Sam, it is too late today for the sketch artist, but first thing tomorrow. For now, let's go back and talk with Sue and Anya. You tell them as much as you feel comfortable doing, including your change of address." Ryan said turning the key in the ignition.
They arrived at Ryan's place and he let them in, closed the door and reset the alarm. Sammy had never been there before so when Ryan told her to wait by the door while he checked the house, she did as she was told.
Sammy watched Ryan move room by room and when he came back to her, he took her by the hand and led her to the kitchen."Have a seat while I make something to eat. Want a drink?"
"I need comforting so perhaps a hot chocolate? Ryan thank you for dropping that tracking device off at head quarters. It really worried me."
