Chaz | 4 comments I'm on page 1, paragraph 1 and already Brooks has irked one of my biggest pet peeves. "First Annual" isn't a thing. Even if you think a repeat event next year is a lock, it's not annual until the second event. Inaugural is a perfectly good word.

Right, back to the book. Hopefully it improves and I won't have to read with pen in hand to write in corrections.

LOL your comment reminds me of all the grammar people who are mad at the new Guild video "It's 'I'm the one WHO'S cool!" haha.

It's funny, because you actually got her name wrong. :P It's Brook, not Brooks.

Ruchi (tetchimon) If page 1 annoys you, then the book is really going to piss you off later. Everything just went to hell halfway through the book for me.

Cupcakencorset | 10 comments I didn't know what to expect from a steampunk setting and was worried it would overwhelm the story with "authentic" details, but I was thrilled to be able to say: I loved this book! Not only was the writing pretty damned good, but also the characters were nuanced and multifaceted. As for the smut? HOT. There was great sexual tension and the actual sex scenes were really steamy. (pun intended) I'll be reading the sequels... but not immediately, as I'm reading the Parasol Protectorate book first.

Molly (mollyrichmer) Yeah, I've noticed a few grammatical errors in this book. Maybe it's more annoying to me because I'm an editor, but it always takes a book down a peg for me when there are consistent mistakes.

I gave up about halfway through. I couldn't do it any more. I just didn't care enough about the characters to keep going. And the Duke was pissing me off.

message 8: by Chaz (new)

Chaz | 4 comments The Duke is an arsehole. I'm still in it and it reads quite quickly so I will finish it but I won't read on in the series.

message 9: by Tara Tiger (new)

Tara Tiger (taratigerbrown) I think there should have been more info on the billy club.

message 10: by Molly (new)

Molly (mollyrichmer) Yes! A perfect tool for batting away handsy dukes! :)

The irony is that the next book has a NON alpha male and is really quite good. I shoulda picked that one but feel weird picking non-first in series! SO HARD!

message 12: by Tara Tiger (new)

Tara Tiger (taratigerbrown) The Iron Dick isn't so bad. When he said he wanted to shag her, he was really meaning he wanted to make sweet love to her.

Jessica (jlc161) | 29 comments I am going to have to start reading soulless. The Iron Duke is really lacking for me. First steampunk I have ever read and I really really like it but I think this particular story is just not for me.

I guess I'll pick up the second book then rather than moving straight on to read the Parasol Protectorate series! I loved the world the book was set in but I do have to agree with the spot on assessment Chaz made of Rhys! :)

message 16: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nbennett) | 13 comments I would be all OCD if you picked a book that wasn't the first in the series. I would pick up the first one and then read the one that you picked. So I like that you pick a first in a series.

Though it takes 3 weeks to get any good vaginal fantasy type book cause I am in a county that has a smaller library system and I have to request them to pull it from another library in the state.
