Nakul Chawla The book is a classic, to capture such emotions, the characters that develop throughout the book is very difficult.
I feel the movie is one of the finest examples of book-to-movie translations.

Loved both of them.

Mike Carey I know that it's very difficult for a movie to do a great novel justice but I think that this movie comes as close as any other. Given the restrictions that a movie has I think the movie absolutely caught the mood and atmosphere of the book.

Caitlin Powell There are very few movie adaptations that rival the original book, and To Kill a Mocking bird with Gregory Peck made Harper Lee's Novel into the wonderful story it was meant to be. I can honestly say that both the movie and book were delightfully classic!

Elena I thought the movies portrayal of the book was good. I didn't like how they cut out some parts but Atticus played by Gregory Peck was absolutely how I pictured him. I really like the emotion after Atticus lost the case too. But I felt like Mrs. Dubose was key to the plot.

Francisco Luiz Garcia Book, no doubt

Bodhi I'm going to have to vote for the movie. I saw the movie as part of a group event and decided to check out the book. The acting was great in the movie. The movie was more cohesive; it had more vision. The book was more disjointed and choppy.

Stephen Cher wrote: "...Out of curiosity, what films do live up to the great books you've read? "

I love the movie an re-watch it a lot but the book is a greater experience. It just takes a little more time.

If you'd like a lot of opinions about movies that are better than their books you might check this list.

It has some where the movies were truly better but many where public opinion and I disagree. You'll have to judge for yourself.

Shabana I read the book first, and the impression it made on me will never compare to any other rendering of it. The storyline was made whole by the depth of its characters and I think that often when a book is translated into a movie, you lose some of that depth. In the case of To Kill a Mockingbird, which had such great depth to begin with, losing a little bit of that depth in the process of translating it into a movie still left it with enough sapience to make it worthy of watching.

Shelley I agree with Mike. I believe Gregory Peck loved the project so much that he gave up some money in order to retain creative control. So when the "suits" wanted the movie cut and sliced, he was able to say no.

God bless Horton Foote for writing a thing of beauty.

Eileen I agree with Mike and you Shelly. :0)

Jo Ann I loved both the movie with Gregory Peck, as Atticus and the book: To Kill A Mockingbird.

I just finished reading "The Mockingbird Next Door: . . . " by Marja Mills; a wonderful explanation of Harper Lee's daily life since the publication of her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird so many years ago.

Jovi I thought the film was as good as the book! I have yet to see another movie come close to the book, it was well played.

Grace Rogan Book definitely

Elaine McHale To Kill a Mockingbird is possibly one of the most amazing books I've ever read.It has strong messages and true indications of the horrific prospects of prejudice and racism. The movie is also incredible and this is evident from the fact that it is still widely popular even after all these years.
The book, however,is more detailed and has that extra edge that the movie does not.

Roots Definitely the book, always. The movie cut out ALOT of the important scenes that just needed to be in there.

Morgan i think that your view on either the book or the movie can change durrastically if you have only seen one or another. if i had only seen the movie, i would have thought it was quite good for a movie of that time. but the book provides many more details and really opens up the characters for us to understand. therefore the movie seemed to lack many details we had expected. i think that the movie is quite good without the book, but if you have read the book, you definatley wont like the movie at all.

Winifred Maine Although the book (as with most books) is better than the movie, I still think the movie did a pretty good job in giving it justice. Having said that, read To Kill a Mockingbird before you watch it’s movie. I also believe that the movie explains the ending better than the book. It was after I watched the movie that I finally understood the service Boo Radley did to the family.
