Kaitlyn Davis I loved Sydney! I thought it was cool to have an uber smart heroine and she was totally different than Rose but still strong, which I think it great for a spin-off series. But I had so much trouble wrapping my head around her weight issues!

When she goes to get her school uniform and they make her get a size two and not a size zero, she freaks out. And then there are all these mentions of dieting and how she thinks she needs to lose weight, and she's so surprised when Adrian says she's cute.

I don't know, it was just odd to me! The average size for a girl is like a 6/8, I don't know why someone who is a size 0/2 (and who is so smart!) would say she needed to diet and lose ten pounds.

Did anyone else notice this? I got an arc copy, so maybe that was changed by the time it was published, but that was one thing I just didn't get about her character!

S.L.J. She has serious self-esteem issues. Which I think is understandable considerining she works around Moroi all the time who have supernatural beauty and that her own father tells her that she isn't good enough. She's really not used to getting compliments but that might change now that the Alchemists see her as a bit of a hero.

I actually feel sorry for her and I'm hoping it's an issue she'll get past as the series continues. In the verson I read, Adrian and a few others keep telling her that she needs to gain weight.

I'm hoping she gets a bit more curvy and is happy with her looks. :)

Hannah Yer the weight issues I think came from being around the moroi all the time. She is very self conscious and doesn't seem overly comfortable in her own skin which makes me think the author has an underlying message with these books?

♥ Alexia -Team Malec ♥ there is nothing wrong with her.

Shruti I love her!! Yeah I just hope she gets past this!

I totally agree!

Amanda (Gale's Chosen One) Potter That was annoying. But she obviously has self esteem issues which a lot of girls do, no matter how slim they are. So I understand it.
Haha atleast we know she eats pizza.
I still love her :) I actually like her better than Rose.

Hannah Ya I think Sydney might become anerexic or have some sort of health problem in future books. But considering that she's around Moroi who are freakishly skinny can do some damage to a girls self esteem. Neverless I love her character and I find her comments about being "fat" very amusing when she is clearly skinny.

I read an ARC too, but Richelle Mead said that Sydney's a size 4 in the finished copy. Here's a post she wrote about Sydney's body image: http://blue-succubus.livejournal.com/...

Mikaela I didn't really think it was weird, she has to be around Moroi, so she's always comparing herself to them.

Ayn I think Sydney is just very thin for a human, like sort of model type of thin. And when Adrian says that she is too thin, I think he is comparing her to other humans or Rose since Rose is curvy.

Yeh he's probably comparing her to Rose after all he was in love with her. Besides, thinking yourself as being fat is in nearly every girl's nature.

Fredrika Yeah, I agree, it was kind of weird...and different. But still, pretty normal and realistic.

Jessica I don't think it was weird. Even skinny girls have body image problems, and being around moroi would obviously make it worse. In addition to them being tall and skinny, she also makes reference to their perfect skin, which she is also jealous of. Seemed pretty realistic to me.

Darlene Not weird at all. I thought it was pretty normal for a teenage girl who spends all her time working with ridiculously gorgeous and thin people. Her dad also pressured her about that. I think what Mead may be trying to do is create someone more relatable compared to her usual heroines, and judging from others' reviews a lot of people do relate to Sydney.

She was a 4 but was upset she was not a 2. But yeah she does just have self esteem issues

♔ InfiniteRoyalty ♔ I think the self-esteem issues fit in with the whole down-grading Alchemist business...plus the pressure of her father its a pretty common sort of teenage girl problem...
I think it also puts a spin on how the story is different to Rose's journey..Rose never had any problems with herself...all she really had to conquer was her impulsiveness, everyone's thoughts on her generally wild actions, and how to solve the Dimitri problem...
Sydney, while mentally capable of anything never really got the high school experience of learning to accept herself while being under scrutiny of others...so far, she's been under scrutiny by the Alchemists and her father...screwing up is not an option for her, so she goes to great lengths to get their approval...

Krissie I didn't think her weight issues were bizarre because I think the author purposely included them to have Sydney be more relatable. Her father is kind of a *insert bad word here* and being around unearthly Moroi all the time must bite into her self-esteem. No pun intended.

Scarlet I didn't find anything bizarre about it. Sydney has some insecurities just like everyone else. Given the type of people she has to be around all the time (Moroi and her very critical father) it's not bizarre that she would develop some self-esteem issues about her weight. That just makes her more relatable and likeable in my eyes. I don't like protagonists who are written to be perfect in every way.

bubblegumpopper I actually agree with you. I understand that she supposedly compares herself to the Moroi and that's supposed to be the source for the self-esteem issue, however she also talks in depth about how LITTLE contact with the Moroi the Alchemists generally have. Her self-esteem problem pre-dated her intimate relationship with these Moroi, so the two claims seem to contradict each other. Her constant self-doubt really made me like her a lot less. I'm glad that she's cut back on that character flaw in the recent book.

Scarlet Her current job requires her to babysit a Moroi (Jill). You're right that her weight issue is something she developed before she moved to Palm Springs with Jill, but being around a girl who is exceptionally tall, skinny, and beautiful only fuels her already established distorted view of her weight. I see it as a flaw that makes Sydney more relatable.

Goshgirl Its all stemmed from her self esteem issues. working around the uber-slim moroi all the time isn't good for her. Plus a certain comment made by her father.
" If those monsters can do it, why cant you?" It was something like that. I can't remember which book it was in or what page it was, but it was definitely in relation to her weight. Her main motivation for trying to be so skinny was for acceptence for her father. At least she gets better about it as the series goes on.

Thank goodness Adrian helped Sydney snap out of it. I was worried she was on the verge of anorexia there.

I totally agree. It was after Adrian sort of lectured her a little about her weight in a sweet way that made me love him more that she started trying to gain a bit of weight.

Olivia Tate I think what the author was trying to get across was how hard her father was on her. If you remember her father was yelling at her that if "those monsters" could be that skinny so could she.
