I've only read Pride and Prejudice so I can't really make an educated decision, but I appreciate all the other suggestions made. They will all be added to my to-read list for sure! I must admit though that I didn't really like the book Pride and Prejudice until I saw the movie - I got more enjoyment and appreciation for the story once I'd seen the movie.

Pride&Prejudice is my favourite book, I adore Mr Darcy!♥ I want to read Persuassion and Sense and Sensibility :)
I fell in love with Pride and Prejudice... but I also love Persuasion. No special reason... but they are the most romantic stories I've ever read.
Pride and Prejudice is my favorite by far of Jane Austin's literary works. I love the way she tells the stories and the evolution of the characters.
Pride and Prejudice is my sentimental favorite...I read it in high school...knew nothing about Jane Austen. I LOVED it and through it I was able to discover all of her other wonderful books. There is not one I haven't enjoyed reading over and over. The humor, the romance...it just doesn't get any better for me
As much as I love P&P, my favorite is Persuasion. For some reason this one just seems to me the most adult book she ever wrote. If Northanger Abbey was the most juvenile, Persuasion is the most mature. I'm not being insulting to Austen in my word choice, just describing the characters. Catherine in NA is such a child in the beginning and does some major growing up during the book. Elizabeth has some maturity issues as well, which she is able to overcome. Anne has done most of her growing up before the story even begins. Her challenge is to recapture and correct a mistake that she made in her youth. I love love love all of Austen's books and have read all multiple times. For some reason this one spoke to me in a very well-grounded way.Tonya wrote: "I probably would have never picked up an Jane Austen book on my own but her books were repeatedly mentioned in the Twilight books."
We're glad to have you here, then! At least some good has come out of those books! (Not being mean, I swear! I read them all, too and multiple times but Austen is so much better! lol)
Christine wrote: "Pride and Prejudice. It's absolutely flawless. The characters, the story, the dialog, and the author's ability to hold up a mirror so we can see ourselves."
Isn't it just like an old friend? :)
I love them all for different reasons- Northanger Abbey is probably my favourite, even though I haven't read it in ages
FYI if you're planning to watch Pride and Prejudice, you should watch the A&E version of the movie first. I usually don't reccomend movies before books, but this really helped!
Yes, definitely the A&E version. My dad apparently rented the Kiera Knightley version, though, this weekend. At least he's watching it :) next to work on him reading it...
I have to agree with everyone about Persuasion. I found it to be more true to life than any of Austen's other books, even though they were all amazing. I found Anne's regret and hope very nerve racking and kept hoping she'd get the chance most of us don't get in life.
Pride and Prejudice remains my favorite Jane Autsen book. All of Jane Austen's books are marvelous, so it's hard to choose a favorite!
Pride and Prejudice....as the characters are so real that sometimes it made me forget that I was reading fiction.
Mansfield Park. I love Fanny's innate sense of right and wrong and the effect of that on the people around her. Her passiveness annoys some people but changing that it would change the story.
If I had to choose only one favorite, it would be pride and prejudice. It is an evergreen classic.Jane Austen portrayed the main characters,Elizabeth and Darcy very well.
i love pride and prejudice sooooo much that it can't be expressed in words!Darcy is really a nice girl!
Persuasion by far, I believe it is a masterpiece. That story includes the most romantic love letter ever written, it always makes me cry. I believe since it was written during a latter period of her life, it has more maturity as well, the characters have more depth, and there is this sense on longing and sadness throughout the whole read. Just a masterpiece! I read it once a year... at least.
Pride and Prejudice.I started reading Persuasion, but it was boring and the main girl was a weak character, so I stopped.
But I've never read Northanger Abbey. Is it any good?
don't make me choose - I love Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility all equally. So many intelligent women, so much wit.
"Persuasion" for ever.
Elizabeth's strong character made her my favourite Austen's heroine but the story of Anne and Frederick is just too lovely. In my opinion they have the strongest bond of all Austen's couples. "What is meant to be will always find its way"

Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. Love them both. The characters are so very human in those books, especially the protagonists.
OMG...cannot get enough of Pride & Prejudice! The A&E production of the book was THE BEST! I have it on DVD and watch it at least 3 times a year. I have read the book numerous times as well. I also love Jane Eyre.

Persuasion. I think Anne is a wonderful character. She is real and a likeable person one would like to get to know. I love the idea of 2nd chances as well. Also the movie on PBS a few years ago with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones(sigh) was wonderful.
Laura wrote: "Yes, definitely the A&E version. My dad apparently rented the Kiera Knightley version, though, this weekend. At least he's watching it :) next to work on him reading it..."Absolutely!
Silvia wrote: ""Persuasion" for ever.Elizabeth's strong character made her my favourite Austen's heroine but the story of Anne and Frederick is just too lovely. In my opinion they have the strongest bond of all..."
Agreed. There is sweetness and true tenderness in this story.
Anita wrote: Emma. I love the way that Mr. Knightly hangs in there until Emma grows up."And then I love how he apologizes to her for scolding her. It's very sweet!
"I have blamed you, and lectured you, and you have borne it as no other woman in England would have borne it." - Mr. Knightly
My favourite is Pride and Prejudice because it has a great plot, but also because Lizzy&Darcy have this incredible connection that makes hard to put it off before finishing it. I also enjoyed the role of lizzy's mother, she is so funny and thinking about possible fortune for her daughters that it was difficult for me not to laugh at her. ;)
Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen book. Captain Wentworth's letter to Anne Elliott was beyond breathtaking. Periodically, I just re-read that letter and dream of receiving one like it. I love how Anne blossoms as time goes by in the book and she see her ,captain more and more. Her self esteem also rises to the challange of declaring her love for this man, and they are both rewarded in the end. All the years were not years spent in vain. They are more mature people when they come together again, and now Anne knows without a doubt that Captain Wentworth was always worth the pain she went through. Separation can achieve positive results and we see that in the relationship between Anne and Captain Wentworth.
For me it's a tie between Pride and Prejudice & Sense and Sensibility. I love P&P - it's a well written, well plotted, great novel. But S&S is just so emotional and heartfelt that it gets me every time :)
I commented previously but I forgot to mention Sanditon the version I read had the Authors listed on the cover as Jane Austen and Another Lady ( I can't remember what the other authors name was listed as inside the book)I really enjoyed it and had a hard time telling where Jane Austen stopped and the second author started.
So hard to choose just one - I tend to re-read Pride & Prejudice every year or two. But then I read Persuasion for book club a few years back and instantly fell in love. Either way, I think I may need to re-read them both soon!
Pride and Prejudice in fact i think it's her masterpiece . her ability to draw all these characters with high profession and develop them according to their complications and differences making magnificent plot which its end could not be predictable by all means.
I love them all, but I especially love the humor of Northanger Abbey. I listened to an audio book of this story and found myself laughing out loud. Loved it!
No matter how much I love Mr. Darcy I have to say my favorite is Persuasion. It feels like so many of the heroines in books are strong in a way that discredits women who are not as outgoing and ready to speak their mind as perhaps Elizabeth Bennett is. Anne Elliot depicts a young woman who is strong in who she is, but at the same time is content to keep to herself and finds love through her quiet reserve and purity.
My favourite is Emma, partly because once you discover the 'reveal', you can go back and read it a second time and you're reading a different story. Very, very clever.
