Why do wizards need to hide their identity?

They have a wand, they know the spells, then why do wizards need to hide their identity from muggles...? Unless, of course, the 'moral issue' of not portraying themselves as superior than their counterparts in the muggle world, I don't see much reason for wizards to hide their identity from muggles... I know this must've occured to a lot of people and there must be some explanation.... Only that I am not aware of it.

Well if you have read The Tales of Beedle the Bard then you know that wizards didnt always hide their identity but I think that the reason they do now is because humans are very greedy and would want thease powers and could end up harming wizards if they like tried to capture them and I know that wizards could just pull out their wands and do a spell to stop them but they they could hurt the muggles and they don't want any vilence or a lease most of them don't.

I completely agree with what Micaela said. It's to protect the muggles and wizards.

yes, it is true..........but y be go generous and caring if the muugles dont??? and how can they possibly HARM them when they can use simple spells to stop the?? but i do agree that some of them may use avada kedavra if they get too irritated........but also the people have got a right to know abt the disappearences and killing of thier fellow muggles............when voldemort was on the loose.......

becase most of them belive that they should live side by side in peace with humans and not try to dominate them

If you reread Sorcerer's Stone book #1 Hagrid tells Harry the reason "Because muggles would want solutions to all their problems"

Tanvi I get it but how could a muggle force a wizard to do things for him?

I think in a perfect world Muggles and Magic could coincide. But in today's world they would be considered crazy, think about the Salem Witch Trials. That was a very long time ago, but does anyone think that magic being out in the open would go over well? Not to mention what Hagrid said in the book is absolutely right - thanks Kc.
