Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
question
Why do the movie studios always have to alter the story?

Using the book as reference there is no need in altering or adding to the story. Most of the time when they add something new to the script it lessens the true message of the story. To me the main aspect of the book is Mr. Utterson's investigation and discovery.I wish just one time they'd try to make Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde into the mystery tale that it truly is. Do you agree?

The actual events of the narrative are simply too short to sustain a 90 minute movie. The best adaptions of this book generally use the concept as a jumping off point. It's called adaption for a reason.
The problem is that everyone knows that Dr.Jekyll is Mr. Hyde. There is no mystery anymore. So the movie studios feel they have to change it up and add new twists. It's not right, but there you have it.

in 1972 the British did a version in which Jekyll was turned into a female Hyde, and in 1994 America did the very same thing, but set it in modern day

Then there is the Incredable Hulk and the Thing, both comic book characters based upon the Jekyll and Hyde story.

I guess if you would truly try to adapt the book it would feel boring to the people watching it. I mean, I was already a tad bored while reading it. The perspective is unusual, I give you that, but for a movie it seems a bit out of place. In a movie you would like to follow Dr. Jekyll instead of his friends who are witnesses to the things happening. A movie from the perspective as in the book would probably be too confusing.
Hollywood believes it is their job to make the stars look good, thus they alter the story to make this happen. Hollywood also believes it is role of the star to create their own spin on the character, and not their job to bring the books character to life. Hollywood also believes that the role of the author is to create a platform for the star and thus let the star run with the role in any manner shape or form.
Truly do not remember the book or the movie, but I am not alone in thinking most books are better than the movies made based on them.
One of the reasons things change is due to not enough dialogue in a book ~ we can read what a character is thinking, but hard to translate thoughts to film.
