Margaret (LoveMyFrogs) Cali. Keep a small notebook with you at all times and one next to your bed. Whenever you even have an inkling of an idea, jot it down before you forget. The one in the night stand is especially helpful when you just wake up. A lot of my ideas come through my dreams and if you don't get them down right away upon awakening, you forget.

message 154: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah, I know. It sucks. It'll come back to me somehow . . . I hope. :D

hmm yeah ... i always intend to do that ... i mean, to write down my ideas. sometimes i do. it's funny to go back and see my brainstorming notes, cuz the final story always ends up being WAAAY different.

i remember when i got the idea for injection i was already writing six other stories, so the page in my notebook was titled "crap. another story idea." >< but then i decided to save it for nanowrimo ... oh, and originally, the injection was going to, like, turn ppl into cannibalistic zombies. i don't know why i thought that was a good idea. o.O halfway thru october, i was like, "wait ... that's really stupid; i think i'll change that." ><

Kenzie | 2838 comments Yay! Brigid! Congrats on finishing Injection! Have you still got that 'I just finished a story' vibe? I LOVE that feeling. LOL ☺

yeah ... but at the same time it's kind of numbing, i guess. it's like, it hasn't really sunk in yet. so i'm like, "hmm i feel like i should be working on my book, but i can't, cuz it's OVER!" *sob* i miss it already ... :( fortunately i have an idea for a new story already! >< yippee!!!

message 161: by [deleted user] (new)

lolz. My books have copyrighted charries in them, but that's practically what the whole story is based around. Like I need them in my books. It's the only way my series will work.
So if I get it published, I'm going to have to get rights from a lot of people.

message 162: by [deleted user] (new)

Grace, you're not going crazy. Not even close to doing so.

Because every writer does that. The characters become so developed that they could practically jump off the page, and become part of you. They can't leave. They're like second nature to you. I know some of my characters are. Like they practically know what I'm thinking, what they're thinking, because in a way, we're one person, although we could be total opposites.

The fact that the Twilight Haters said that about Stephenie Meyer, thinking that she was psycho and all because she said that, well they don't understand how real the characters can become to the author! It's not bad that we think they're real, and that we can see ourselves as the characters, it's just that we've developed them so well, that they could be a human being with a personality, and survive in life.

message 163: by [deleted user] (new)

lol I guess it wouldn't be crazy, you're just writing down in a different way of basically how you feel about the person. And yeah, you'd basically be discovering who he is.

If whatever I'm writing on here is making sense. :D

message 164: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Exactly! >< I get so attached to my characters. Like, when my characters cry, I start crying. When they feel really happy, I feel really happy.

Sometimes I even do what my characters are doing while I write about them. Like I'll write, "She sighed" and then I'll sigh.

I hate having to hurt or kill my characters. I'll be, like, crying, and saying "I'M SORRY I'M SORRY I'M SORRY!!!" I feel insane, but ... really. I'm so evil sometimes.

And then when a story is over, it's really weird. I'm so used to having the characters in my head, and then they'll just ... leave. And it's like "Wait ... come back ..." But they don't really have anything more to say to me; they're done telling their story. Only, usually some other characters will move in right away and I'll get all busy writing again.

I mean, I always have a special place in my heart for my old characters ... But I have a lot of characters to keep track of by now. ><

I agree; people who don't write don't understand. I've tried to explain it sometimes, like, "And then my characters are talking in my head and they won't shut up!!"

And it's like, "You have voices in your head ... ?" O.o

"No! I mean yes! I mean no! I mean ... sort ... of." ><

Well, the way I see it: Writing is a socially acceptable form of insanity. lol

I want to try and get published this year. Or at least try and get my story to a PUBLISHER by March. I don't care if they hate it, I just want to get the feeling that I finished it, I've sent it to a publisher, and that there's a fifty/fifty chance that they could read it, like it, and publish it. Or there could be the chance that they never want to read it, and say, sorry we didn't like your story.
Then I understand that I should just keep editing the story, possibly add some things, rewrite somethings, etc. etc. etc.

yeah i want to do more work on publishing this year, too.

message 171: by Paige (last edited Jan 01, 2009 08:31PM) (new)

Paige Miller to post 167: lol. Sometimes i think u have 2 be a special kind of crazy to write!!! My characters yell at me constantly!!! Sometimes I yell back and I can practically read my mom's mind:

"Damn. She needs therapy."

And Saved By Grace- I would LOVE to have a boyfriend like one of my characters. So don't worry- if you're insane, so am I. Well actually that shouldn't be too reassuring, because I most definitely am insane. :D

message 172: by Paige (new)

Paige Miller ^^ lol. :D I like that last part especially. :D and sometimes i think i might like the sarcasm. As long as they weren't using it on me.

Yeah, I have a notebook on my bed, and whenever I get ideas at night, I turn the flashlight next to my pillow on and write it down. XD

Uuuhh...carnivorous zombies?? erm, creepy much?? i think that it would have given me nightmares if injection had been that way...lol XD

OMG, Grace, you're definitely NOT crazy. I feel exactly the same way. I'm so attached to my characters...I love them all, even the ones that have reason for me to hate them. When I have to kill them, it's literally painful...and when I finish a story, it's so sad, because then my beloved characters have no story for me to write them in anymore...and it makes me feel sad and empty.

And yes, I would LOVE to have a boyfriend be like a few of my male characters. *cough* Andrew *cough* Caleb *cough* Kahi *cough* So don't worry, it's DEFINITELY not just you.

And yeah, people who don't write don't understand it. I'll be talking about characters as if they're real people, and people will say "You know they're not real, right? Why are you pretending they are? They're just characters!" And when I say they're in my head all the time, like Brigid said, people think I'm crazy.

message 174: by Kenzie (new)

Kenzie | 2838 comments He-he-he ... I dunno about me and my male characters ... I think we'd have trouble getting along. Just 'cause some of my characters are a LOT like me, with the sarcasm and all ... yeah, we'd get into a fight 'cause one of us would say something sarcasic and the other would misinterpret it.

I HATE how no one seems to understand me when I say that I hear my characters. I mean, you guys understand 'cause your writers, but I'll be sitting in class or something and start madly writing. The person next to me'll be like, "Watcha doin'?" And I'll say, "Writing." "Why?" "Because {insert character name here} told me that they're about to blow up a bathroom...." Then they ask me who so-and-so is, and I'll say, "The character from my book." Then they just stare at me like I'm crazy or someat.

Am I crazy?

Really, I think I might be right now ... I really need sleep ... bad ... like ... uber duber badly....

yeah none of u are crazy. i get ginormous crushes on my male characters too ... some of them in particular ... o>
i also start to think like my characters sometimes too ...

like after i had finished soul stealer, i was walking around one day in boston w/my family, and i started thinking of all the random ways i could die and i was like HOLY CRAP I'M TURNING INTO DAVID -- OH NOOOO!!! O_o

><

now i don't write in notebooks anymore though, so i can't ... :(

message 181: by [deleted user] (new)

I write in notebooks sometimes. But what I really don't like is when someone next to you is trying to cheat off of you, but really, they're cheating off of the story you're writing, that would be so awkward.

message 183: by [deleted user] (new)

Some? Those were right on the spot! my favorite is number four.

Writers' Block: When characters get fed up with all you put them through and go on strike.
So true, so very true right now.

message 184: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 42 comments lol...I just go to my email for updates and I had to comment on those quotes (and where did you find them? Are there more?) I so agree with every one of them. One reason I love going on writing groups online is because I could say something like I cried for hours after I killed one of my favourite characters (actually might cry again if I think about it ;( ) and I would actually be understood. Most of the time when I so much as hint talking about my characters my friends and familly get a kinda panicked look, 'specially when I talk very matter of factly about one of them torturing another...but they'll work past it...lol.

message 185: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) haha. Man, I don't show my parents my insanity...although I think they suspect...oh well. And I know what you mean in Number 4. My characters, it's like I hate them, but I think it's more self discovery of myself, if that makes any sense. How would I react if my parents were murdered? What would I do if I was left with my siblings? Who would I turn to? If I changed a few qualities of my personality, would it turn out differently? Questions like that, and then, suddenly, I have Jayd. And she's a lot like me, but a lot different at the same time. And whenever she's PMSing,(a lot more common nowadays,) she decides she doesn't want to be my experiment and walks away...just in suspended animation.

Ah, those ones are perfect!!! I so have to look for them in the flare on facebook!!!!

One that I found that I thought was funny was...

Please do not annoy the writer. She may put you in a book and kill you.

message 187: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) ha ha. So true.

message 188: by Veronica, What the neck!? (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) | 2889 comments Mod
Oh! I found some other ones!!!

1)Writing is a socially acceptable form of schizophrenia
2)Characters. Can't live with 'em, can't kill 'em off because it nullifies the entire plot
3)Writer's Block? Dye a character's hair hot pink, then see what happens.
4)So then I did the only thing I could do. I made him a character in my novel.
5)I write. What's your super power?
6)Inspiration is wonderful when it happens, but the writer must develop an approach for the rest of the time...the wait is simply too long.
7)Idea fairy meet brick wall ((and a brick wall is in the background of this one))
8)J'écris, donc je suis ((I write, therefore I am.))
9)Sometimes I wish my characters were real. But then I remember they all want to kill me and I feel happy again.
10)You know you write too much when you love your characters in "that way."
11)The voices in my head won't shut up until I write. The really annoying ones end up dead.
12)Do unto your characters the most deranged things humanly possible
13)Behold the power of my WHAT IF...?
14)The hardest part about writing a story is finding the title.
15)Writing is the only thing that, when I do it, I don't feel like I should be doing something else.
16)Some days, the body count will exceed your word count... and that's okay.
17)If I am supposed to be writing, I probably am not
18)Otherwise known as... interrupt me and die
19)Writing should feel easy like a monkey driving a speedboat.
20)These words I write keep me from total madness
