Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Susan's Answers to CaroB's questions for chapters 21-31

27. That kiss in the carriage! Again. Was the chemistry build-up after the previous antagonism between Letty and Geoff, realistic to you? What do you think of both of their reactions immediately after the kiss?
yes, I think it was realistic. I hated that Letty thought he was regretting it.

28. Talk about curious! So Vaugh IS a double agent and the marquise is playing the role of his cousin? Why let her be seen at all, even in a man's disguise... why nto just keep her tucked away in the country somewhere?
Let me truthfully say, when I typed that about Vaughn being a double agent, I really had NO clue that he truly was! And when I read that I nearly fell out of my chair I was so surprised...then I did a little happy dance/cheer that I was right LOL As for why he was letting the Marquise be seen, I'm not sure. Unless it was his way of letting her think she was still in charge.

29. What's you theory on the "petals with no stem"? (snigger)Brilliant spy plan or a chance for further plot-props?
I think it's a brilliant spy plan. Of course, someone has to be the mastermind behind the petals, so who is it?

30. Is anyone else starting to think Eloise is acting terribly immature for a post-grad historian? Why did she let Colin assume she and Jay were together?
YES!! She's in her what, fifth year as a grad student? She should be more mature. I think she let Colin think they were together so it would prompt him into action if he really did like her

31. I found Geoff's offer for Letty to come home with him surprising, and a bit presumptuous (if you can say that with a married couple), but then he redeemed himself in the carriage ride with the cuddle :-) What was your take on it and the ensuing combination of humour and sweetness of the household decorations and the lemon for the freckles, and her having read his poetry etc. Too corny? Overdone? Perfect?
I did think Geoff was presuming a lot by that offer. I mean, really, he had barely spoken to her previous. the household decorations were HILARIOUS!! I loved that she teased him about his poetry, but it was kind of weird, he wrote it to her sister. And when Letty finally admitted having secretly wanting Geoff, I found that a smidgen out of character. I just didn't see her wanting her sister's beau.

32. I had a giggle at Geoff arming Letty with all the weapons available to a lady that he could think of. Did you think she'd have to use any?
I thought that it was cute! I never thought she'd have to use it

33. Who do you think killed the Marquise? Is it someone we've already met in this book or do you think it will end up being someone who gets introduced in the next book?
Now there's a good question. I haven't got the foggiest who killed her. Could it be the mastermind behind the Black Tulip? Or is it Vaughn, getting tired of the games?

34. Letty takes note of how tired and gaunt Vaughn is looking. For someone who is supposedly indifferent to his role as a double agent, what do you think he's having trouble with?
yes. I also think he cared for Theresa more than he let on

35. Ok, So I must admit, I knew Letty would make it in time to save Geoff, and Miss Gwen was a crack up, but I did NOT see Jasper coming. Did you?
Nope, didn't expect Jasper to show up. I was laughing so hard at Miss Gwen! My kids had to tell me to calm down LOL

36. Yaay for the scissors!! Do you think Jasper got off too lightly? Did you like the way Geoff used his own insecurities to convince Letty of his feelings?
I think Jasper got off too easily. I was all swoony over the way he convinced Letty of his feelings :)

37. Eloise has a date with Colin!! So excited!!
I was excited for her too!!

I am so glad you said that!! I thought I had understood her to be his wife(in the 2nd book), but then I wasn't sure if I read it correctly and no real mention of it was said again.

Lina | 5563 comments She was his wife????? I didn't realise, I thought it had been some opera singer?? Man, there's so much detail in these books that I seem to be missing!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I believe so, CaroB. I could be wrong, but I think it was discussed in the last book. Wasn't the Marquise Vaughn's wife, Susan?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments @ Susan

#27 – It was realistic.

#28 – Hey, in the last book we were speculating that, weren’t we? I was a shocked as you were, though.

#29 – It is! I haven’t a clue who is the mastermind.

#30 – Yeah, that and she didn’t want him to think she was pathetically waiting for him to call…which she was.

#31 – Yes, forgot about the decorations, LOL! And the poetry and her secretly wanting him (where there was no clue to those feelings) were a bit of an ‘ick factor’.

#34 – That or what ‘might have been.’

#35 – Oh, yes! Miss Gwen is a hoot. And she sounds even funnier on the audiobook.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Yes, Lisa Kay, I really think the Marquise is Lord Vaughn's wife. At least, I understood that from my reading.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments Sooo, I was brave (and nosey) and emailed the author, Lauren Willig to ask about Lord Vaughn and the Marquise LOL She said they were not married, but were lovers during the Terror in France. Both of them weren't very fond of marriage, the Marquise due to her first marriage and Lord Vaughn, well she didn't say, but did say we'd find out in the next book :D

Lina | 5563 comments Love it Susan! I'm always over-awed by authors, think it's awesome that she responded :-) My admiration for her grows hearing that.

I'm not too sure if I'll be able to join you ladies for the next buddy read in May. We've just sold our propery ( http://www.realestate.com.au/property... )on the weekend and now will be busy finding a new place and moving out before June.

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments I may have squealed just a little bit when I saw she responded LOL

Congrats on the house sale! And OMG is that what you're leaving?? It's BEAUTIFUL!! Good luck on the new house hunting :)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments So exciting, Susan! Neat that she responded - and took the time to do so. She seems a busy lady. Did you tell her all about us? LOL!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Neat, too, CaroB, about the sell! Lovely house. Love your cute little owl avatar too. Love owls. I'm sure his is saying "Who?" but should you be saying "Where?" Hope you find a great house.

Did that sound too self-centered? LOL!

Thanks Lisa Kay, loving owls at the moment.

And no, I didn't think you did sound self-centered :-)

Susan (susayq ~) (susayq) | 6062 comments And yes, I did tell her about ya'll :D Here's her response to me...

Hi, Susan,

Lord Vaughn and the Marquise were lovers in France during the Terror, but they never married-- she wasn't the marrying kind (she was not at all fond of her first brush with matrimony). Neither was Vaughn, but for rather different reasons....

Well, you'll find out Vaughn's reasons for not marrying in "Crimson Rose". It would be a spoiler if I told you.

Have fun! And say hi to the Romance Lovers for me!

All best,
Lauren
