message 113: by Aimee (last edited Apr 03, 2011 02:44AM) (new)

Aimee Hi everyone
I'm Aimee and I'm from Auckland. I sort of read a variety of things, the only stuff I'm not into is crime, romance and chick lit (though to be fair I have read a couple of chick lits that I enjoyed).
Like most people my "to read" list is long and always being added to.. hehe.

message 114: by Chris (new)

Chris Strange (chrisstrange) | 1 comments Hi all. I thought I'd drop by and introduce myself. I'm Chris, originally from Tauranga and now a student at Auckland Uni. I'm also a writer.
I'm mainly into sci-fi and fantasy books, but I'll read pretty much anything if it sits in front of me long enough :)

message 115: by Becky (new)

Becky (moonserenity) | 1 comments Hi all.
I'm Becky. Nearly 19 in a couple days.
I live in the BOP

message 116: by Peter (new)

Peter Walton-Jones (peterwj) | 5 comments Hi to the group. I am Peter, I live in Taupo. I love reading and use the goodreads website to keep a record of what I have read and my thoughts about each book as I go. I do enjoy sci-fi and dystopic novels, but I try to read a broad range. I loved reading "1984", "Handmaids Tale", "Fahrenheit 451". Anyone else?

message 117: by Aimee (new)

Aimee I like a good dystopia too, have read all of those (Fahrenheit 451 quite recently actually) and probably liked Handmaid's Tale the best.
Have you read Brave New World? That's next on my list when I'm in the right kind of mood.

message 119: by Peter (new)

Peter Walton-Jones (peterwj) | 5 comments Hi Aimee ... Yes Brave New World is on my radar too. I'm sure the perfect moment to start is just around the corner...

message 121: by purplemagnolia (new)

purplemagnolia Kia ora koutou!

I'm a 23 year old teacher living in Wellington. I teach intermediate school, and actually came across this website while looking for an online programme that my students could use to keep track of their reading. While I'm not sure I'd get my students on here, it looked like the perfect thing for me!

I love books, especially biography and well written contemporary fiction. But I also enjoy reading non-fiction too.

message 122: by Laura (new)

Laura (dalbs) | 1 comments Hi everyone my name is Laura. I live in Wellington and work in Comms. I haven't been reading as much as I would like lately but I still love coming onto this site to get an idea of books to read. I will pretty much read anything.

message 123: by Angel (new)

Angel (ajlc_95) | 2 comments Hey people~ I seem to be the youngest here - I'm 15 and I live in Auckland. I don't have a real job yet, but I am a student librarian at school. :)
I do enjoy reading but I have to balance homework as well...
My friend introduced me to this site and so far, I think it is helpful. Not only can I keep track of what I'm reading and what I've read, I can also find other people's opinion about books and their recommendations. Awesomeness, indeed. :D

message 124: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool Hi Angel! I really wish Goodreads was around when I was at high school. How awesome it would be to have a record of everything I read back then, and especially what I thought of it. *envy*

message 125: by Greg (new)

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) Hi everyone, my name is Greg. I am a Goodreads author celebrating the release of my first novel The Spanish Helmet in New Zealand.
I am a Kiwi but now live in Switzerland where I work for a huge library.
I intend to run a giveaway for my novel just for New Zealanders, so keep your eyes open.

message 126: by Darkpool (new)

The Spanish Helmet by Greg Scowen"

Oh, thanks Darkpool. I wish I had thought of that. I figured people would go through my member profile if they wanted and didn't want to break any self-promotion rules.

The Spanish Helmet is available on Kindle and also as a paperback from Amazon.com and in NZ from my website gregscowen.com

message 129: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 42 comments Looks great! Excellent reviews. Bought it!

message 130: by Greg (new)

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) Thanks, Debbie. I hope it lives up to the reviews. As a co-mod of language and grammar, I will be interested to hear from you after you have finished.
I'm sure you will note the frightful misprint near the end of Chapter 7.

As an aside, it is nice to discover there are some Kindle owners in New Zealand.

message 131: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 42 comments I love my 'library-in-a-handbag'! Wouldn't be without it!

message 132: by Mark (last edited Jul 28, 2011 12:53PM) (new)

Mark (kyb3r) I'm a CompSci student in Cambridge (but not originally) expecting to finish next year. Also a musician, and an avid hiker.

I bought the book too, but I don't have a kindle. Have the reader for android so I'll read it from my phone :P

message 133: by Greg (new)

Greg Scowen (gregscowen) You can study CompSci in Cambridge? I assume you are talking about Cambridge, NZ.
I'm a programmer, actually, but I try not to let word get out. I work for a huge library now, so I just tell people that instead.

Even cooler to see that some users are taking advantage of the Android (and iPhone) Kindle apps. Are you using an Android tablet or phone?

message 134: by Mark (new)

Mark (kyb3r) I live in Cambridge, NZ but study at Waikato Uni. I'm Using the app on an HTC Desire, which seems to work really well. I'll get a kindle when I can afford to.

You might like to check out 22books.com for your students - simpler way to create lists, not the same level of social stuff as GR but I reckon would be easier for kids. Embeddable if you wanna show yr reading record on a student blog/eportfolio etc.

Cheers,
Miriam

Marita Hansen (maritaahansen) | 18 comments Kia ora. I'm a Kiwi author, currently living in Singapore (although I'm over for the Rugby World Cup, and will be back hopefully for good December next year). While in Singapore I wrote my book "Behind the Hood," which is set in South Auckland. It's the first in a series and is based on one of my old neighbourhoods, Clendon Park (in Manurewa).

In relation to my tastes in books, although I write gritty realism I also like to read crime, paranormal romance, and thrillers. Behind the Hood

Welcome to all the newbies. Great to see some expats on here as I was one when I started this group. Such a diverse group! Students, authors, and all the rest:-)

message 138: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Mitchell | 5 comments Hi, my name is Colleen. I am a Kiwi author, living in Levin.
Nice to see another Kiwi group on Goodreads.
I have just finished reading The Larnachs, set in Otago, and plan to read Behind the Hood, set in Auckland, next.
My time-travel adventure novel, Isabelle's Locket, is set in Foxton in 1910/2010.
It is available on TradeMe for $10 with free postage in NZ, and I plan to host a giveaway on Goodreads for it too.
Isabelle's Locket by Colleen Mitchell
I hope to be able to contribute to the group. My reading tastes lean towards historical fiction mainly, I'm more of a fan of adventure than romance, although a romantic thread to an adventure story is great. I don't like vampire or zombie books. Any book I read has to be fast-paced to hold my attention.
Lovely to meet you all.

message 139: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (sardonicprincessofcheerfulness) | 42 comments Hi Colleen....just finished Behind the Hood....excellent! I don't like vampire/zombie stuff either! Your book sounds interesting....available on Kindle?

message 140: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Mitchell | 5 comments Not yet. My publisher says they will do e-books one day. Hope they do.

message 141: by Jo (last edited Dec 07, 2011 12:36PM) (new)

Jo | 2 comments I am a writer. I am writing my first novel, as well as poetry, short stories, articles, book and movie reviews. I have a blog which I started in February where I give my general views on all the above as well as life in general:
https://jobryantnz.wordpress.com/

Recently I have started to renew my fascination with photography and have started learning about digital editing. I recently joined Goodreads. I love to read and there is nothing I won't attempt to read. I just finished reading The Gaia Wars by Kenneth G. Bennett. If you want to read my review: http://jobryantnz.wordpress.com/2011/...

Neisha (womanwithtwokids) | 4 comments Hi, Im a newby. I live in Dunedin, New Zealand.
I love to read fantasy, paranormal novels.
I have recently finished my first novel SACRIFICEThe story starts in Dunedin and then takes you into another realm.
It is great to see this group on Goodreads!

message 146: by Neisha (new)

Neisha (womanwithtwokids) | 4 comments Thanks for purchasing a copy, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
It took me about 6 months to write it, in between life with two young children. I would write when they were asleep in bed. It was something I really enjoyed doing.
Once again thanks and let me know what you think once you have finished.

message 147: by Julie (new)

Julie Scott (juliezbscott) | 2 comments Hi, I've just started getting into Goodreads and thought it would be nice to join a Kiwi group and get some local book recommendations. I'm a writer living in Auckland and have just had my first book published by Pear Jam Press.

message 148: by Julie (new)

Julie Scott (juliezbscott) | 2 comments Hi John,
It's a children's chapter book aimed at 7-10 year olds called 'Milly and the Chittens'. It's about a girl whose room is so messy that when her mother finally makes her clean it up, she discovers a trio of fantastic creatures living in it and what she has to do to persuade her mother to let her keep them.
Maybe more a book for messy kids than neat parents :-)
