Sounds so nice to have flower perfume in the air.

MissJessie Our lawn was cut on Monday, first time. Daffodils are gone, dogwood is beautiful. Red bud on the way out, serviceberry beautiful.

A man is coming next week to look at redoing my large circular flower bed; I am anxious to get this going since I want to do perenniels in this bed.

Also, I plan to plant some kind of tall grass (like Pampas, perhaps) in front of the LPG tank (not a thing of beauty) for screening.

I had 9 truly ugly over the hill green shrubs cut off when the tree men were here; what an improvement. I am planning a smallish raised bed by the sidewalk just to play in more or less.

The fragrant tree sounds wonderful Petra. Right now, my yard's lily of the valley is just starting to bloom. Very small little flowers, not visible from far away, but great smell.

message 53: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I love lily of the valley. Never seen dogwood or serviceberry, I'd like to.

message 54: by Miriam (new)

Miriam I have lilacs in bloom in five spots in my yard, so my yard smells lovely too! Lavender, white, lavender with white edges, and two Korean dwarfs. One more that has not bloomed yet, or should I say ever. It was just a stick with roots a few years ago.

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments Cold and windy here today. Rain is predicted but I'll believe it when I see it. The dome is still in place.

Since our super warm spell ended the plants seemed to have gone into a holding pattern and are hunkered down waiting for more warm weather to start growing again. We did get frost night before last, but I don't think it hurt anything.

message 56: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Rained most of the day yesterday. In spite of three nights of below freezing, my grass has sprouted! So the rain is nice. More today and tomorrow.

message 57: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments My crab apples are blooming. The earliest I can ever remember. Very nice day today, 70s with light breeze. Supposed to storm tonight. We'll see.

message 58: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (ceodraiocht) | 83 comments We had 70's for a bit, then snow yesterday. Glad I hadn't cut the tops off the sprouted wintersown milk jugs yet. Same thing last week, really warm, then blam cold & snow.

Actually I think that kind of weather is good for the seedlings as it helps harden them off.

message 60: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Bad night for lots of people, but no tornados in Wellman. I haven't been outside to assess the damage from the winds though. They were fierce!

message 61: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) The winds here are extremely fierce, coming in gusts like the beginning of a hurricane, leaves are blowing everywhere and I am afraid the almost-ripe breadfruit are going to be blown off the trees. It has been raining hard intermittently since Friday which is nice as it will fill my cistern.

message 62: by MissJessie (last edited Apr 15, 2012 08:01AM) (new)

MissJessie I guess you are coming up on hurricane season soon enough Petra; doesn't it start "officially" June 1?

It's really windy here as well, but the projected high is 80 degrees and it's clear and sunny. Yesterday it was in the low 60's and over an inch of rain; very dark and uninspiring.

The allergies are at the worst right now re tree pollen, my particular pain in the rear. Pollen on all the surfaces; cars covered in yellow/green "dust". Maybe with the rain and the wind, it'll soon be over for another year. I am tired of allergy pills and drops. And red eyes. And "crying" all the time. Chapped eyelids are ridiculous.

Petra X (petra-x) MissJessie wrote: "I guess you are coming up on hurricane season soon enough Petra; doesn't it start "officially" June 1?..."

It does. But we rarely get anything before Aug. There hasn't been a bad hurricane here in years.

Sorry about your allergies. I tried loads of anti-histamines and found the best one was Flonase. After a couple of days use it stopped the eyes and nasal problems and didn't have the dry mouth/sleepiness side effects of the oral ones.

message 64: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Thanks for the tip, I'll try to find it and give it a try. The sleepiness is a bore.

message 65: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Miriam and Cheryl, I hope you are both OK and not involved in the tornados!!!! Let us know......

Saying a prayer for you both.

Me too.

message 67: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Just lots of wind and rain here last night, but no tornados. Slight chance tonight, but I suspect it will be just lots of wind. It appears that the storms are going further north, unfortunately, up near Cheryl.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Praying for all affected by those awful tornado's this weekend!

We've got temps in the 80s right now, going to 90 today. Bleah.

Hectic as of late. Mom being a pain post mini-stroke. Found out my father.in.law has cancer that's spreading in addition to his ceasing heart (so awful, I can't begin to tell you how devastated we are) and buying a new (used) pickup because hubbs (finally!) had it with the old piece of garbage.

message 69: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments In typical Minnesota fashion we had tornado warnings one night with humidity and rain, it froze hard the next night and I awoke to snow flurries the morning after that. I've heard a lot of people saying--well, it is what it is-- in the past few days. The crab apples are in bloom, but the wind is really cold and believe me we have had wind. We've had a couple of neighborhood events returning belongings to the proper yards after the wind strewed stuff around.

The perennials seem to be tolerating the freezing temps better than I expected, but I doubt if my tulips will bloom--I think they got hit pretty hard as they are in a low spot. I still haven't uncovered the beds that are in the less protected areas and think I might wait until next week. It's not going to be a lot of fun as the plants are up so high but I still don't trust this weather and I'm too busy to do it this week anyway.

so sorry to hear your family is having more health issues. Hope things settle down soon.

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments Finally, a free day to work outside. The only problem is I could see my breath outside this morning and everything is sopping wet. We had rain all day yesterday, much needed and so welcome so I'm not complaining. There's always tomorrow.

message 72: by Miriam (new)

Miriam I will be planting the fairy garden with the girls today after lunch. They are homeschooled, and get a long recess after lunch while mom works one on one with the older boy.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Cute Miriam! Can't wait to see pics!

Rain, we had rain Sat through today! At least 3 inches of it per the rain gauge out back. Of course we're 8"s below normal but this will help make a dent in our drought and provide temporary allergy relief. The caked on pollen has finally been washed away. The grass grew nearly a foot in some spots in the back yard LOL!

Now raw and in the 50s & 40s. Heat is back on!

message 74: by peg (new)

peg (mcicutti) | 419 comments I'm glad I'm not the only one who turned the heat back on,Jo. I live near Philadelphia and we also had chilly temperatures and rain for three days straight. The rain forced me out of the garden and I was able to get some things done indoors. LOL. Tomorrow is supposed to be clear. Hopefully,we will both be able to see some sunshine get back to gardening in the morning.

message 75: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments Perfect weather for working outside yesterday. Around 60 degrees and no wind!

message 76: by Miriam (new)

Miriam I will be planting a few leftovers from the fairy garden along my sidewalk this afternoon. Alyssum mostly, and violas- they came in six packs. One other, "Yellow Charm" Bidens.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) More rain tomorrow! I don't mind in the least, helps the drought, helps the gardens and helps with allergy relief :o)

message 78: by Marian (new)

Marian (gramma) | 24 comments started some seeds today. I have a table that I moved in front of a NW facing bedroom window. We bought a bag of All-Purpose garden soil and I added a handful of perlite & 3 handfulls of humus to each pot. The pots are houseplant pots - the extra large size. I let them sit for a day & a half before scattering the seed. We have portulaca, dwarf marigolds, & coleus. They are all mixed colors. They will be set out in plastic pots around the edge of things & between rocks that surround some of the rose & flower borders. This year my daughter will do most of the work. I will sit in the chaise like an oveerseer & say "No, not there. Over this way further!" and on and on...meanwhile let;s just hpe the seeds come up!

message 79: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I love portulaca, we call it jump-up-and-kiss-me here (no idea why), I think its the prettiest little flower.

message 80: by Marian (new)

Marian (gramma) | 24 comments Petra, where are you from? One of the things I love about portulaca is that it is so easy to start from seed!

message 81: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Wales.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Portaluca is wonderful!

Frost warning here on coast, freeze warning up north - ACK!

message 83: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments Possible snow tomorrow. Even if it comes I think the perennials will be fine. Have plumeria blooming.

message 84: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I have a new vine just blooming, thunbergia laurifolia, the purple trumpet vine, lovely scent. Is this the one you all can't get rid of?

message 85: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments Wild storm about 7PM last evening. Warning sirens went off twice. No big trees down this time, just lots of branches and petals from all the blooming flowering crabs. There were hundreds of them stuck to my big window this morning. Really poured rain and I was so happy to see it. Could tell a big difference on the perennials this AM--all looked much more perky and happy for getting a much needed drink.

message 86: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Wild weather last night also in Northern Cinti area. Five thunderstorms from 9 pm to around 2. The lightening was spectacular but it started a couple of house fires, so that's not so good.

Lots and lots of rain and decent winds. Quite a few roads were closed this morning due to high water or mudslides but all in all it could have been worse.

7 different funnel clouds were spotted; thank the Gods none touched down.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) More rain yesterday and today! More tomorrow! Woohoo!

message 88: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Lots of rain here too. The frogs are going mad outside, I think they are having a rain-orgy.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) The sad thing is that we're still 6-10 inches below normal rainfall for this time of year throughout the area! I've so been enjoying the foggy, rainy days though. Forgotten how much I love the sound of rain falling and thunder in the distance.

message 90: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments We got about an additional 4/10 inch rain night before last. Every little bit helps! Heard the frogs for the first time last night as I was driving home from Garden Club. We usually don't hear them in town, so that was a treat as it was the music I went to sleep by throughout my childhood on the farm.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) Sunday was our only fully sunny day once the clouds and fog cleared by noon in almost a week? Today was mostly cloudy, showers off and on this evening, more rain tomorrow. I'm loving it! Except for the migraines. The constantly changing weather has been irritating them, I had 4 in a week's time as of yesterday's!

message 92: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments Rained twice today--all morning and then again around 4P. Weather mavins are claiming we will next have two days in a row without rain--hmmmmmm

message 93: by peg (new)

peg (mcicutti) | 419 comments It rained off and on all day again today, we even had a couple thunder storms. It is supposed to rain here until Friday. Saturday is supposed to be sunny. I'm really hoping for good weather Saturday and Sunday because this is my weekend off from work. The kids could really use some sunshine too. They need to go outside and play.

message 94: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Today and yesterday there was only the normal amount of rain, two minute passing showers, but Fri, Sat and Sun, some of the roads were impassible with sheets of water coursing down them. My cistern is full! Nice waterfalls along the cliff sides though. I like the rain, I like the sunshine, so I don't mind whatever the weather is, except for hurricanes. I hate them.

message 95: by Miriam (new)

Miriam When I left for the wedding in Texas, my grass already was due to be cut, but was way too wet from all the rain. It did not rain yesterday or today here, so this morning I cut it, and cut it, and cut it. One negative about using a reel mower (no engine) is that it has a hard time when the grass gets too long. Motorized mowers somehow suck the grass upright by the motion of the blades, so they do okay with slightly too long grass. I went over and over everything, and it still looks like a toddler that got hold of the scissors and cut their own hair! I will have to keep mowing it until I get it even again!

message 96: by Maria (new)

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) Here in Texas we have some really nice weather going. It was quite hot the last two or three weeks of april, but we got a nice cool front with RAIN this week. WOOT!

Of course for here, the lettuce is about done, the snap peas might have another week...and I'm seeing those darn moths that mean squash vine borers are right behind. I'm using cinnamon on the plants to try and confuse the moths. If nothing else the garden smells good...

message 97: by Cheryl S. (new)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments This is the day Minnesotans dream about all winter---around 70 degrees, light wind and wall to wall sun. No humidity, no bugs--it was fantastic! Back to reality--rain is predicted for tomorrow.

message 98: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Today was the kind of day anyone would dream of here in SW Ohio--high 60's, little puffy clouds if any, nice breeze, sweet smells. Wonderful day.

Spoiled by having a mammorgram......

message 99: by peg (last edited May 11, 2012 06:31AM) (new)

peg (mcicutti) | 419 comments Ahhh.... we had a sunny day yesterday and everything grew in leaps and bounds. What a difference a day makes! My flowers are standing up like soldiers.

I'm off to buy two lounge chairs for my patio so that I can sit and enjoy the view.

I hope all went well with your mammogram Jessie.

message 100: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Lovely here, too. So glad to be home where everything is lush. So much is in bloom- roses, widow's tears (spiderwort), iris, peony, catmint, coral belles, etc. etc. etc.
