Scarecrow and Shadow Lin
Kendal sat atop Bear and hung onto his long black fur so as not to fall off. The dog's shoulders moved and shifted under her as he walked through the underbrush. She heard the whisperings circling around her but she kept a bored face. "We've been here for what seems like forever, Bear." She said to the dog. "I haven't come across a single traveler in ages." She made a pouting face as she continued. "My sharpies are all but dried up." The dog simply kept walking, knowing where to go. It was then that a man dashed right past them. Kendal turned to watch as he went, putting her hands behind her head lazily. "What's his hurry?"
Cecily followed the man quickly, not once losing her footing as she chased her prey. She saw what looked to be a child riding a large dog. She passed the two with a great speed, her ears were hunkered back and her tail was whipping back and forth as she followed the man, not once letting him out of her sight. Deciding that the child might be lost, and since Cecily knew the area well, due to being trained in the woods since she was younger, she could help the young one find his way back to the outside of the Woods as soon as she had caught her Bounty.
Kendal was just turning her head back, to face forward, when a second figure zoomed passed. She turned again, this one had a tail and furry ears. She smiled a bit. "I wish I had ears like that." Kendal mentioned to the dog again. Bear kept his head facing in the direction they were heading; however, his ears perked a bit, telling her that he was listening. "The tail would be cool too." She mumbled, leaning forward and draping her arm over his right shoulder. Bear continued the ordinary walk back to the tree where he and Kendal lived. It was a large dead tree that had been hollowed out by age. The 'front door' was simply a small hole that the large dog could barely crawl through. Kendal had less of a problem getting in. The top of the tree lay on the ground as it had for years, after a particularly windy storm had snapped it in two. The gaping top had branches and twigs placed along the opening, intertwining with one another to keep the inside dry. An old, dark brown army blanket lay at the bottom and was covered in Bear's shed fur. The trunk was just wide enough for Bear and Kendal to lie down, scrunched together, to sleep during the sleeping hours.
Finally, after a long chase, Cecily had cornered the man that she had been chasing. His back was pinned against the rock wall that blocked his path, and he was blocked on both sides by boulders and trees. Cecily paused, she did not want the man to be killed, it was a dead or Alive bounty, but she couldn't handle the stress of killing another human being unless it was absolutely necessary. She looked at the area around the man. If me made one false move, the boulders would fall and crush him to death. She looked back at the man and then her eyes widened. The man had pulled out a gun and was pointing it at her. He shot it and she dodged the bullet within an inch of her life, but the shock waves from the sound of the bullet leaving the barrel of the gun caused some of the smaller boulders to shake loose and the larger ones fell on top of the him. He cried out in pain as one of them landed on his leg, breaking it, then silence was resumed in the Woods because the next boulder had crushed his head. Blood flew in every direction, a bit of it got onto Cecily's clothing and she grimaced.
"Now that's just gross..." She muttered as she pulled out one of the older cellular phones.
Sh typed in a number and held the phone up to her ear, the ringtone sounded and then after two rings, the other line answered.
"Hello?" A deep voice asked on the other end of the line.
"Boss." She said.
"You catch him?" He asked.
"I think he caught himself. His brain is splattered all over my clothes and some boulders that he managed to dislodge as he tried to shoot me with a large gun." She paused. "I thought that getting down to one bullet after shooting at me forty eight times he would have gotten a clue."
"I see."
"So I need you to send a pick up and clean up crew."
"Alright." He said. "Come tot my office later, you'll get your reward then."

Bear and Kendal were just outside their large tree when they heard a piercing blast. Bear sat up and his pointed ears turned toward the noise. His back was board straight and he growled lowly, taking a few steps forward. Kendal sort of stared after it, not really believing. She hoped that it was simply a new traveler practicing their aim or something. She sat down and folder her legs against her torso, hugging her knees. "What do you think?" She asked Bear. The dog turned his large head toward her, licked her cheek once, and then turned back toward the noise. Kendal sighed. "I don't want to find a mess later. If someone is hunting out here, I'll chase them out." She threatened. She wondered idly if it had something to do with the two who ran passed earlier. She looked toward the dark sky, thinking.
Cecily sighed and then looked up at the sky after she had finished cleaning up her clothing for the most part. The short white and red outfit was splattered with the remnants of her Bounty's blood. She shuddered as the thought of having to take hours to clean it off the next day. She hated doing things like that, but such is the life of a Bounty Hunter.
Pulling off her pack, she opened it and pulled out the information sheet for the Bounty. It read; Geoffrey Midden, 45 years of age. His ex wife set out the Bounty on MIDDEN because he caused the death of his 12 year old son. No one knows the real truth, but what we do know is that he is very skilled in fighting and is not easy to capture. Once before, he managed to escape Hunter JACE BLACK and disappeared into thin air on the much advanced Hunter. Wanted Alive or Dead.
"He could had lived had he kept the Gun pointed no where..." She said with another sigh.

Kendal placed her hand on a branch of a nearby tree. With a simple pull she launched herself onto the highest branch and sat down, crossing her legs. She hid within the many leaves on the dark tree and tried her best to see where the shot came from. Bear sat at the base of the tree, on guard for only a moment more before deciding the threat had passed and he lay in the grass. "I don't see any thing." Kendal whispered down to Bear. "Looks like some rocks fell over there," she informed the dog along with a flick of her wrist in the direction of the rockslide. "But nothing looks unusual from this point." Kendal must have been too far to see any of the blood, because she thought nothing of it. "That wouldn't have made that sound though." Bear simply stared off into the trees, obviously lost interest. Kendal lost interest shorty after and hung from the branch upside down by the insides of her knees. She swung back and forth idly, if only to kill some time.
((>3> WHere have you been Q~Q))
Cecily looked around a bit as she waited for the clean up crew to come. She started to wander around and ultimately found herself walking around to the back of the pile of boulders. When she saw the damage, she cringed and then ran out. The scene was gruesome, and it was one that she did not want to see again anytime soon.

((At a friends house all day, sorry.))
While hanging upside down, Kendal noticed the girl with the tail from before. She watched with interest as she neared the boulders and then booked it out of there. She looked uneasy, but little Kendal couldn't tell from that distance. She felt that something about those rocks was a bit questionable. She turned to Bear after she dropped from the branch, twisting in the air to land on her feet. "Come here, Bear. We have some investigating to do." Bear raised his large head and then worked effortlessly to raise the rest of his body. He walked over to his human companion and sat down, letting her get on him more easily. Kendal then clawed at his fur to help pull herself up. She lightly nudged him in the sides with her bare feet. "Let's go."

Cecily's tail swished back and forth as she leaned against the rocks in the front. What was taking the crew so long to get there? Normally they would have been in and out of here by the 5 minute mark... She sighed as she thought to herself what might have gone wrong or why they were taking so long.
Kendal sat on Bear's back yet again, slowly making her way to were the boulders had collapsed. She hoped that no one was making trouble in her forest. She tried her best to keep things peaceful, even helping strangers who were silly enough to follow the whisperings from the woods. Those silly travelers. She shook her head at the thought, always getting spirited away by every little unusual thing. Bear had gotten used to the small voices long ago, and now stayed with Kendal after receiving her help as a pup. She scratched his larger ears at the memory. "You were a lot smaller back then." She mumbled to him. "To think, I was the one carrying you!"
As they neared the rocks, much like the tailed girl had not too long ago, Kendal clutched her stomach. "Ugh.." She grumbled. She had not fed for a long time and the overwhelming sent made her nauseous. She looked everywhere except at the blood. The blood belonged to a male as well. She groaned and Bear tossed a concerned look at her. "Bear," She mumbled with effort, the flecks in her eyes turning a darker red at her hunger. "We have to go.." She clicked her bare heels into Bears sides gently and the dog leaped, getting the idea, and dashed unknowingly toward Cecily.

Cecily was looking up at the sky then, still waiting. She heard paws hitting the forest ground as the creature drew closer. It did not sound like a threat, so she did not move from her spot. She groaned in impatience as time went on and the clean up crew did not get any closer to getting there. Did the boss send the newer trainees? Hell, could the boss get any dumber?
Kendal's eyes slowly went back to their original light silver and red color when she got far enough that she could no longer smell the males insides. She knew immediately he was the man who ran past her from before. He smelled the same. So that was his hurry.. She thought bitterly. She didn't know if the tailed girl had killed him, or if she was a companion and they were running from something else all together. Her eyes narrowed. Either way, something had brought trouble to her home, and with new found determination, she vowed to cast it out. Bear was still running when they came right up to the tailed girl. Kendal pulled gingerly on Bear's ears and he pulled up on his hind legs to stop. Kendal would have flung off had she not had a firm grip on the dog's fur.
"You!" She called after Bear was standing normally again. "Do you have any information on who or what caused that ruckus in my forest?" She was glaring at the tailed girl accusingly.
"You!" She called after Bear was standing normally again. "Do you have any information on who or what caused that ruckus in my forest?" She was glaring at the tailed girl accusingly.
Cecily looked up and saw Kendal. She recognized her as the boy that she had passed earlier. A bit confused by the glare that she was receiving from the boy, she looked back at her, but not in a threatening way. "If you must know, I trained here in this forest for many years. And that pile of rocks over there saved my life." She said looking up at the sky now.
Kendal's jaw clenched. "But not his. You have as much as three seconds to explain!" She raised her arm and placed it on Atropos, her two-handed sword that was slung across her back, threateningly. Bear shifted uncomfortably, obviously aware as to how agitated his human companion was.
"He was a bounty. A murderer if you will. And he was my pay job too." She said. "I was going to take him in alive, but he got himself cornered there and shot his gun at me, causing the boulders to topple on top of him."
Kendal paused, that would explain the shot earlier. She let go of her sword hesitantly, but stayed on guard. "And how am I to know I can trust you?" She asked, still glaring. She was suddenly distracted by the sight of the tailed girl's bag. She had to stop herself from asking if she had any sharpies. Her glare faltered a bit, but stayed for the most part in place. "Well?"
"Because if he would have been left to roam around in the forest, you might not still be here." She said plainly. "She looked at Kendal and saw that she was eyeing her bag. "If you are thinking about taking my bag, go ahead, all I have is a small pocket knife that is barely worth anything and few Sharpies. So nothing of real interest."
Her purpose lost, she slid off of Bear and inched closer. Curse this tailed girl! Kendal thought, She knows my weakness! She reached out with small hands and large, sparkling eyes. She didn't want to just take the bag, no matter how much her mischievous pixie genes did. She still couldn't tell whether or not the tailed girl was lying, but decided to trust her, at least for the time being. Bear stayed close to her side, keeping an eye on the stranger.
"Oh...you want one?" She asked, curious. She reached her hand into the pack and pulled out a dark purple sharpie, holding it out to her. "Here." She said. "I don't really have much use for them really."
Smiling brilliantly, Kendal snatched the purple pen excitedly with her tiny hands and quickly took a small hop away, immediately drawing on her arms and nearby rocks. She had a policy, of course. "What would you like in return?" She ask as she arched her head over her shoulder to look at the tailed girl. "It's a policy of mine, you see." She explained casually. She turned her head back to continue with her childlike doodles. "In exchange for the sharpies that travelers bring me, I give them one thing. It can be a small task, piece of information, or advice." She finished a badly drawn doodle of a dinosaur on her arm and held it up closer to her face, for a better look. She admired the thick lines and lovely color.
Cecily smiled back at her. "I might come back and ask for some help later, but right now, I am in no need of assistance at the moment." She said. She looked up at the sky again. A few moments later, she heard the sound of the cleaning crew's vehicle coming down the dirt road.
Kendal's head shot up from her doodling almost instantly. She had not seen a car or other vehicle in ages, having lived in the deeper parts of the Whispering Woods. The last time wasn't a pleasant experience either. She quickly used her legs to leap into the top of a tree, hiding in the leaves, completely unseen from the cleaning crew. Bear, being a dog, couldn't follow, so he sat lazily next to Cecily.
Cecily smiled at the dog and let the cleaning crew do their job. She waited for the Okay and then the crew left with the body. She sighed, glad that the mess was cleaned up.
Kendal slowly slipped down the tree after the area was clear. She dusted off her shorts and wrapped her arms lazily around Bear's neck. The sharpie was safely put into her book bag. She stared after the vehicles and the cleaning crew. The scent of blood was still in the area, but it was now masked by the cleaning materials. "Very efficient." She commented flatly. Her stomach growled lowly, and she clutched her gut. With her sensitive nose she could still smell the fading sent of the red liquid. The red in her eyes got a bit darker, but not to the extent that they had before.
Cecily's ears twitched as the wind howled in her ear, leaving whispers in her mind. She easily brushed them off and left them to waste. She looked over at Kendal. "You do realize that the smell of the blood here is going to attract the Living trees? You should probably leave to go to somewhere safe."
Kendal looked up with an unamused expression, scratching Bear's ears. "I've lived here for years, trying to keep the peace so idiots like you didn't cause a ruckus and awaken these trees. They've been dormant for a long time." She explained. "And so have I." She muttered under her breath. She had gone so long without blood, completely fine, but after being blasted with the scent her tongue felt dry and the flecks in her eyes were getting darker and enlarging to cover her whole iris, making them completely crimson. She licked at her lips a bit absently. "I can't leave here. The whisperings have kept me save. They'll get me if I leave." she didn't go through the pain of explaining who was after her. A flashbulb memory was brought up and she got glimpses of images of white coats, long needles, and cold tables. She shuddered, her eyes filling with fear. "Take Bear. I'll try to stay alive here, until the trees calm down." But even as she spoke the roots were shaking to life, slowly waking and grabbing what they could. Bear licked Kendal with deep concern. She buried her face in his soft fur before a root grabbed her ankle with a snap. The roots creaked with age and hunger. She screamed loudly as she was pulled from the other two. "Tailed girl!" She called. "Save Bear!" The roots spread slowly, but were getting faster, waking from their disoriented state.
Cecily cursed, then let her power over flames surround the attacking roots, burning them away. Only the tree that was dragging Kendal away. "Hurry!" She cried, keeping the other trees at bay with her powers. She was not going to let Kendal fall prey to the trees if she had the power to do so.
"Don't burn the trees!" She snarled at the Tailed Girl. The forest had protected her for most of her live, and she wanted to returned the favor, even if they wanted to feast on her. Kendal leaped out of the trees grasp and rolled as she hit the ground. She quickly fixed her footing to leap again and pounced on top of Bear. The dog didn't seem surprised by this action at all, but he was definitely weary of the roots. She nudged him with her heels and he leaped down a narrow path. "This way, Tailed Girl!" Kendal called. "I know a short cut out of here." She decided to, at the very least, get the Tailed Girl and Bear out before she took a course of action. Bear ran quickly down the animal path, bounding over and around the roots at the grabbed at the canine's legs. Kendal's eyes narrowed in concentration as she hung on to Bear's fur.
Cecily followed the small boy quickly as they ran to avoid the attacking roots. "Why did this have to happen?!" She called out in frustration, angry that that she had let the man do what he did. She followed Kendal and Bear as swiftly as she could, using small flames to keep the roots and other Trees away from them and the path. Her ears were flattened to her head and her tail was flailing in the wind as she moved from side to side as she dodged some attacking vines.
Kendal clenched her small jaw in hot, burning anger. "You've trained here haven't you?" She called back, mirroring the Tailed Girl's irritation. "You should have known better then to bring your troubles here!" Her eyes were glistening with tears, both from rage and the heart-wrenching sadness of her only home being torn apart and burned alive before her very eyes. Her crimson eyes struggled to keep the salty water from cascading down her cheeks. Bear leaped over more roots with his four long legs. The trees were becoming increasingly irritated that their swipes at the prey were proving to be futile.
"Yes! I trained here! But I'm not the idiot who shot their gun when they were cornered!" She shouted back. "It's not my fault he was careless about his life and the life surrounding it!!" She following her swiftly, making sure that her footsteps were light and easy.
Kendal rolled her eyes, and tapped Bear's sides, encouraging him to go faster. "But you were planning on killing him anyway!" She shouted, no longer having control over her tears, they now created a small stream down her light blue cheeks. "You brought the trouble, and that idiot, here! What difference does who pulled the trigger make?" She screamed as a root swung at Bear from the side; he jumped with only an inch of space between them. The roots were gaining speed quickly, fully awake. A large root slashed at Cecily hungrily, wanting blood.
A kill means blood, a fight means blood, and blood means the trees would be put into a hungry frenzy. She had tried to keep the peace, and she had so many memories here. She would sit with travelers when they camped, helped them when she could, and had gained numerous sharpies of many different colors. She had met so many new and kind faces, and Kendal had learned a lot from them. She considered them her family. Everything was lost though as the roots closed in around them.
Her tears fell in large drops and it was becoming increasingly hard to see. "Even if you meant to take him alive, what makes you think he would go willingly? How arrogant can you be to believe that you alone could take him without a fight?" She was obviously upset with how events had turned out. Kendal was drowning in anger, frustration, and grief.

"I was planning on taking him in alive! I don't just kill my targets unless it is absolutely necessary!!!" She shouted back and then jumped up to avoid the incoming roots. She cursed under her breath as she got hit my one of them, then she burned the root, making it shrink back to a good distance away. She sped up, increasing the distance between herself and the attacking greenery. She looked over at Kendal again. "And I have more than just one power to take my targets in." She said aloud, thinking of her other powers. She had a small, yet good amount of telekinesis and some psychic abilities, due to her Were Heritage...but that was it. The fire powers came naturally to her when she was little, but she was born with the small amount of psychic sensitivity that she had at the time.
Kendal glared, hanging onto Bear with one hand and moving her other to clear away the tears, so she might be able to see. "I don't care if you have the 'ability.'" She spat angrily. "You didn't use it, so what difference does it make now? That's like giving a starving man food and believing he'll live if he doesn't eat it. Having and not using, hell," She snarled, tears forming again. "You might as well have not had them to begin with! Stop making excuses!"
"I was not able to get close enough to use my powers and have them be effective!" She shouted back. "I Swear to the Dragons, I would have used them if I could have!!!" Cecily felt her chest tighten, she hated seeing tears in other's eyes. She looked away as they ran, ashamed by herself.
Kendal grabbed Bear's fur with her other hand again to stay on better. She buried her face in his warmth and tried to get a hold of herself. Men don't cry. She reminded herself as she put forth the effort to essentially 'suck it up.' Bear leaped again and side stepped quickly away from the roots. In only a moment's time a clear meadow was in view, just beyond the trees. Bear let lose a very low, deep bark when he saw it. Kendal looked up, her tears drying slowly. She knew in her head that it wasn't completely the Tailed Girl's fault. She couldn't have known what the other idiot would do. Granted, it wasn't the best of ideas to bring him here in the first place, but nothing could be done about it now. Pouting, she clenched her jaw and raised her chin up. "You have to make it up to me!" Kendal shouted at the Tailed Girl, an idea to take advantage forming. Kendal still sounded a bit angry though. "Since my home was destroyed, you have to protect me from anything that comes after me. At least until I can find a new forest. Then I will leave you, and you won't have to deal with me ever again." She turned her head to glare back at the Tailed Girl. "That or I will turn you into a pixie, and leave you with these trees!"
She was a bit stunned by the boy's words for a moment as she ran towards the meadow that she saw in the distance after she looked up when she heard the dog bark. "I would preferably not be changed into a Pixie, thank you though." She said in a small tone. "I'm really sorry for causing trouble here." She said in an apologetic voice. Once they reached the Meadow, the trees had stopped following them and Cecily finally stopped to breath, running for too long was exhausting. She sighed and fell to the ground in a sitting position, then yelped and jumped back up as quickly as she had sat down. She frowned, Dammit, sat on my tail... She thought unhappily. She looked over at Kendal and Bear. "Sure, I can keep you safe from what ever is coming after you." She smiled at them, it was a gentle smile.
Kendal gave the Tailed Girl a toothy grin. Bear, exhausted from running in the 'obstacle course' flopped over on his side and breathed heavily. Kendal patted Bear's side lovingly. "Sorry, pal. I would carry you, since I am faster, but you're kind of huge." Bear simply looked at her with understanding eyes. Kendal laid down on her back next to the over sized canine. "So, Tailed Girl, since I have no choice but to follow you," She shot her a strange look. "and you have no choice but to take responsibility for your actions," She chuckled a bit, although the notion held no humor. "where are we headed? Well, you rather. Image I am not even here." She paused a moment before adding: "At least until something scary comes after me."
"Well, I'm headed back to my house in Xerria." She said. "It's really close to the edge of the town, so we won't have to go very far, but I'll need to stop by my Boss's place to get my 'paycheck.'" She smiled. "Sorry about the mess that I've caused, this normally doesn't happen when I try to get my targets. And I've always taken them in alive and uninjured." Sighing, Cecily sat back down on the ground, making sure that she did not sit on her tail this time, then she lay down.
Kendal just sort of stared back, obviously not amused. What was she supposed to say? That is was okay? That she forgave her? She decided to at least not lie, so she changed the subject. "So how long have you lived in Xerria?" She asked. Kendal had never left the forest. The only other place she had been in her life was the lab and she didn't like thinking about that. She had heard a lot about the world from travelers though, so she knew of the place the Tailed Girl had mentioned.
"Oh.....hmm....probably about four years." She said, looking over at Kendal. "I take it that you have lived here a while yourself?" She asked and then looked up at the sky. The wind was blowing over the meadow with a warm breeze. The ground in the meadow was glowing a light green color with the color of the spring flowers gradually glowing brighter. Cecily thought that this area was one of the prettiest. It was called Glowing Spring Meadow.
((Corny Name...I know ^^;))
((Corny Name...I know ^^;))
((No worries. :P ))
Kendal nodded. She didn't know how many years it had been. Maybe the lab had forgotten about her? She some how doubted it. Being too optimistic was simply setting yourself up for failure. She shook the thought from her mind. "When will we head off?" She asked the Tailed Girl softly. "We should probably let Bear rest though." Bear glanced over at the sound of his name, but was too tired to lift his head. "See?" Kendal said, gesturing toward the dog.

"Let's head out when Bear can move some." She smiled and looked over at the two. "My house isn't that far away from here. I purposely moved close to the Forest because it is safer for me personally." She looked up again, relaxing a bit in the grass.
Her eyes lost all humor. Safer for you maybe. She thought bitterly, but kept her mouth shut. She stood up and then promptly sat back down. She was going to go find a tree to climb and then realized how silly that was. She hugged her knees and then rested her chin on her arms. She felt odd. She hadn't left the forest in who knows how long. She felt naked and exposed. She knew her home would rather eat her than let her play though. Kendal heaved a heavy sigh.
Cecily glanced over at her. "You....are you okay?" She asked in a mellow and calm tone. She looked genuinely worried about Kendal. Sitting up, she maintained her eye's focus on Kendal and Bear. She looked at the dog, making sure that he was okay, and then looked over at Kendal again. She was worried that the boy had gotten hurt in the attack when the Trees did so.
Kendal pouted in response. "I'm not injured, if that's what you're asking." She scooted closer to Bear and laid down again, cuddling with him. Kendal realized that she might not be able to sleep in a tree for a few days at least. She groaned throwing her head back a bit frustrated. She shot an angry glare toward the Tailed Girl, but since Kendal was lying down she doubted the other girl could see it.
Cecily sighed slightly. "Sorry for causing trouble..." She said apologetically again. She looked up again, wanting to head home and get something to eat. She was starving and was up for pretty much anything except non edibles.
Bear sat for a few moments more before he slowly got up. Kendal stood with him and put her hand lightly on his shoulder. "We can go, if you want, Tailed Girl. Bear is alright now. I think I will just walk with him for a while though. Don't want to stress him out anymore." She decided not to ride him for the day, and probably let him take it easy the next as well. He was a companion and friend to her, not just a pet or mount. She scratched him behind the ears. "If you were still just a pup, I would carry you." She said with a soft smile. She then turned her attention back to the Tailed Girl. "You ready, Tailed Girl?"
Awaiting in a crouched position as she listened quietly for the sound of rushing footsteps on the ground of the forested area that is the Whispered Woods, Cecily Autumns grew impatient. Had she taken a wrong turn? What if the trap did not work? Those thoughts raced through her head as she stayed still.
After about ten minutes of waiting, she could finally hear the sound of rushed footsteps and heavy breathing. Her hands tightened around the handle of her Katana that was sheathed at her side. She took the middle part of the sheath, preparing herself for a swift and lethal attack.
The footsteps stopped in front of her hiding spot, she took the chance, while her Bounty was catching his breath, to move behind him and prepare for her move. But it was a futile attempt. The minute that She moved and reached her spot that she was aiming for, the man turned around and saw her. He became panicked and started running away once more. She cursed under her breath and then followed swiftly with light footing.
