Cliche?? Chapter 12

Whilst reading the events in this chapter I thought to myself 'this is so cliche'. Man riding along on his horse -you could see how the events were going to unfold. This did get me thinking though. "Was this very book the beginning of such a cliche?". Any thoughts?

I haven't read any further as I am waiting to see where everyone is up to.

I think that because of all the restrictions of the time, people did not get to meet outside of a normal social situation. The rules as to who could talk to whom was very strict and so it would have been difficult as an author, to contrive a way that Jane could meet 'Mr Rochester' outside the normal conventional introduction. In the setting this was probably the only way they could meet with noone else involved.....

Good thinking Cheryl. I had not considered the social etiquette, classes etc of the time.

I was surprised she talked with him for so long. Jane said she would not have stayed if he were kind, but his roughness kept her there... I found that curious.

I thought that she felt it put her on equal footing with him. I took it to mean he wasn't neat and polished, a "fine" gentleman. She stated that if he were a handsome, heroic looking gentleman she wouldn't have even asked if he was ok in the first place. She must have felt he had no airs about himself.
