I will have to look. Did you add anything new since the last time we had this discussion?

Lauren Smith Only review books, I think. Possibly one or two others.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I will check the list again. Just give me some time.

Lauren Smith No problem. I'll take a look at my bookshelves as well (the real ones).

Lauren Smith Oh, and if you have a preference for a certain type of book or want something to fit with a challenge you can just tell me what it is and I'll try and find something to fit.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
The only challenge where I could use some help is in the A-Z location challenge where I need a book with an X-location, but for the other challenges I am either finished or have the books on my to read pile. except for the A-Z challenges but we still have some time for those.

Lauren Smith X is excluded for the Location challenge :) Check the first post.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I know, but you know I am an overachiever and if we have to read the X in the other A-Z challenges I want to read it also for the locations one.
I still can't understand why we can exclude the X but not the Q.
So I ams till looking for abook but I have plenty of time left to find one.

I am so so sorry, Lauren, but I totally forgot that I was supposed to take a lok at your books to choose one for our new buddy read. I must say I still haven't looked but that is because I have a brilliant idea. At least I think it is brilliant.
First is that we had talked about reading Kraken and I have that book. I know you have to get a copy so that is a book that can wait.
Second and the really brilliant part is that I checked and we are thinking about reading the same books in the deserted island challenge. We are both thinking about reading Before I fall, Midnight Circus, Duma Key and Cry to Heaven. Why not use those books for our reading together. That way we have the next 4 books picked out and all we have to do in my case is order the books and together pick the order in which to read them.
Let me know what you think!
P.s. if you want to read something else I really need a book published in 1980 that I haven't read yet.

Lauren Smith No problem, I was actually thinking that we should try and co-ordinate this with the deserted island, because I probably can't do more than one leisure read a month anyway.

Kraken - My mom hasn't sent that yet, so I was thinking I'll just pick it up when I go down in July. We can read it any time after that.

Midnight Circus - do you mean The Night Circus? If yes, we can do that one. I'm happy with Cry to Heaven and Before I Fall as well. Not sure about Duma Key though - I might go for Uglies by Scott Westerfield instead. Also, I see you'll be reading The Club Dumas from my books - I've been meaning to re-read that for a while, and I bought a copy not too long ago, so we can do a buddy read of that too, if you like.

1980 - I looked through my books. A lot of publishing dates have disappeared (thanks to that stupid data changeover a while back) but I found these:
Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole The Snow Queen (The Snow Queen Cycle, #1) by Joan D. Vinge

I've read Midnight's Children, but I want to re-read it. I haven't read the other two, but I have copies of both. I remember we discussed the Snow Queen before though, and you said buying a copy would be quite pricey.

Kraken can wait. I have it and it is on my to read pile where it can stay till we have time.

Yes that is the one I meant. I am confusing a Dutch book that came up in a discussion with the english one and made a totally new title, maybe a book I should write. Not that I have illusions that I can write a book but you never know.

Yeah I will probably read Duma Key. I am trying to save on buying books and Uglies is the first part of a series and then I want to get the whole series so Duma Key is cheaper for me. Have to be economical in expensive times. That is also the reason why I am going to read the Club Dumas. You sent me an ebook of that once in an html file and I can read that on my computer. Not my favorite way of reading but it will do.

I hate that data changeover. I don't understand why it had to happen. I lost so many data that I put in myself. I know there was something to do with no longer being able to use data supplied by Amazon but they deleted Dutch books that I added myself with data of my own. I lost several books and I can't seem to figure out which ones and it is annoying the hell out of me.

The 1980 books. Yeah the Snow Queen will be quite expensive and I have read the Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie and I am not looking forward to reading another book by him. A Confederence of Dunces is a book I never even heard of so I have to look into that one. However I don't think we need it anytime soon since we have a lot of books lined up.
We have:
1) Kraken
2) The Night Circus
3) Cry to Heaven
4) Before I Fall
5) the Club Dumas
and as a maybe 6) Duma Key unless you are going to read Uglies.
So it seems we have got the rest of the year covered since we won't be reading on in May since you are going to be in Paris. And depending on what you are going to read from my nominations I might reread it with you.
All I have to do is get the books and all we have to do is pick the first one to read.

Lauren Smith I'm going to re-read Perfume from your books Barbara, since I need it for the Choose Wisely challenge. Plus it's set in France and I always meant to re-read it. I'll probably try and read it next week, before I leave, if you want to read it with me :)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Very tempting, but I am going to say no for two reasons. The first being that I have to many books I want to read right now to reread a book even if it is one of the best books ever written. Second is you are going to read it in English. Not that that is wrong but my copy is in German and I always read it in German. My experience is that books that have been translated have slight differences especially in the names of characters which make is hard to talk about it. Famous example is Harry Potter. I could not talk about it with my nieces and nephews because they read it in Dutch and I in English and when they were talking about characters I didn't know who they were talking about because the names got translated. Sometimes it was easy to figure out who it was but sometimes it took us quite some time. I don't expect it to be much of a problem with Perfume but it would spoil some of my fun in the book if it did happen.

Are you all set for your trip? You will be leaving in a week's time right?
I am a bit sad because if I had had a job I would have been on a trip right now. The Star Trek convention I always go to will start today and be this weekend. Unfortunately I didn't have the funds to attend this year. It does feel strange to know that I have attended three years in a row and this year I won't be there but maybe next year.

Lauren Smith That's cool. I'd actually be interested to know the differences between the English and the German though. I don't think different character names would be an issue though. Is the main character at least named Jean-Baptiste Grenouille?

Not quite set for my trip yet, but next week I'll start packing. In the meantime I've been looking for some restaurants to go to. From the look of things we'll most just have lunch if we eat out, because it's so much cheaper.

Sucks about the Star Trek convention :( Hopefully you'll be able to go next year! And hopefully I can fly to the Netherlands soon as well.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
It might be interesting to know the differences but then we should take more time for it. You will be very busy next week and it might be the best time to spend much time discussing. Also like I said I have several books I want to read right now to get some challenges out of the way. I still have one book to go to finish the Terry Pratchett challenge and then I will have finished the group challenge and the individual challenge (all 40 tasks). I have 4 books to go for A life full of books. Also I want to get my task out of the way for the Choose Wisely challenge since it has been some time now since I got it and I want another task. And I really want to read the book Claudia got me for my birthday but I can't read it before I finish the challenges (my own rules). So another time might be better to do a comparision study. Yes he is called Jean-Baptiste Grenouille but then Harry Potter is still Harry Potter in Dutch, but Hermione Granger becomes Hermeline Griffel and Ron Weasley becomes Ron Wemel.

Yeah France can be expensive because of all the fine dining, but just ask some locals where you can eat good food that is cheap. Don't ask your hotel staff because they will direct you to the tourist restaurants but if you ask some locals and go to some backstreets you should find great cheap places.

Yeah ah well, you can't have everything you dream of because then there would be nothing to dream about. But I have been thinking about it all week. Like on Wednesday: "today I would have been packing my suitcase and my mum would come because she had to drive me to the airport and take care of my cats" and on Thursday "today I would have been flying to the US and checking in and meeting some old friends I met on previous conventions" and today I am looking at the clock to see what time it is and when the fun would be starting (in about 5 hours). But well it is what it is and maybe next year everything is different.
I would love to welcome you to the Netherlands and like I said you have a place to stay with me and my cats if you want it. But wait till we have some better weather because it is dreadfull at the moment. I hope it is better in France.

Lauren Smith Yeah, I guess I'll be busy next week. And it's also nice to occasionally read a book without having to take notes all the time!

We'll be staying in a flat rather than a hotel, so maybe the owner ca give us some recs. I've been chatting to a few people who've given us some ideas as well.

I was thinking like that during Christmas time last year. I'm not religious of course, but I still like to celebrate it as a family holiday/tradition and I like the feel of the holiday season. I kept thinking about how I would have been going to the beach, going shopping, eating out, planning a nice Christmas lunch and going out for the ingredients. Instead I was stuck in Addis.

I've actually been wondering if I should try and come in summer/spring or during winter. I've never seen snow, and I thought it would be fun to see a European country in the snow. On the other hand I get cold easily and I love the sun, so it's a tough call. Either way I'd love to come stay with you and the cats!

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
A flat that is a good thing. The owners will be able to give you some tips about restaurants.

I love the feel of the holiday season. Although I always think it weird to think about half the world celbrating it in summer heat and with absolutely no chance of snow :) I am not christian myself but I do know what you mean about celebrating it as a family tradition. I can really relate to the feeling of being stuck in Addis. I am stuck in my own home today while the Star Trek fun is only 3 hours away and if I was going to attend I would be having breakfast or just finishing breakfast and meeting up with people I know. And not that it is terrible that I am not there but here, but it would have been nice if it was the other way around. But the good thing is now I can attend my best friends birthday tomorrow which I would have missed if I had attended the convention.

Well I can't guarantee you snow in winter. We have been lucky that the last three winters have had snow, but it wasn't throught the whole winters and we have also had a period of something like 10 years were there wasn't even a single snowflake. I can garantee that when it does snow it will be f*****g freezing cold. So if you get cold easily I would say pack warm clothes. Also my winter is your summer so you would miss out on some of your summer heat. And if we don't get snow you can count on a lot of rain.
But then again I can't guarantee you sun in summer either. Last year we didn't really have a summer at all. We had a splendidly warm nice week early in the year and that was it. But other summers there are troubles because it is too warm and supermarkets run out of soda drinks and icecream.
That is just the whimsical nature of a sea climate :)
But before you decide on when you want to come maybe it is an idea to decide what you would like to see (if you want to see anything at all :P) Some attractions are closed in the winter (because of the weather and maintenance) and don't open untill April. If you want to see those attractions then it is best to come in summer if you don't mind missing out on them you can come whenever you want :)
And make that cat, my mistake. Bastet is very afraid of strangers and doesn't let herself be seen by many people. Let alone touch or play with. Although it has been better since I ended that friendship earlier this year. Cicero however will want to play with you so she will make up for Bastet.

Not sure if you are coming online again tonight but just wanted to wish you good travels! I hope your flight is ok and your stay in France is amazing! Take lots of photos and show them to us so we can see what you saw. Have fun!

Lauren Smith Thank you! There will definitely be loads of photos (Yaseen always takes way too many).

I think you are back or almost and so we can pick our next buddy read.We decided on reading these books:
1) Kraken
2) The Night Circus
3) Cry to Heaven
4) Before I Fall
5) the Club Dumas
and as a maybe 6) Duma Key unless you are going to read Uglies.

I ordered all the books and have them all in my possesion except the Night Circus which is still making its way to me but can reach me any time now.
So let me know which you want to start with.

Also I read the second book in the Shardlake series. This one was not taking place in a monastery and I didn't have the feeling I had read the story before but better. It made the reading more enjoyable and I even quite liked the book. Now I can't wait to read the third book in the series.

Lauren Smith Flying back tonight :)
I might have to put this on hold so I can read The Diamond Age to finish the Mishmash challenge. It's a non-negotiable book (longest of the first 5 on my to-read list) and I really don't want to fail that challenge with just one book to go.

For the buddy read, I'm thinking 2, 4 or 5, but I will look over my other challenges when I have more time and decide on one.

Glad you liked the second Shardlake book! It makes reading the first one a bit more worthwhile.

I know. When you have only one book to go you really want to finish :) I have been very busy trying to finish the Terry Pratchett challenge, which I did two days ago and with finishing I mean all 40 tasks. And also I am busy with the life full of books challenge. I still have one book to go. I am first reading a mystery for the Choose wisely challenge and then i will be reading the last book for the life full of books challenge. Since that is one of a trilogy I will be reading all three books.

I am in no hurry (see above, still have 4 books to go), it's just that our buddy reads coincide with the deserted island challenge and I feel a bit guilty that I haven't read anything for that challenge yet.

Well I always find reading a book worthwhile. You always learn something and if you didn't read it you would never know if you liked it or not and would always wonder. I am glad I liked it because I have all 5 books and I am a bit neurotic about finishing series and books even if I don't like them. Liking part two makes the prospect of reading this series a bit less daunting :)

Enjoy your last day in Paris and have a good flight back home!

Night Circus, Night Circus!

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
We will be reading the book, might not be the first we read, but as you see it is on the list so no spells necessary :)

Lauren Smith Barbara, you can add Contact to the list of possibilities. I wasn't all that keen on it, but now I need a book published in the year of my birth for MishMash and I can use Contact.

Still haven't decided on a book yet, but I think I'd like to go for an easy read - I've got a lot to catch up on after my holiday :)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok, wow we have a lot of books on our list. I like it!

I don't know which of them would be the easiest. I'll do some research and find out.

Lauren Smith Well, YA usually isn't too hard to read, so maybe Before I Fall. And popular fiction is generally easy too, so The Night Circus could work as well.

message 78: by Barbara (last edited May 28, 2012 01:40AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok so we'll start with Before I Fall and then read The Night Circus, because I haven't yet received the last one.

Just tell me when you are ready and I will read with you :)

Lauren Smith Ok, cool :) I've started The Diamond Age, but it's quite long and complex, so it might take me a while. However, I have to finish it before 20 June, so at least I can tell you that we can start before then :)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok then. I can most often start on any day without notice, so take your time, read your book and right the review and we'll start when you're done :)

Lauren Smith Oh, luckily I'm not going to review this one :)
