Gregg | 195 comments I'm going to get a head start on the February read with Rising Sun, Falling Skies: The Disastrous Java Sea Campaign of World War II by Jeffrey R. Cox. ;-) I recently received all three of the Cox' titles in the series.

Jeff (jeffwong) | 6 comments Would anyone be interested in a group or buddy read of Stalingrad by Vasily Grossman? It’s part of a dilogy, that ends with Life and Fate, which was intended to be a modern day version of War and Peace.

At Goodreads (the company) we had a book club for really long books and we read War and Peace, this was the next pair of books to read.

I no longer work for Goodreads but I thought I’d search for other potentially interested discussants.

There could be up to 5 meetings to help pace the book for the group.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19986 comments OK folks, time for a few ideas for some 2023 theme reads. There are a few 80th anniversaries we could cover:

Feb. - The end of the Guadalcanal campaign.

April - Warsaw Uprising

June - Kursk 1943 and/or Sicily

Aug. - Italian campaign

Oct. - Tarawa

Dec. - Members choice

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Lots of good ideas there. Others to consider would be Operation Chastise (the Dambusters Raid), the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, the Schweinfurt/Regensburg Raids, and maybe Bomber Command's campaign.

Since there are recent books about the first two I mentioned, I already have those set up for 2023!

June - Kursk 1943 or Sicily and/or Italian campaign.

Aug. - Allied Air Ops during 1943.

Oct. - Tarawa

Dec. - Members choice

message 1148: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1748 comments 1944 was a year of epic battles and campaigns:
Anzio
Cassino
D-Day
Market Garden
Aachen
Battle of the Bulge
Warsaw Uprising
Operation Bagration
Cherkassy Pocket
Bombing of Germany by the USAAF and the RAF
Big Week
Lots of invasions in the Pacific: Marshall Islands, Peleliu, the Marianas (Saipan, Tinian & Guam), Leyte
Big naval battles: Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf
Kohima in the CBI

Maybe a month of big battle reads?
