Janice (jamasc) *note to self* Reading clunkers will not get you caught up!

I'm reading The Stonor Eagles for my Scotland selection and it's taking me forever!

Sue Great idea for next time. I'm thinking that An Instance of the Fingerpost would have to be offset by many novellas and short books of poetry, me thinks.

message 56: by Sue (new)

Sue Gaeta1 wrote: "Are you having problems with Fingerpost?"

I haven't started it yet. I'm thinking of reading it this summer when I hope I'll have more time available (ha ha).

message 57: by Sue (new)

Sue Gaeta1 wrote: "Gaeta1 wrote: "Are you having problems with Fingerpost?"

It's actually a faster read than it looks, especiaaly since it is broken into sections. Novellas, if you will."

Good to know. Thanks. I know it's a very popular book.

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 50 comments I'm 14 books behind. I should be able to fix that soon, though. When I was coming home from my vacation, I stopped in a used bookstore and found a biography on the last Empress of China that I plan to read for China.

Yes, adjusting the number of books in our personal challenge is the easiest way to keep on track, since we can't extend the time allowed in the group challenge.
It looks as though several of us will be continuing this into next year: there are a lot of countries.

message 64: by Barbarac (new)

Barbarac (bcb72) | 191 comments I'm completely behind. I've always been a fast reader but the last few weeks I've had such hectic weekends sometimes I don't even get to crack open a book. But I think I can still catch up this summer, at the pool while the kids play in the water.

Exactly, they're are commercial breaks between novels.

I love the idea of adjusting the number of books and reading on into next year. This is a challenge I really want to enjoy, and I can't do that if I rush through books. I am so glad others feel the same way!

message 68: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (shiari) I just updated my challenge from 52 to 40 books. I want this to be fun!

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 60 comments I'm 3 books behind, and keep adding books to my AtW shelf so have about 90 on it and it's growing still. Anyway, I add to my list when I read a book so I can keep track of my travels. I'm not worried whether I manage 52 or not I'm just enjoying the trip

I too want to do a English county trek next year as a lot of the books I want to read are set in the British Isles! (whether I include Scotland, N. Ireland, etc or just stick to England I'm not sure but got a while to go yet)

I was thinking of doing the 50 states next year.

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 60 comments That sounds fun too! But being English I'll have to prioritise patriotically :-)

Sue Ah Chelsea, there will be challenges for years to come! Bless you for you courage and perseverance. Are you by any chance going to publish these lists here at GR?

I'm assuming that you'll be doing the states in Aus too? Otherwise your list will only have 2 on it. That being said, I live in the Australian Capital Territory which comprises of one city, so will happily keep an eye out for you for any local authors. Only one I can think of off the top of my head is my old English teacher,Geoff Page, but he's a poet.

Thanks for that info, Chelsea. I'll know where to look should i decide to wander around those various locales for reading purposes.

message 78: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 208 comments Just what I was thinking of doing myself Chelsea! I think I'll set one up for AU and see if I can find the others. If not, I'll start them. Or we could all work out who will set up what. :) I'm 4 behind for this one atm, but I'm reading Glue for Scotland and that it a heavy tome ... BTW this challenge is improving my geographic knowledge ... :)

message 79: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments I like the idea of an UK county trek. I am such an anglophile that I end up doing a ton of Brit Lit. But I'm having so much fun with the whole world that it is tough to prioritize!!!

message 80: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments There are 53/54/55 countries in Africa depending on which ones are recognized. We haven't designed a challenge, but my Africa group has been doing a Tour since 2008 in alphabetical order. We changed from a country per month to two months per country so we will be at this for years. We are currently in Kenya. This is one reason I am behind here...I "languish" in specific countries--this year it's the Middle East, certain African countries, and Japan.

message 81: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments Ooh, Marieke, that sounds great too. I'm definitely more into African lit now that I have been doing these worldwide challenges for a couple years. Will have to check that tour out....

message 82: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments It's fun, Beth. This year we also started a project for contemporary lit. The tour is country specific (so includes travel memoirs, journalism, European writing) and the contemporary lit project focuses on African writers but the subject matter doesn't matter (they can write about Africa or anything outside Africa). The group is called Great African Reads...sorry for not linking, I'm on my phone. :/

Mine too and especially history.

message 86: by Sue (last edited Jun 11, 2012 10:23PM) (new)

Sue And I'm finding I am enjoying my Chinese and Japanese selections far more than I ever would have thought. I think I'll be reading more in both areas in the future. I feel that I'm learning more about world history in general which is great. And I haven't read much at all of South America yet and only a little of African lit. What a wonderful world of literature.

message 87: by mussolet (new)

mussolet (sovotchka) | 115 comments I'm behind, because I'm leaving some of the books for winter, and am reading some Chick-Lit in summer.
It will be nice, reading about warmer countries, when it's cold outside :).

message 88: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments No kidding. And I need to quit my job and hire a nanny or there's no hope.

I like your idea, but I'm going to reverse it. Since I live in the desert I'm going to look for books that take place in snowy/icy parts of the world. Maybe it'll make the summer more bearable.

Sue Josey wrote: "I just started so i am real behind. i hope we keep this group going into next year and maybe the next after that."

I have a feeling that something like this will be going for a while. There are plenty more countries out there and people like me who set smaller goals (mine is 30). And it's fun and really opens up the reading world. There are other groups with variations on our theme too.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Josey, I've been working the country list since 2007 or '08. This group will be around for awhile.

Glad to hear it! I'm on #7 right now so I'm way behind but I'm really enjoying the travel. Right now I am in Iran listening to The Saffron Kitchen. I love how groups like this get me to read outside my normal genres. :)

message 94: by Chieko (new)

Chieko (cminnow) | 18 comments I am getting caught up thanks to the Quick Reads thread. Now only 6 books behind!

message 95: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) There is something wrong with the challenge report. Everytime I look at it, I'm behind another book. Sheesh!!

I hope to solve that problem quickly. Three of the books I'm currently reading will get that number moving in the other direction. I hope.

message 96: by Yrinsyde (new)

I was going to try to finish my last bunch by the end of this month, but I've decided to extend that to the end of 2012 because I have other books I'd like to read as well.
