It is similar because neither child had any choice in the matter of the competition, or really any part of their lives. It was only near the end when they began to question and make their own choices that the outcome was changed. I think the only way it was different was that Celia was Hector's biological child, while Marco was an orphan, but really for all intents and purposes, they were BOTH orphans. Neither Hector or Alexander were ever true fathers to Celia or Marco, they were simply "masters," both of their study and of their fate.
I think that there was only slightly more of a relationship between Hector and Celia, but you are right, she was really an orphan too. She was dropped off and Marco was picked up...
