Christie | 15 comments I've only read 5- I believe I'm 8 behind!! Anyone else struggling to keep up? Any tips on how to catch up?

message 2: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Huston (telynor) | 101 comments Yep, I'm behind too, but I am trying very hard to catch up. I've gotten bogged down on a couple of titles this year, which has really slowed down my reading pace.

message 3: by Sylvia (new)

Sylvia (sylviahartstra) I started later with 10 books, increased the number to 20 and I'm not behind using this number, but I sure would be if I had 52 books on my list.

@Rebecca - some books are tedious to read or have so much pages. I have a couple of those on my list too. I try to read at least 10 pages a days in those kind of books and then switch to more easy to read ones.

message 4: by Val (new)

Val I thought I might manage two books a month, definitely not one a week. There is not much point setting myself a challenge I know I won't meet. Even this cut down version of the challenge means I will be looking at some shorter books than I might otherwise have chosen.
The idea of reading more books from around the world is too interesting for me not to want to join in. Should there be a 'Backpackers' sub-category for those of us doing our world tour at a slower pace?

message 5: by Sue (new)

Sue Well, the whole idea of the challenge was to play by your own rules. I chose from the beginning to read 30 books, just an arbitrary number. So far I'm ahead of that goal. I didn't ever plan for the "52" as I knew it was simply too much and would add stress to a pleasurable activity. It's so much fun reading all these books from around the world.

Anyway, who knows, maybe there will be another challenge for next year!

message 6: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 130 comments I'm behind... terribly behind, hopefully I can make up for the time lost soon.

message 7: by Mikki (new)

Mikki What I've done is read many of my original choices, but then did not add them to the challenge because I didn't feel as if they really taught me anything about the culture, and I plan on reading alternatives. So, as for the actual reading completed, I'm fine. If I get stuck, then I'll put those few books back in so that my goal is met.

message 8: by Angela (new)

Angela | 70 comments I am 7 books behind. I am hoping to make up for it soon. I seem to be getting sidetracked or I read books not on the list. There are just so many interesting books. I am with Mikki. I tried to pick books that would give more insight into the culture or would teach me something I did not know. Anyway, I decided to make this a yearly challenge for me. It may not be 52 books but I want the books I read to allow me to explore the world. Of course, I have to throw in a few for fun.

message 9: by Sue (new)

Sue Yes Angela, combining learning and fun! Absolutely!

Lorifog Anyway, I decided to make this a yearly challenge for me. It may not be 52 books but I want the books I read to allow me to explore the world. Of course, I have to throw in a few for fun.

Exactly what I am doing so I don't really consider myself "behind". I'm just reading to expand my horizons a bit in between some other reading. When I reach 52 so be it. I know I will someday and for me that's enough of a challenge.

message 11: by Betty (new)

Betty I'm ahead by two or three books in the Goodreads 2012 challenge and lagging by two or three books in the 52 Around the World challenge. Quite a balancing act. Of course, the median of that is perfectly on target! :)

message 12: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (thesevagabondshoes) | 155 comments I thought that I'd meet the challenge of 52 with just a little stretch to get the longer books I've chosen in. but I've ended up moving house twice in the past two months so its unlikely that I'll get there. I also binned one of my selection for being so unreadable.

But I agree with Lorifog, I'm really reading to expand on what I would ususally chose and find some new authors/genres, so I'm not behind in that at all.

message 13: by Susan (new)

Susan | 83 comments I am way behind...I started late in a manner of speaking and have several other projects in the works. Several of the books I am reading at the moment are over 900 pages. Did start my list late as well. Not to concerned about it right now...I usually read more in the summer. Chose authors I had not read before and quite a bit of award winning literature so 52 books may end up being a stretch but after choosing some of the books am more interested in reading some new literature.

message 14: by Sue (new)

Sue Sounds like the real goal is being met by everyone...finding new authors, learning about new countries, etc.

message 15: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Sue wrote: "Sounds like the real goal is being met by everyone...finding new authors, learning about new countries, etc."

I agree! My goal is the 52, but I'll make changes to get the quality of content over quantity.

That's what my intentions are too. I found already a great many authors of which I want to read more.

message 17: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Yep, that's been my experience too, so I end up getting stuck in places for a while trying to dig a bit deeper into the culture.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm hoping to read the remaining, oh, 18 I think, on my world list by the end of July. I'm slightly behind because I've been reading books for countries I've already visited. But I started with a 190 book advantage!

Osho, do you know how many countries there are in the world, I don't, but you're quite a traveller. ;)

The list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_... gives UN member states and some disputes (includes generally agreed-upon states, such as Israel, and less-recognized states, such as Abkhazia). It doesn't include, say, Hong Kong. "193 member states and one observer state in the United Nations, and 13 other states."

Very helpful, Osho.

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue Well, I guess I can continue with this for a few years without repeating myself!

message 23: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendywoo) | 75 comments I've read 20 books so far this year, but not all of them count toward the 52 book challenge. My total goal for 2012 is 50 books, but I am counting audio books toward that total which helps me make a bigger dent in my stack. I'm a very undisciplined reader and tend to skip around to whatever topics sound interesting and/or what becomes available to me at the library. I figure the 52 books challenge will take me at least a couple of years to complete, but in the meantime, I will enjoy lots of really good books :-)I could make more progress if I could stop myself from getting bogged down in the UK every other book.

message 24: by mussolet (new)

mussolet (sovotchka) | 115 comments I'm behind ... I've read 20 books so for, but I've hit a bad phase where I've read basically nothing for six weeks :(. Usually I read like eight to ten books a month. I hope this month will get better and I will get back on track.

message 25: by Louise (new)

Louise | 120 comments I've set reading 30 of the 52 as my goal :-) So far I'm 1 book ahead.
Many of the books on my list are very serious, so I spice it up with some light reading on the side as well, (and just read what I want to :-)

We seem to have a similar plan, Louise.

message 27: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (shiari) I am 3 books behind, and my Kobo just broke so I might lag a bit further as the two books I was currently reading are on it.

I do have a couple others kicking around though, so I'll probably catch up -- eventually!

message 28: by Sue (new)

Sue I seem to have reached a difficult patch where all I want is the lighter fare! I guess I'll go with that to some degree. Don't want to put myself off of those good books waiting down the line.

message 29: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 17 comments I was feeling guilty, but thanks to you lot I now feel much better as I am only 3 behind and can see a way to catch up.
I got behind because I am not buying any books, only borrowing them from the library and I have had to wait a long time for a couple of books. I could have skipped ahead in my route but I want to stick with my list so I guess I'm paying the price for being so fixated with the reading order.

message 30: by Gussie (new)

Gussie (a_reader_1) | 68 comments Oh my God. Then, am I the "behindest" of the lot? :P I am 12 books away from being on track. Somehow, I keep getting distracted by books other than the one that I am reading.

Gayatri | 11 comments Navdeep wrote: "Oh my God. Then, am I the "behindest" of the lot? :P I am 12 books away from being on track. Somehow, I keep getting distracted by books other than the one that I am reading."

We are definitely in the same boat, Navdeep and that's 'The Black Pearl', obviously. In the spirit of Captain Sparrow and his arch-nemesis, the amazing Captain Barbossa, we've lost our way to find out where we really need to be!

Wendy (wendywoo) | 75 comments Navdeep wrote: "Oh my God. Then, am I the "behindest" of the lot? :P I am 12 books away from being on track. Somehow, I keep getting distracted by books other than the one that I am reading."

Dont feel bad Navdeep. I just went to check out my list and it somehow got deleted, so now I have to figure out how to reconstruct my list, which I think makes me officially in dead last place.

message 33: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) According to the challenge page, I'm behind by 2 books. I thought it was more than that.

My book club is reading The Sandalwood Tree which is set in India. I have What the Body Remembers: A Novel on my list for this challenge. I'm going to have to swap it out so that the books that I am reading are applied to the challenge whether or not I had intended them to be. Geesh, I hope that made sense.

What??? Oh, man, see if you can find all your books by going to the Master List.

message 36: by Sue (new)

Sue Unrelated question....is anyone getting discussion summaries or updates this week? I'm also getting very limited emails from Goodreads over the past day. Just wondering.

message 37: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments Hmmm I need to update my list but I haven't visited it in awhile. I wonder if it's still there? Yikes!

I totally failed at keeping a blog. :(

Mine have been a little wonky but I'm so busy I haven't worried about it.

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Lavoie | 23 comments I'm behind! I'm ahead in my goal for reading in general, but behind for my goal in this challenge. Mostly because I keep getting distracted by books that have authors in America or countries I've already read, and my challenge for myself was 52 DIFFERENT countries. Though I suppose I could count one for America and be a little less behind. LOL.

Mikki Sue wrote: "Unrelated question....is anyone getting discussion summaries or updates this week? I'm also getting very limited emails from Goodreads over the past day. Just wondering."

Few and the updates that I do receive are just a string of numbers.

message 41: by Lorifog (new)

Lorifog Has anyone thought of having a group read every so often so we can bump up our travels together? any thoughts?

message 42: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Lorifog,

There is a group read calendar listed under discussions which will list all of those that are scheduled. Did you have particular books in mind?

message 43: by Wendy (new)

Good idea Mikki! I will check out the master list. At this point, I'm just going to try to include as much of what I actually have read this year in my list, but that won't help all that much since all I ever seem to read is UK stuff. I need to figure out how many counties there are in England and do a 52 counties read or something. Maybe next year!

Could you recommend the book about Queen Elizabeth II. I like to know more about Great Britain's contemporary history.

Or maybe adjust the books? The list can easily be changed to include smaller works -- novellas, poetry. At the end, I think that my actual read list will look considerably different from my originally intended!

That's what I do regularly. Initially I picked large volumes or difficult-to-read books. Now I've added some YA, and Fairy Tales. It's nice to shift and amend your booklist.

Lorifog Mikki wrote: "Lorifog,

Oh thanks for the heads up Mikki! I'm going to go look now:)

message 48: by Sue (new)

Sue I'm changing my plan regularly now since my mood for reading seems to be changing daily lately. Then I look at my "52" list and see if there is something there that fills my current need, say for a mystery, some historical fiction, etc.

message 49: by Susan (new)

Susan | 83 comments I still do not have all of my book list entered. There appeared to be more researching what to read than actually reading taking place. Cable is usually on vacation mode over the summer so that will create quite a bit of reading time. Still hoping to do the 52 books for the challenge but can certainly appreciate the need for another year - there are just so many great works out there.

How are you all handling books that cover multiple countries? I am thinking of some of the Train books and such.

Was there a group read on The Poisonwood Bible already? I know there is a group read coming up soon for a Japanese book.

Yes there was a group read on The Poisonwood Bible. You can find the link under "group reads" a the group's main page.
