Definitely prefer Lowood over Gateshead. Material comforts can not take away loneliness. It also held purpose. Direction and goals turn an existence into a life worth living.
Gateshead was just plain nasty! Lowood provides a base that Jane seems to use to her advantage as she has the ability to make the best out of any situation. She soaks in the education and fits into the almost military style precision of the days. I would not be able to handle EITHER! I enjoy being able to make my own choices and have the freedom to enjoy life my way :)
I think i would prefer Lowood Institute. In fact there would have been no competition. Though i am behind the rest of you (just having reached chapter 9), right now it seems like the kind of place i would simply love... well, minus the lack of food :( i do love my food.
