Unbelievable. You're a little high on yourself aren't you. Are you sure my puny little brain could handle your literary genius. Maybe that's why you haven't marketed to the public, everyone is just so intimidated by your brilliance.

message 56: by Bitchie (new)

Bitchie (matron) I think I'll take my puny little barnyard educated brain and read books that actually entertain me, and leave this "literary genius" type to people who can better appreciate it.

I love the "Dark Hunter Sries" and Daughter's love the "Nick Chronicles"... SK is amazing... Our family joke is we are Katagari Lions

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 538 comments I've been meaning to try the Nick Chronicles

Acquinnette the Amazon (willowyamazon) | 9 comments They are popular with the kids, especially this last one because "Dark Hunter Nick" shows up in this book.

Abby | 353 comments Wow.... This has gotten personal .... Since when do personal opinions warrant personal attacks? And we like Twilight... SO what? Just because we like a certain book, Twilight in this case, doesn't mean we have `puny brains" It doesn't make us any less intelligent then somebody that's read and likes the works of Shakespeare or Bronte.... It's a matter of personal preference... what kind of stories we like... It doesn't warrant personal attacks for our opinions...

You expressed your opinion well. Some people can't debate without insulting and name calling don't lower yourself.

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 538 comments Naw, I'll just go pick up another book. And push my re-read of Twilight and The Host closer to the top of my list and relish every moment.

The group rules say that personal attacks are absolutely not allowed. Everyone has a different opinion, and if you can express those opinions politely and civilly, that's fine. If you're going to personally attack other members, that is NOT fine.

Steven, I'm going to have to ask you to refrain from being rude to other members. If you keep it up, I'm going to boot you out of the group. If you have a problem with that, send me a private message.

If personal attacks and rudeness continue in this thread, I'll shut it down. Again, if you have a problem, send me a private message.

Carolyn F. Alana (aka ◘Whiplash◘) wrote: "she has another movie coming out, too: The Host.

just saying."

I loved The Host and that was my first Meyer book. I just don't get it, if a writer has a following and they are able to sell their books, then they are a writer. They have written words on a page that someone has enjoyed - that a writer isn't it? You just can't judge them and compare them to Shakespeare, they are a writer for their genre. I agree with the sour grapes comment. Anyone who dislikes a writer because they think their success is undeserved needs to really examine that criticism. And whatever anybody says about Twilight, I thought The Host was a really good book. So people really need to get over themselves and just don't read her books if you don't like her.

message 69: by S.L.J. (new)

S.L.J. (sammyslj) | 103 comments King has never been one to bite his tongue. He's slammed plenty of authors over the years and I doubt he'll stop any time soon. His voice is simply louder than most because he'd an incredibly successful author.

BTW. I don't think people realize that King is actually much more successful than Meyers. He wrote The Shawshank Redemption, Salem's Lot, Carrie, The Shining, The Green Mile and so on.

SM books sold: 100 million plus.
SK books sold: 350 million plus.

I thought I couldn't be shocked by any of your comments after some of the things you've said but I was wrong. After all that name calling and slamming of SM do you mean to say you haven't even read the book? How can you argue so vehemently about something you haven't even read.

I'm curious as to why you posted this thread in a group that is aimed at readers who like vampire books, then. I notice you also posted the exact same thing in a few other groups, and frankly, it looks to me like you're just trying to stir up controversy. I really don't appreciate that in my group, so if you'd like to offer an alternate explanation, I'm all ears.

And this is a reminder to everyone in the thread: be polite and civil. If you can't be, then don't participate in this discussion. If you can't talk about why you don't like vampires or Twilight without saying that it sucks, that's not civil. Likewise, no one should be insulting another member or saying anything like "get over yourself."

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) | 538 comments I have to admit I'm perplexed Steven, you like Stephen King and said he's one of your 'favs' but you dislike the entire vampire book literary genre- what are your thoughts on 'Salem's Lot?

message 73: by The BookChick (new)

The BookChick (thebookchick305) I do admit that it appears that contrived controversy for the purpose of self-promotion seems like the intent. And saying "hahaha" behind something doesn't really excuse the brusque tone behind the comment.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here. He is posting this in other threads too. It seems like Steven is trying to create a hype for his books. How many times has he posted the link to his website, or told us of his academic credentials (as if that impresses people). I hate seeing an author go to such lengths to promote books. He wonders why he has lagging sales, he doesn't realize this kind of "marketing" (I use that term loosely) puts a bad taste in our mouths. I personally would not read his book on principal alone. And I think Pamela asked a fantastic question. He admits to not liking vampires, why is in this group then?

message 75: by The BookChick (last edited Apr 05, 2012 09:29AM) (new)

The BookChick (thebookchick305) And let me add, I am not a fan of the Twilight saga. God knows that I have my own opinions about the book. However, I have read the book so I can offer intelligible comments about it based on what I have read. Additionally, I don't infer that lovers of the series are stupid, naive, or unlearned/unread. I can read Twilight and A Brave New World and identify certain elements that I like and dislike about both.

message 76: by Dana (new)

Dana | 2 comments That's what I was wondering Pamela. I've been following this discussion since last night, and it appears to me that perhaps this topic is being used to generate interest in Steven and his books, not to engage fellow GR members in a productive discussion. Although I will say that it doesn't quite seem logical seeing as how he's insufficiently attempted to insult the intelligence of almost everyone on the thread now.

I am very interested in your reply Steven.

message 77: by Anne (new)

Anne Mikusinsi (abghostwriter) | 155 comments Sad that he can't engage in a debate, or have a discussion without calling names.

Michelle(Chelle) aka Nightshade - Cake Whisperer (michmag) Steven - I'm curious as to why you suddenly felt the need to share Mr. Kings comments when they were made over 3 years ago....seems like very outdated information to me.

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, being as it was his first post on this board in two years, one can only guess his motives...

message 80: by The BookChick (last edited Apr 05, 2012 10:23AM) (new)

The BookChick (thebookchick305) I don't understand where all the anger is coming from, Steven. As with you, members of this group are entitled to express their opinions about books and discussion comments. Far be it from me to challenge anyone about their opinions because they are subjective and germane to that individual. However, I speak from personal knowledge as a mentor to teenagers, Twilight inspired many of them to read books like The Hunger Games (which has been on USA Today's bestseller list for 135 consecutive weeks). So yes, where you may think Twilight was an epic fail, it did succeed in motivating young people to read.

There is a quote that I love that says “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few are to be chewed and digested.” - Francis Bacon

The quote clearly identifies that there are several types of books. Not all books are meant to promote learning...some are just for pure enjoyment or entertainment value.

Michelle(Chelle) aka Nightshade - Cake Whisperer (michmag) I love that quote Bookie.

This whole thread needs to be deleted. Or at least renamed to the lets insult each other thread, because Steven is hardly the only offender. Before you all continue criticizing one person, take a look at your comments. It's like bickering children, and no one is looking too good here.

Ms. Moderator, you are singling one person out for the acts of many, while including yourself it the petty squabble.

EVERYONE needs to reign it in.

message 83: by Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

Pamela (foxglovewitch) | 614 comments Mod
Gee, let's see, Steven. You titled this thread "What naive people read and enrich," which is bound to stir up crap. You dredged up an article from three years ago and cross-posted it to several different groups.

And please don't pull out the old "it's a free country" bit. Sure, you're welcome to your opinion. In this group, though, you have to follow my rules, and my rules say that if you're going to talk about something you don't like, you need to be civil about it, and everyone (not just you) needs to stop with the personal insults.

These excerpts from your posts are not civil:
"It's funny that you do not know why."
"Obviously, you need a course in Logic 101??? My Dear... "
"You think people who don't have a foggiest about the correct form of writing should be the judges? NO, you publish a book in the best form you can, then you let the public judge it. Where did you people grow up--in some godforsaken village? Did you take any classes in grade school? And you want to be the judges??? Hahaha, this IS terrible!!!"
"I can tell you about many people who should not be known and are very well known. Go to my site, get some education, lady. And who are you so special to have to hear of me?"
"Bitchie, go see an Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor, he/she might help you with your hearing problems... "

I am the moderator of this group, and I think that you're out of line. So knock it off.

So once again, everyone is welcome to critique books in this group if they can do it in a polite, civil conversation that doesn't involve insulting each other's taste. Stirring up shit and personal attacks, however, are not welcome in this group.

message 84: by Anne (new)

Anne Mikusinsi (abghostwriter) | 155 comments Some people just exist to stir up trouble. Steven, obviously is one of them. Hey, maybe he IS Stephen King! :P

message 85: by The BookChick (last edited Apr 05, 2012 10:43AM) (new)

The BookChick (thebookchick305) Tabitha, "EVERYONE" is a very general term but yet it does not apply to everyone as I have not said anything insulting to Steven or anyone else in this group. I enjoy lively discussions and do not subscribe to petty baser urges to call names or fling poo at passersby.

The level of anger seems to be unwarranted and unnecessary. Additionally, to outright challenge a moderator may not be the wisest course of action as she can remove/ban you from participating in this group.

Let's all exercise higher cognition and have a discussion without anger or name calling.

message 86: by Pamela, Moderatrix (new)

Okay, you're right, Tabitha. This thread isn't going anywhere. I'm freezing it, and I will contact anyone who was also laying out personal attacks through private message because I really don't have time to list it all out.

Any problems should be addressed to me in PM.
