What Comics Are You Reading - April 2012

Grabbed the first 7 issues of The Dark Knight at my local comic book store. Will try to make time to read it. Will get caught up on Walking Dead and Avengers Vs. X-men. I bought Batman: The Long Halloween several years ago and haven't made time to read it yet. Going to try and do that this month.

Amazing Agent Luna Omnibus 3 - The spiritual successor to Kim Possible by two of the writers for that series. Luna's a genetically engineered teenaged secret agent who's sent under cover at an elite prep school to spy on supervillain Dr. Doom Baron Underbheit Count von Bruken's son. Who of course turns out to be super dreamy and attracted to Luna.

On the non-sci-fi side, I'm reading the second volume of Chihayafuru. Considering this is the cover:



I think I may have to give up my man card.

Northlanders, Vol. 5: Metal and The Sixth Gun: Book 1 -Cold Dead Fingers. And, if I have the chance, start reading Criminal: The Deluxe Edition.

Of course, this is in addition to all the comics I read as individual issues.

I'm re-reading the entire Planetary series by Warren Ellis. I'm also trying to keep up on a few of DC's New 52 titles, like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Action Comics and Grifter.

I recently got really into comics with the New 52 thing. I've mainly been keeping up on New 52 stuff - Wonder Woman, Batman, Detective Comics, Flash, Animal Man, Swamp Thing and a few others. Also reading Fatale and recently got into Locke and Key. I'm also reading the Walking Dead and I also discovered No Place Like Home (being a fan of Wizard of Oz - the film - this was kind of a must-read for me).

I recently finished X-Men: Curse of the Mutants. Great stuff. Now I'm looking at finishing up Buffy season 8 and The Sword.

I just finished reading The Ballad of Halo Jones by Alan Moore. Like any other really early Moore stuff, it was a little rough around the edges, but the last third is actually very good. Very similar to The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the Twenty-First Century, actually (only about a decade earlier).

I recently picked up the new TMNT comics that IDW started releasing a few months ago. Kevin Eastman (the creator of the original series) is leading the charge, and I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying them. Much better than the last incarnation that they tried to pass.

I just started The New York Four by Brian Wood last night. I loved DMZ, so wanted to read something else by Wood already, and this series (New York Four) is based around four female characters.

A lot of comics are male-dominated with a mostly male cast of characters, so I'm happy for this one. Hope I enjoy it as much as I'm expecting to.

He writes a lot of adult comics in Heavy Metal too.

I'll have to check those out. I haven't read any of his stuff since I was a kid reading the original TMNT. I fell out of comics for a while, but found a local shop a couple of years ago and started picking up the hobby again.

I'm reading a webcomic: Agatha the Genius Girl. The book was free in Amazon last month, and I loved it, and now I'm reding the comic. At first I didn't like the style, but ones I got over that I haven't stop reading!

It's the first western comic I read since ... December?

I have a stack of trades and monthly books that I am working through but am currently reading through The Unwritten, Vol. 1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity trades. Basically it supposes that Harry Potter was based on a real person, only he didn't know he wasn't real? Also reading a number of DC titles (Animal Man, Batman, Voodoo, etc.) and some of the new Image titles (Peter Panzerfaust, Saga, No Place Like Home).

After seeing that Alan Moore had won a Bram Stoker award for Neonomicon I got the trade paperback from a seller on Amazon. My local comic book store got me the first issue of "The Strain" so now that I have the first 3 issues I'll start in on that comic. Also picked up DareDevil 10.1 today since IGN's comic run said it was a good issue to start with this version of the series since .1 issues are made to get you caught up. Also grabbed issue 1 of Avengers Vs. X-Men.

I just finished Geoff Jonns and Jim Lee's run on the New 52 Justice League. Kind of anti-climatic. I'm thinking of grabbing the new TMNT by Kevin Eastmen. The Turtles are classic.

Yeah, they have a collection that's something like 300 pages for the first few issues and the "One-Shots" miniseries issue one.

Love Unwritten. Wonderful series.

Right now, I am really enjoying the Unwritten Series by Mike Carey. Some amazing art and writing in that one. Lots of really good literary nods as well.

I am also reading Blue Estate, which is fun and a bit cheesy with some of the greatest comic book covers I have ever seen.

I am excited about Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan's Conan the Barbarian, because I have loved Conan since I was a wee reader. Wood seems to have a genuine love for Conan and is hopefully going to do the big warriar justice.

Lil Depressed Boy started off strong but is kinda languishing a bit right now. I love the use of real world places and real world bands, etc in this. Has a great quirky feel.

No Place Like Home is a interesting take on that old story about Oz.

Also reading Rachel Rising by Terry Moore, but having trouble getting into it. I am a big fan of Moore though, so I am sticking it out.

Skullkickers is a lot of fun in a basic hack and slash, beer and pretzels sort of way :)

Also enjoying Vescell, which is rather bizarre and really fun.

I jumped on the Avengers VS Xmen wagon because my mind staggers over the variety of matchups between characters. Like being a coach on Ultimate Fighter and saying, "You know, I'd like to see Red Hulk vs Namor, or maybe Colossus...hmm. Emma Frost has good standup, but Mockingbird has the ground game."

Just read Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 8 vol. 4. Good stuff.....just wish the artwork was a little better.

Two Books that just started that I think would fit in well with this crowd:

SAGA by Brian K. Vaughn -- Author of "Y the Last Man" comes back from his TV writing to pen a new, bizarre science-fiction/fantasy title about a doomed romance between two members of warring species...one that looks vaguely like fairies, the other with rams horns. Also, aristocratic robots with tv monitors for heads, magic, interstellar war, bureaucracy, etc. It's hard to actually explain it...and that was just the first issue.

THE MANHATTAN PROJECTS - by Jonathan Hickman -- longtime Fantastic Four/FF scribe in his creator owned book about a secret alternate history behind the creation of the atom bomb. The comics are to follow weirdly divergent stories for the top scientists of the Manhattan Project, the first issue showing a very different J. Robert Oppenheimer than history remembers him. Also, chapter divisions include quotes from Richard Feynman. The 2nd issue should be out shortly.

Chew: don't let the description put you off, its very well written

Fables/Fairest: fairy tale characters in the modern world

Morning Glories: teens caught in a weird, deadly private school; nothing's been explained but lots of fun

Stuff of Legend: not as kiddy as it looks

Mouse Guard: mice and swords, what's not to love

Lady Mechanika: steam punk

Fallen Angel: no black and white world here

Thanks to Tamahome mentioning Flex and my local comic book seller noticing a sucker when he saw one I picked up a copy of the hard cover. Also grabbed the hardcover of Dare Devil Season 1. Picked up The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. Grabbed Saga #2. Also picked up "Batman: Arkam Unhinged" since I played arkam asylum on PS3 a while ago and IGN comic run said the series seems good so far.

EDIT: I also grabbed and read the first trade paperback as a kindle eBook for "Y: The Last Man". Reading comics on the Kindle Fire isn't as painful as I was expecting.

Glory (strangely good comic)

Of course there's a lot of other series that are fantastic. But I've got to say the one that I completely fell in love with is HABIBI by Craig Thompson. If you never read anything by him I strongly recommend that you read his stuff. He's a tremendous artist, his stories are beautiful and touching. He's the author of BLANKETS which has won several very prestigious awards. Seriously pick up his books you won't regret it.

Reading through this thread I have found a couple of comics that I will have to pick up, cheers guys. I am reading Strain; good one if your a horror fan also just found out that there is a book that Del Toro wrote before making them, Fatale, Manhattan Projects, Saga, Morning Glories but only in the trades, and a lot of marvel stuff so I understand both sides of the Avengers vs X-Men event.

On the advice of someone I work with I grabbed Morning Glories when it first came out. I've got up through issue 14 but haven't had time to read them yet. Since I've not kept up with the individual issues after 14 I figured I'd just grab the next trade paperback to come out.

I'm pretty mainstream with my comics at the moment, im reading New 52 stuff -Flash, Teen Titans and Batgirl (surprisingly good) - Not sure if it counts but ive recently finished the last Deathnote book

-Thorgal by Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosiński: Norse mythology based fantasy with some Sci-fi elements

-Jeremiah by Hermann Huppen: About two young men roaming the Post-apocalytic wastelands of North-America.

Finally got my monthly comics and my favorite one was:

Supercrooks by Mark Millar - basically, a group of criminals with powers get tired of being constantly caught in the USA and decide to move to Europe (Spain to be precise), where apparently there are no super-heroes.

A friend of the author made a teaser clip about it, already thinking about a future movie:
