Maybe you could feed them? That might protect your flower buds. I leave my coneflower standing long in to spring since finches eat the seeds. I also hang a niger thistle seed sock.

Looking out my kitchen window over the sink Friday morning I saw a bluebird and two female cardinals visiting on my deck railing. I love bluebirds and although several neighbors have bluebird houses we rarely see them so this was a treat.
