i really dont understand why this book is so popular. its writen badly, vague, undescriptive, short, rushed and just bad. the story is good ok, but you dont get a feel for it because of they way its writen.

if you feel the same, maybe we can come together in our hatred. if you disagree, please, enlighten me!

hmm I see your point, but I thought that the way it was written sort of added to the impact of the character and her story.

needless to say I rather enjoyed the book.

I totally agree the book is badly written and I did not get a fell for the characters or enjoy it at all.

i didn't enjoy the book at all :P to me, it was so detached i barely followed character arcs and plot.

I first read this book when I was, I don't know, young? At least 6 years ago, and I read it a year ago. When I was still young I loved this book, totally adored it. But when I read it again last year I thought it was "naaah okay" I guess it's your age too, that makes this book a little odd or not.

This book confused the heck out of me. Sure it was a nice and easy read, but still did not make a lot of sense to me. I was wondering if it was modern day when this was happening because she kept talking about emailing and texting. But the book had a world war two feel to it. The end however confused the heck out of me. Does she or does she not end up with her cousin. Which by the way is incest, kind of disturbing...

i agree with a lot of what your saying, especially with the "rushed". I mean, the whole story idea was really unique and awesome, and i like some of the thinks Meg Rosoff does in her writing, but i never got a good grasp on the story because to me it seemed so jumpy and fast-paced. i was never really "in the story", but felt detached from it

I liked the book, but then again I did only read it in Dutch

I agree. I just thought it was very scattered and undeveloped. It seemed like it was shocking for shocking's sake. I was, for lack of a better word, disturbed by the idea of two cousins falling in love.

I read this book when I was fairly young so I guess that my experience of 'good writing' was fairly poor but I remember feeling really touched by the story and so attached to the characters.

I read this book It was alright but the thing that pissed me off was so confusing!

i kinda of liked the style to it, but was also confused. The one thing that majorly bothered me was the cousin/cousin romance. I wouldn't really have a problem with it in theory, it's just not properly followed through. There really aren't any consequences to their incest. Everybody seems pretty okay with it. It's kind of awkwardly thrown together true love, and if you're not going to make a statement about that type of relationship, why bother? It's just a guy. It could have been a family friend or whatever. It's not explored enough. It's also clunkily written and way too vague, like the author wrote down her idea of the book, lost the book, and was trying to recite to you what she had written.

That's exactly how I felt. Was she just trying to be shocking or edgy with the cousin/cousin thing? I didn't really feel like the reason for the war was developed. Or anything for that matter. It felt like a weird dream that you don't really remember and can't describe once you wake up. Important things are left out, specific details--like when you retell a dream.

I read this book and thought that it was ok the story had a good flow to it but I did'nt like the love line it I mean cousins? Anyway the story ended so quickly that I did'nt have time to dijest what was really happening
