In the Ardennes thread a few of us have been discussing about having a Battle of the Bulge theme read for May 2013. Members can select and read any book that covers the 1944 Ardennes offensive and chat about aspects of their book with other members reading about the battle. Anyone interested in joining in?

and I'm also up for a May Battle of the Bulge read.
Hi A.L. as soon as I can get a few more members to join in I will set up a page for the book and let the author know so she can join in as well.
I would also be interested in the The Secret Rescue. I was worried the book might not be available for me, but it is, so I'll pre-order it once I know this is a go.
Hi D, if you and A.L are keen to read it I will set up a thread for the discussion and also let the author know so she can join in. When would it suit you both to start?
I will set a page up for the book and you guys can start whenever your ready. I will let you know when everything is right to go.
D wrote: "The book isn't release until 7 May, so I'm good to start any time after that."Would June work for you, D?
Thanks, Aussie Rick, for being willing to set the thread up!
Hi A.L. & D, I have set up a thread for the book, you guys and anyone else who is interested can start when you are ready:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
I will let the author know and she may join you sometime after you start chatting about the book and you can ask her questions as you go along. Hopefully it will be a lot of fun :)
Hi all,Looking forward to taking part in my first group read with the Poland one next weeks.
Could I make a suggestion for June? European naval aviation such as:
War in a Stringbag: The Classic Second World War Fleet Air Arm Autobiography
or
Fly West
Any other suggestions also welcome if this is a go-er...

Hi Charles a cracking subject for us to cover and it should bring in some nice recommendations from people.
Can't see why not Charles - a good suggestion. I will try and set up a thread soon for a June group theme read & discussion.
After Charles suggestion about a group/buddy read of books covering European naval aviation I wonder if we should open it up to cover just an aviation theme month so it's not too restricted - suggestions???
Further to that I am also thinking that every few months we should have a campaign theme month. Members can vote on a specific campaign of WW2 and we can read any book that covers that campaign or a specific battle in that campaign. What do folks think?

I'm fine with the idea from Charles and will look to join him with naval aviation; giving flexibility for others to widen to aviation is sensible too. As for a campaign month this is another good Rick idea :) as it will get me reading some areas I've only touched on or not at all (e.g Australia in New Guinea and Borneo; Madagasgar, Finland, the Sino-Japanese war; Submarine war in the Pacific and more on Burma).
I think it's fun to have a mix for the group/buddy reads. Sometimes it's nice to all read the same book, but I like the idea of campaign months. I think the broader topics make it easier for more people to participate and it's fun to get highlights on a topic from more than one book.
For the campaign theme read I am thinking of these very broad theatres to vote on and they can include any book covering land, sea or air operations within that theatre/campaign:* Pacific Campaign
* European Campaign
* Russian Campaign
* Mediterranean Campaign
* Atlantic Ocean Campaign
* African Campaign
Any other campaigns I have forgotten that can't be covered in one of those above?

Another recent suggestion for a theme month was books covering WW2 special forces and/or their campaigns and battles. It could be books on Australian Commandos, British LRDG/SAS, US Rangers, the German Brandenburgers or battles like Dieppe, Narvik, Pointe du Hoc, etc, any takers?
Another possible theme 'biography/memoir' It would probably be better if limited or connected in some way, a specific person, location/campaign, rank, or type(pow/escape/going to war/survival).
Good idea Tom, maybe we could direct that theme read to a particular country as in a Germany, American or British commander and every few months pick a different country, do you think that may work?

Good idea Tom. Also on the special/elite forces we could also include irregular troops too if that helps. I also think Charles' suggestion of Naval aviation is one that we could explore too.
That may work, just throwing out an idea to mix it up a little. I only get a few WWII books in a year, due to time and other interests, so its gotta work for others too.i am thinking ideally there would be some interaction or connection between the different people being read for a group reading different people/books.. so 'involved in manhattan project' or 'commander at/(participant of) the battle of XXXX' or 'Churchill' might be a few examples.

All good for me. Likewise on WWII books as not everything I read is on that subject but I'll certainly look to join this one.
I promised Charles that we would do an aviation theme read in June. Charles was interested in European naval aviation but I wonder if that may be too restrictive for members. Shall we try that or shall we enlarge it to European theatre aviation or just WW2 aviation campaigns/battles/planes and/or pilots?
Peoples thoughts?
I've been meaning to get around to reading
so it would be a perfect excuse to bump it to the top of the list. But if we go with a more specific topic, I'd be down with that as well, I'd just find a different title.
I think we should keep it to Europe. Nationality or type of aviation shouldn't matterTionne - I thought Fly Boys was very good, but not as good asFlags of Our Fathers. You should read it weather or not it fits into the theme
Thanks, Happy, it's on the TBR list! I'll have to bump it up closer to the top! I picked up a copy about a month ago, but haven't gotten around to it yet. :-)
Apologies for being out of the discussion on this - was able to view it on an iPhone which isn't conducive to long posts (but was able to squeeze in the museums thread during a few spare mins at work).A-OK with broadening the topic, Euro-naval aviation is pretty narrow (and may prove difficult to find a set couple of easily available books on), so a general aviation read would be good. It would also mean that people can engage on theaters that interest them, or as suggested specific nationality or type.
The SF theme gets my thumbs up as well!
Perhaps:
Saturday at M.I.9: The Classic Account of the Ww2 Allied Escape Organisation
or
SAS in Tuscany 1943 45?
I think we will go with a general aviation theme, folks can read any WW2 book as long its about airplanes and their campaigns & battles. I will set up a new thread shortly and put the link here so folks can find it.
For those interested in the June aviation theme read here is the thread to post in:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
If the July theme read vote ends up with the European theatre it may be the perfect opportunity to read Rick Atkinson's final book in his trilogy:

I've picked up the first one, have yet to get around to reading it! I need more time in the day!!
Haha! If I could but whittle this stack on my desk down! I did just finish The Longest Winter. So that is progress!
Yeah, I liked it. John Creger was from my hometown! So that was neat. Really interesting story of that platoon. Amazing fellows!!
I thinking that since we are going to have an aviation theme read in June, maybe we should try a general naval theme read later on. Anyone else interested - say in September?
