'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments In the Ardennes thread a few of us have been discussing about having a Battle of the Bulge theme read for May 2013. Members can select and read any book that covers the 1944 Ardennes offensive and chat about aspects of their book with other members reading about the battle. Anyone interested in joining in?

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments That's good enough for me! I will organise a thread for May then :)

That book is on my to-read list, so, yes, I'm in for a group read if anyone else is interested.

and I'm also up for a May Battle of the Bulge read.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Hi A.L. as soon as I can get a few more members to join in I will set up a page for the book and let the author know so she can join in as well.

message 156: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 23 comments I would also be interested in the The Secret Rescue. I was worried the book might not be available for me, but it is, so I'll pre-order it once I know this is a go.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Hi D, if you and A.L are keen to read it I will set up a thread for the discussion and also let the author know so she can join in. When would it suit you both to start?

message 159: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 23 comments The book isn't release until 7 May, so I'm good to start any time after that.

message 160: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments I will set a page up for the book and you guys can start whenever your ready. I will let you know when everything is right to go.

Would June work for you, D?

Thanks, Aussie Rick, for being willing to set the thread up!

message 162: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (drokka) | 23 comments June works well for me.

message 163: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Hi A.L. & D, I have set up a thread for the book, you guys and anyone else who is interested can start when you are ready:

I will let the author know and she may join you sometime after you start chatting about the book and you can ask her questions as you go along. Hopefully it will be a lot of fun :)

message 164: by Charles (new)

Charles | 110 comments Hi all,

Looking forward to taking part in my first group read with the Poland one next weeks.

Could I make a suggestion for June? European naval aviation such as:

War in a Stringbag The Classic Second World War Fleet Air Arm Autobiography (Cassell Military Classics) by Charles Lamb
War in a Stringbag: The Classic Second World War Fleet Air Arm Autobiography

or

Fly West by Ivan Southall
Fly West

Any other suggestions also welcome if this is a go-er...

message 165: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Hi Charles a cracking subject for us to cover and it should bring in some nice recommendations from people.

message 166: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Can't see why not Charles - a good suggestion. I will try and set up a thread soon for a June group theme read & discussion.

message 167: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments After Charles suggestion about a group/buddy read of books covering European naval aviation I wonder if we should open it up to cover just an aviation theme month so it's not too restricted - suggestions???

message 168: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (last edited Apr 03, 2013 08:43PM) (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Further to that I am also thinking that every few months we should have a campaign theme month. Members can vote on a specific campaign of WW2 and we can read any book that covers that campaign or a specific battle in that campaign. What do folks think?

message 169: by Mike, Assisting Moderator US Forces (new)

Mike | 3595 comments I like it!

message 170: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Cool, well it's you and me so far Mike :)

message 171: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (last edited Apr 04, 2013 09:35AM) (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments I'm fine with the idea from Charles and will look to join him with naval aviation; giving flexibility for others to widen to aviation is sensible too.

As for a campaign month this is another good Rick idea :) as it will get me reading some areas I've only touched on or not at all (e.g Australia in New Guinea and Borneo; Madagasgar, Finland, the Sino-Japanese war; Submarine war in the Pacific and more on Burma).

message 172: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Sowards | 500 comments I think it's fun to have a mix for the group/buddy reads. Sometimes it's nice to all read the same book, but I like the idea of campaign months. I think the broader topics make it easier for more people to participate and it's fun to get highlights on a topic from more than one book.

message 173: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Good to hear your views Geevee and A.L., thanks for the input.

message 174: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2281 comments I vote AYE

message 175: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments For the campaign theme read I am thinking of these very broad theatres to vote on and they can include any book covering land, sea or air operations within that theatre/campaign:

* Pacific Campaign
* European Campaign
* Russian Campaign
* Mediterranean Campaign
* Atlantic Ocean Campaign
* African Campaign

Any other campaigns I have forgotten that can't be covered in one of those above?

message 176: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Looks good for me Rick.

message 177: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (last edited May 05, 2013 04:28PM) (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Another recent suggestion for a theme month was books covering WW2 special forces and/or their campaigns and battles.

It could be books on Australian Commandos, British LRDG/SAS, US Rangers, the German Brandenburgers or battles like Dieppe, Narvik, Pointe du Hoc, etc, any takers?

message 178: by Mike, Assisting Moderator US Forces (new)

Mike | 3595 comments I'll be in with The Jedburghs The Secret History of the Allied Special Forces, France 1944 by Will Irwin

message 179: by Tom (new)

Tom | 81 comments Another possible theme 'biography/memoir'

It would probably be better if limited or connected in some way, a specific person, location/campaign, rank, or type(pow/escape/going to war/survival).

message 180: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Good idea Tom, maybe we could direct that theme read to a particular country as in a Germany, American or British commander and every few months pick a different country, do you think that may work?

message 181: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Good idea Tom. Also on the special/elite forces we could also include irregular troops too if that helps. I also think Charles' suggestion of Naval aviation is one that we could explore too.

message 182: by Tom (new)

Tom | 81 comments That may work, just throwing out an idea to mix it up a little. I only get a few WWII books in a year, due to time and other interests, so its gotta work for others too.

i am thinking ideally there would be some interaction or connection between the different people being read for a group reading different people/books.. so 'involved in manhattan project' or 'commander at/(participant of) the battle of XXXX' or 'Churchill' might be a few examples.

message 183: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments All good for me. Likewise on WWII books as not everything I read is on that subject but I'll certainly look to join this one.

message 184: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments I promised Charles that we would do an aviation theme read in June. Charles was interested in European naval aviation but I wonder if that may be too restrictive for members.

Shall we try that or shall we enlarge it to European theatre aviation or just WW2 aviation campaigns/battles/planes and/or pilots?

Peoples thoughts?

message 185: by Tionne (new)

Tionne | 255 comments I've been meaning to get around to reading Flyboys A True Story of Courage by James Bradley so it would be a perfect excuse to bump it to the top of the list. But if we go with a more specific topic, I'd be down with that as well, I'd just find a different title.

message 186: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (last edited May 10, 2013 02:33PM) (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Thanks for your input Tionne. Anyone else got some ideas or suggestions on the aviation theme read?

message 187: by happy (last edited May 10, 2013 09:31PM) (new)

happy (happyone) | 2281 comments I think we should keep it to Europe. Nationality or type of aviation shouldn't matter

Tionne - I thought Fly Boys was very good, but not as good asFlags of Our Fathers. You should read it weather or not it fits into the theme

message 188: by Tionne (new)

Tionne | 255 comments Thanks, Happy, it's on the TBR list! I'll have to bump it up closer to the top! I picked up a copy about a month ago, but haven't gotten around to it yet. :-)

message 189: by Charles (last edited May 11, 2013 08:40AM) (new)

Charles | 110 comments Apologies for being out of the discussion on this - was able to view it on an iPhone which isn't conducive to long posts (but was able to squeeze in the museums thread during a few spare mins at work).

A-OK with broadening the topic, Euro-naval aviation is pretty narrow (and may prove difficult to find a set couple of easily available books on), so a general aviation read would be good. It would also mean that people can engage on theaters that interest them, or as suggested specific nationality or type.

The SF theme gets my thumbs up as well!

Perhaps:

Saturday at M.I.9: The Classic Account of the Ww2 Allied Escape Organisation

or

SAS in Tuscany 1943 45?

message 190: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments I think we will go with a general aviation theme, folks can read any WW2 book as long its about airplanes and their campaigns & battles. I will set up a new thread shortly and put the link here so folks can find it.

message 191: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments For those interested in the June aviation theme read here is the thread to post in:

message 192: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments If the July theme read vote ends up with the European theatre it may be the perfect opportunity to read Rick Atkinson's final book in his trilogy:

The Guns at Last Light The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945 by Rick Atkinson by Rick Atkinson

I've picked up the first one, have yet to get around to reading it! I need more time in the day!!

message 194: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments You will enjoy it I'm sure Tionne once you can find some more time out of those days eh!

message 195: by Tionne (new)

Tionne | 255 comments Haha! If I could but whittle this stack on my desk down! I did just finish The Longest Winter. So that is progress!

message 196: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Good to hear, was it a decent read?

message 197: by Tionne (new)

Tionne | 255 comments Yeah, I liked it. John Creger was from my hometown! So that was neat. Really interesting story of that platoon. Amazing fellows!!

message 198: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments I thinking that since we are going to have an aviation theme read in June, maybe we should try a general naval theme read later on. Anyone else interested - say in September?

message 199: by Dhiraj (new)

Dhiraj Sharma (dhirajsharma) | 16 comments For Naval Theme in September may I suggest Das Boot Das Boot The Boat by Lothar-Günther Buchheim or Iron Coffins A Personal Account Of The German U-boat Battles Of World War II by Herbert A. Werner

message 200: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Two excellent books Dhiraj!
